CLINICAL 2ND XV PUT AWAY BRAVE SCOTTISH SIDE CHISWICK 2ND XV 60 LONDON SCOTTISH IV 0

Chiswick went in to this match high on confidence having played very well the previous week against Ealing Cougars. Despite the very one sided score line this was quite a competitive match which saw Scottish fight and work hard to the bitter end but ultimately they were comprehensively outgunned in every area of the field by a team who were keen to demonstrate their ability in the shop window with coaches Rocky & Hoiley watching on from the touchline.

Some late changes in personnel led to Sam Biss playing hooker and Jim Spencer moving to tight head prop. Given that Scottish had confirmed the fixture on the premise that they would not field a competitive front row, Chiswick were somewhat surprised when the opposition turned up confirming that they would in fact be happy to go contested. However, as it transpired Scottish probably wished they had gone uncontested after Biss consistently won both his own feed and also the Scottish ball for most of the afternoon with the front row dominant.

From the kick off, Chiswick went straight on the attack hitting hard lines and making good inroads in to the Scottish defence. Luckman steered Chiswick up the park and deep in to Scottish territory. Chiswick pressurised at a scrum and a poor clearance kick allowed Rhemayo Brooks supported by Ben Hird to attack from deep. The two combined well and just when the move appeared to break down with a loose pass hitting the deck, Riki Darroche was the first to react scooping up the ball to score under the posts. Keith Luckman saddled himself up for his kicking duties for the day and duly converted 7 – 0. This early score set the tone for the day as the Chiswick forwards relentlessly attacked at every opportunity breaking the gain line with a series of runs and offloads out of the tackle which often left the Scottish defence bewildered.

From the re-start strong runs first from Josh Noble and then Nik Davy put Chis deep in the Scottish 22. Some well controlled phases of play and the overlap was created with quick hands along the backs allowing Thady Gavin a straight forward finish beating the cover in the left corner. The conversion was missed. Another onslaught from Chiswick saw Hallewell come close to scoring after a jinking run but having been stopped short Chiswick were rewarded with a scrum close to the Scottish line. A quick drive from number 8 Rory Fletcher who had a superb game, led to quick ball being distributed for a clever dummy switch giving Luckman the space to ghost through the Scottish defence untouched for another score under the posts with the conversion successful, Chiswick led 19 – 0.

Chiswick’s appetite for scores was growing but there was a real team mentality about how they were going about their business. The combined efforts of the front five drive & speedy back row pressure forced another clearance kick from the Scottish fly half to again miss touch, this put Brooks and Hird on the counter once more & with a biblical parting of the waves in front of him Hird compounded the Scottish kicking error with a streaking diagonal run that saw him score 15 meters from the touchline. Luckman found some form and slotted the conversion.

The Chiswick back division were enjoying a purple patch on the back of a dominant pack and when another forward break this time from Biss set up quick possession Gabs Lowe quickly worked the ball back blind to find Hallewell and Noble waiting. Simple hands putting Noble in for a well-deserved first score of the season. Next, it was Brooks striding down the wing, beating a number of players he went in for what looked like being a great solo effort but somehow he contrived to lose the ball when threatened by the dwarf like scrum half and the score alluded him.

Brooks was not to be denied and was determined to make a mends. Another move down the right was probably the pick of the day, as the forwards made the line break Fletcher combined with Hallewell who set the ruck. Quick hands by Luckman to Noble who then brilliantly avoided taking contact to put Brooks in for a score in the right corner. The conversion again was missed. 36 – 0 at half time.

After a quick chat from the coaches, the second half instruction was to keep going for the jugular and put on a big score. Scottish to their credit kept fighting and came out for the second half looking to get a score of their own. Chiswick however were just proving too strong in the contact areas and after some more good work on the ground from Tom Adams Chis were rewarded with another try as replacement fullback Josh Hunter put in a kick & chase. Gathering his own kick Hunter was caught just short of the line, but there was support to clear the ensuing ruck and Fletcher picked up to run in unopposed down the blind. Scottish were now pinned in their 22 and with clearance kicks coming back with interest they decided that a running game was the way forward. This was also a futile tactic with Chiswick’s fringe and midfield defence were rock solid, Scottish knocked the ball on multiple times and were kept hopelessly stuck in their 22. Chiswick the took advantage of one of those mistakes and won their scrum setting up a good set play move for the backs to allow Brooks to break through the Scottish defence scoring out to the left. Luckman converted.

