Hi Lawrenceville FCC!
My name is Denise Shearer. I am very excited to join the Lawrenceville FCC Team as the new
Community Nurse.
A bit about me….I am a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh and Shadyside Hospital School of Nursing.
I have: worked with children and teachers in early childhood education; substituted as a nurse in my local school district;
worked with adult transplant patients; worked with children and young adults who have either Type 1 diabetes or Type 2
diabetes; and spent time as a stay-at-home mom.
Through my family, I have learned about and sought guidance for: learning disabilities, behavioral issues, physical abnor-
malities, a chronic disease and the importance of nutrition and activity. I have also learned that volunteering can be en-
lightening, field trips are fun and watching children grow is most rewarding.
My goal is to provide you with helpful information as you navigate through the growth and development of your family. If I
cannot answer your questions, I will try to find someone who can. If you have a particular health interest or request for a
class, please let me know. The more we learn and work together as a team, the healthier we will all be.
Thank you Sheila Beasley for at-
tending our January Parent Council
Meeting. Our parent leaders were
excited to see you and our newest
members got to learn more about
parent governance!
KR children and their parents participated in a Family Team Building program.
We had fun engaging in a group juggling activity, making tall towers out of spa-
ghetti and marshmallows, life size self portraits and collages from magazines of
a “few of our favorite things”.
Do you have problems with getting your child to eat anything except chicken nug-gets? Does your child refuse to try anything new? If so you, might be experiencing “picky eating”. Here are some tips and tricks on how to deal with a “picky eater”:
1. Do not force your child to eat something they do not want. Instead try small portions of differ-ent foods and give your child the option to ask for more.
2. Keep a routine. Try to eat meals and snacks at the same time every day.
3. Be patient. Children may touch or smell new foods many times before actually trying it.
4. Set a good example. If you eat a variety of foods your child will likely follow your example.
5. Get the child involved. While at the grocery store have the child help pick out exciting new fruits or veggies to try later
Tip of the Month:Tip of the Month:
Try to scale back on sugary drinks and snacks in between meals. Instead of juice or other sugary drinks give your child water. Also try to stick to 1-3 snacks a day at a set time. If your child fills up on drinks and snacks throughout the day they
