Technology Awards continued...

On Thursday 23rd January, Chiswick School had the pleasure of hosting in-ternational schools from India and some Scandinavian countries; I was able to interview a few visitors to learn more about their experiences in Lon-don so far.

‘We’ve been to a couple of conferences and schools – it has been very inspir-ing so far,’ said Claus, a Danish visi-tor. ‘Chiswick School seems like a very traditional environment looking at the architecture, which contrasts the fast pace at which it’s moving forward in terms of technology, which I think is a great combination.’ Claus was also in-terested and enlightened by the use of the iPads within our school communi-ty: ‘It’s not the devices themselves, but the way in which you use them – this school in particular is very aware of that, and I think it's essential for every school to do so.’

I then had the opportunity to interview Emree, a Danish teacher:

Visitors from Sweden

Danish School Visit Interview

M: What are your first impressions of Chiswick School?E: I like it – it reminds me of the school that I work at back home, a Cathedral School, with a lot of green space and sports facilities.

M: What aspect of Chiswick School stood out to you the most?E: I really love the inspiring quotes that are put around the school – they are very inspiring and motivating. I also like the extensive use of technology.

M: Have you visited the BETT exhibi-tion, and if so, how did you find it?E: Yes, I did yesterday and the exhibi-tion at the O2 area was huge! It was a little overwhelming at first but I got to see many new technological advances, which was impressive.

M: What kind of differences do you see between Danish schools and British schools?E: In Denmark, I believe schools are based around more traditional stand-ings. Mr Ryan was talking about how many teachers move to different schools in their careers, however in Denmark, most teachers are devoted to one school – I know of some teachers that have taught in the same place for forty years!

Talking to the different teachers was inspiring and enlightening; it made me realise the different opportunities and facilities available to us, and how fortunate we are as a school. Chiswick School News hopes that the Interna-tional Schools learnt as much as we did!

be seen at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6qY46rW95SA. Mr Lawrence and our two star year 7 students went to the show this afternoon to pick up the prize and meet the press, cementing our growing position as a leader in the use of mobile technologies in the classroom.

23rd January also saw the news that Mr Witts has been shortlisted in the Secondary Impact category of their annual awards. This for his work with Street Kids in Uganda involving our year 9 students. Congratulations Mr Witts, a fantastic achievement.

As part of International Schools week, on Friday 24th January a large group of teachers from all across Sweden came to visit our school in order to share ideas and learn from our school's strat-egies and methods of teaching. They were the fourth and final group to re-ceive the well rehearsed presentation from Mr Ryan.

He started with an inspirational quote “Educating the mind without educating the heart is no education at all!” The presentation included the key objec-tives of our school, with the aim of the presentation to explain what our school is all about. After another quote “excel-lence is doing a common thing in an un-common way” along with more aims to create a positive learning environment; it was followed by a tour around the schools buildings, with excellent stu-dent tour guides from various years, to view lessons in all subjects taking place.

The teachers were taken around the school to see how technology in the school is used, as well as the building itself, so they can take back all the good ideas and use it to improve their own schools. We interviewed a Headteacher from a school in Sweden who told us that "we have a very good headmaster with lots of energy and ideas." Another visitor told us that our school is very different to Swedish schools, which hold only 500-600 students.

All visitors we talked to told us that they had enjoyed the trip thoroughly and had learnt lots to take back with them. Well done Mr Ryan for an extremely in-spirational presentation, showing our school to its best to all our visitors!By Joe sMale and Katie davies