From the re-start Nik Davy broke from deep and found Hallewell supporting on the inside, seemingly running away from his support he eventually managed to find the deep lying Thady Gavin. The long pass left Gavin a lot to do but the big Irish winger cut in beating a number of players before carrying a few over the line with him for a score near the posts. Luckman missed the kick.

With time running out Chiswick continued to press for more scores but as tiredness set in some of the quality tailed off with mistakes becoming more frequent. There was still time though for one last effort and suitably it fell for man of the match Rory Fletcher to put the icing on the cake to romp in from 15 metres out, also making the conversion as easy as possible for Luckman who converted the final score. Shortly after, the referee called the game a few minutes early which suited everyone as frantic pace had taken its toll on both sides.

2ND XV CAPTAINS VIEW BY CHRIS HALLEWELL I took some time on Sunday to reflect on the last month of rugby for the 2nd team. We played four, won three, lost one. We sit top of Merit Table One taking an unbeaten record in to October. Our performances have steadily improved and the progress we have made as a squad is now being rewarded with performances on the pitch. New combinations are bedding in and summer recruits have found their feet. There is a belief and unselfish team spirit which we have taken forward from last season that makes us a difficult team to beat which is very encouraging but we cannot allow complacency to creep in. Saturday was a case of playing a team that didn’t have the firepower to beat us but we needed to play our structures & be patient to break down a plucky Scottish defence. We did put up a big score which arguably could have been bigger had we been a little bit more clinical in our execution or had our decision making been slightly sharper. If we are hard on ourselves we should feel we could have done a little bit better, but not take away the fact that we did a good job and put away a team that have caused us more difficulty in the past. Defensively we had to work hard to keep Scottish out and I think that the defensive organisation was excellent all day. Even when Scottish got over our line they were denied by some extremely committed and adept Chiswick work on the ground to prevent them scoring. Looking forward to getting back to Merit Table rugby this weekend and a top of the table home clash with Staines 2’s. Cheers,

Geri

CHIEFS ACHIEVE ANOTHER IMPRESSIVE WIN RACAL DECCA 5 CHISWICK CHIEFS 62

REPORT BY STEVE FERBRACHE

It was a try fest!!! There was laughter, blood, sweat and tears out in sunny Kingston on Saturday afternoon as the Chiswick Chiefs arrived, in dribs and drabs, to play a friendly fixture against Racal Decca. Chiswick didn’t have enough cars to get all the players to the game so James Edgeson turned around 100m from Decca’s pitch to drive back and collect Captain Steve and Hooker Steve from Riverside lands. An early but legitimate call of “Shot-gun” from Captain Steve meant that Hooker Steve had to travel in the back of the van with Edgeson’s various Lock-Smith tools. Even more impressive was the commitment and general effort of Euan Pringle who cycled from the club to Putney to collect a hire car, back to the club to collect Team Manager Simon Bartley and then down to Kingston. He then ended up playing the second half for the opposition too. Legendary club-man behaviour.

So, to the rugby. We hammered them. The first try was scored by impressive debutant Ollie Vivian who filled in on the wing (normally a flanker) – an excellent early try. He scored another one later on too which capped off a great first game. Decca scored one from a cross field kick that appeared to be more out of desperation than anything else, it was finished well despite our best efforts.

Loads of people scored after that so I’ll just try to remember them as best I can:

Second row and French man Will L’Hevde took time off from impregnating stray dogs to pop up in the mid field and show some pace to score. One presumes his ability to run so fast has been passed down through the generations of Frenchmen before him who spent their time running away during the War. Will’s ability to finish from the 22m line is only surpassed by his countrymen’s ability to hate multi-culturalism.

In case you didn’t know already, I’m Welsh.

James Edgson scored an impressive hatrick of tries after realising he is too strong and aggressive to chip over the top – one of his tries showed a remarkable turn of pace to round 5 players on the outside – quite remarkable. His other tries basically involved a Simon Slattery style piston hand-off followed up with a charming forearm smash – a combination blow from the little powerhouse. Centre partner Jonno Roach-Ellis-Roach-Ellis-Ellis had an excellent game; weaving around and breaking through tackles to create space – he crossed the line once for a well deserved try. Continued on next page..........

CHIEFS ACHIEVE ANOTHER IMPRESSIVE WIN

(Continued) Flanker Furious James White impressed by scoring two great tries. The first was from a Roach-Ellis break down the wing – Furious was in close support and tore the ball from opposition hands to dive over. His second was from a chip over the top which bounced kindly in the try-area. He dived on it without hesitation just like he dives on stories about Polish-homosexual-benefit cheats when at his desk at the Daily Mail head office. Number 8 Nathan McEuan had an impressive game – making breaks and generally dominating – he was rewarded with a well taken try. Man of the Match and hairless man-child Will Halsey scored a great try too. The full back had a dominant performance; taking every high ball and running back at the opposition with pace and guile. The 8 year old father of two gave an all round display totally deserving of the award; his guidance and communication from the back was especially effective. There was another try – I think hooker Steve Davis got one – he almost certainly did. He should also get a mention for taking 8 balls against the head in the first half and 5 in the second. A number of players didn’t get on the score sheet but contributed very well to an overall team victory. Marko Crab-salad and Nick “DFS Boxing day” Sale (sorry!) were solid as ever as was Sonny Bill Addison. Addison set up a try with a All-Black style back-of-the hand offload in mid-field – he later wrenched the ball from scrum-half Steve Ferbrache’s had to take a quick tap penalty – he promptly fell over which made it all worth it. Addison also made lots of noises when he hurt his ankle – nearby dog walkers probably assumed an Elk was being sexually assaulted by an angry group of mountain lions. He eventually piped down and got on with it. Chris Towells passed the ball a record 5 times too which capped off a typically strong performance. Winger Austin Conncannonannan did outstandingly well on the outside making a number of try saving tackles. Half-back partners Steve Ferbrache and Nathan Todd decided to brand themselves as “Points Deficit Increase Enablers” as opposed to actual try scorers - very much a pair that like to develop the overall concept of a try, measuring its success against Key Performance Indicators of course. It was a great victory for the Chiefs and a great team performance. It was also a good laugh – especially when the majority of the laughs come from Nathan Todd’s goal kicking ratio. In summary - Nathan Todd can’t kick goals. A great day for the Chiefs as a team and some very strong individual performances. Next week the Chiefs return to league to face London Welsh Occies. Sale, Davis, Addison, Marko, Cheese-Eating Surrender Monkey, White, Towsey, McEaun, Ferbrache, Todd, Edgeson, Roach-Ellis, Vivian, Concannon, Halsey.

VETS START SEASON WITH DEFEAT CHISWICK VETS 17 OLD ACTONIANS VETS 27

The Vets started their season on Saturday against local rivals Old Actonians in a friendly match that unfortunetly at the end was anything but friendly. Actonians had already got Chiswicks backs up with a rather youthful bench that wasn’t in “Vets spirt” but the editor is told the rugby on display was first class (beqr in mind it was Kelvin telling me this) and whilst losing the Chiswick side are confidant with some players back from Saga holidays and trips to the bingo halls cruising for women the rematch can very much be won. Sadly the game was abandoned at the end and a Chiswick player was shown a red card for over exuberant protesting of a decision by the ref.

STAGS RECRUIT MANAGER

Kelvin Campell has managed to pull off a coup and made a star signing for the Stags in confirming ex Player Phil Barnfield as Manager. The Club is extremely pleased that Phil has stepped forward and wishes him and the Stags the best of luck for the season.

MEMBERSHIP LOYALTY CARD SCHEME As the club looks to broaden our reach within the local community we are pleased to announce that we have now set up a membership loyalty scheme with a number of local Chiswick High Road Businesses. Currently we have signed up 17 businesses to the scheme which allows our club members to benefit from discounts on products and services with our local providers. A great deal of effort has gone in to providing this scheme in an initiative which benefits our members but also helps to drive footfall to our local high road partners. Once your subs have been paid to Euan for the season, paid up playing and non-playing members will receive the discounts for the partners detailed when producing your valid CRFC 2011/12 membership card. It is not just the players this applies to. Wives and Girlfriends can also benefit if they are paid up members so please ask them to become non playing members as the value of the discounts will far outweigh the cost of membership if used regularly. This is a very important initiative for the club as we hope that in future these businesses will look to get involved with the club on a wider level and possibly develop in to sponsorship partners. We hope to add further partners to this list and would ask that if you know of any companies that might be interested to direct them to Geri by email [email protected]

CHAIRMANS CHAT – FROM THE SOFA OF MR KELVIN CAMPBELL

Two superb results from the 2's and 3's..... But vets come up short. A very positive weekend on the field, the 2nd team squad lead by Chris Halliwell seizing the opportunity to impress the watching coaches, with the 1's taking a week off to train at altitude the 2's stepped up to prove what we already suspected , the strength in depth is getting stronger. To put 64 points on London Scottish 4's is truly encouraging. The Chiefs travelled to Racal Decca, a side we lost to 3 years ago without Big chief Rob, to record a 54 point victory, lead by little chief Steve F... Now that's progress, regrettably we missed out on a clean sweep with the vets coming up short on their first fixture of the season, but with a squad of 22 making themselves available signs are encouraging. Lindsey update.... Lindsey is still up north receiving TLC from her parents as she continues to recover from her accident, with the collection money we were able to send a beautiful bunch of flowers and some vouchers to a health spa so she can treat /pamper herself when she's back on her feet, and she can't wait to see you all at the world cup breakfast to personally say thank you . League game lunch, if you can you should, open to everyone £20 for 3 courses plus wine !!! This week before the 1's show us the effects of training at altitude, I understand our leader Tonks cancelled the booze ban on the basis it did not help the Welsh. So if your not playing this week due to injury too old or just lazy come along for some good food and pre march banter To reserve a place please call Ed Haywood 01252874354 or Steve Kick 07521050305 Four fixtures again this week , 3 at Riverside Lands, rugby for all, as we continue the quest to turn our small club into a big club (please make yourself available via Teamer ASAP, if your not sure how to ASK !) Finally, the letters have gone out to the school, responses have been encouraging, mini's rugby will be launched at Chiswick RFC early November , help will be required, don't be shy, you club needs you Best wishes

Kelvin.

SOCIAL NEWS FROM THE VERY SMALL DESK OF WEE MAN RWC Final Brekkie Cancellation/Bonfire Night Unfortunately due to the unsociable hour on the day of our lord, the uptake of the RWC Final Breakfast was low, so a decision has been made to cancel this event. Please ensure you do not turn up at the clubhouse expecting a warm breakfast and great seat for the game, as the clubhouse will be shut! On a more positive note, I can announce the next event in the social calendar!!! Once again Chiswick RFC will be holding what we feel is the best fireworks display in West London on Saturday 5th November! The club arranges the Bonfire and attendees (players and guests) bring the fireworks, which produces a great display - All firework types welcome! Please invite friends, family and their children! If you consider the amount of players and guests, you can see it really is going to be another great show! The night will follow the 1st XV in the Intermediate Cup against Ipswich RFC. Fixtures for the 2nd XV, Chiefs and Stags are still to be confirmed. Please support the teams playing at home. Kick offs will be 2.30pm and we'll be aiming to start the firework show from about 7.30pm. Note to players playing on the day - You are all expected to bring a firework (even if you are not attending). Drop them off at the club for the team meets, or bring them on the night! It's a family evening, so as stated bring everyone! The doors are open... See you there.

Cheers,

Wee Man. X
