Haiti

Introduction This project was for English and Math.

In this project we had to pick a country and find a health problem that it has.

We had to compare it to 3 other countries, but still use the same health problem.

The country I chose was Haiti because they recently had an earthquake now they are have a Cholera outbreak.

I compared it to Venezuela, Dominican Republic, Senegal

Cholera Cholera is a infection of small intestine which comes

from a bacterium called Vibrio cholerae. Cholera usually causes watery diarrhea and vomiting. You usually get infected by Cholera when you drink contaminated water and not proper hygienic food. Plus after you diarrhea and vomit a lot it can lead to dehydration then death.

Haiti Due to the earthquake in 2010 Haiti is the the country with the most

cholera cases

The Population of Haiti is approx. 10 million people and out of those people 3 % of the population is infected with cholera every six months.

On average every six months Haiti has 287,749 Cholera cases.

Haiti is an island in the Atlantic Ocean and because of the earthquake Haiti’s water supply was ruined and they had no choice but to drink the water that came from the Atlantic Ocean which became infected with feces, bacteria and etc.

Most people in Haiti are below the average line when it comes to money. So they cant afford to have clean water and because of that every day at least 23 people die from cholera infection

Graph Explanation The pie chart on the previous slide shows you how most of the

population is healthy. Plus how many people get infected with cholera every six months. It also shows that some people water supplies could be contaminated with feces and bacteria's and etc. On a positive side most people are not infected with Cholera but this could be because they don’t live in as much poverty as the people who are infected. Lastly it shows how by the end of 15 years the whole population could be infected if it continues like this.

Venezuela The way Venezuela started to have Cholera cases is when a

group of 11 people went to Dominican Republic a place near Haiti, for a wedding the food was contaminated but the didn't find out till they were back in Venezuela.

It started of in February 2011 with only 11 cases within a couple of weeks it has gone up to 452 Cholera cases.

At least everyday 31 get infected with Cholera.

Cholera is a new infection in Venezuela so only 0.002 % of the population is infected by Cholera.

Venezuela’s population is around 27 million people.

The graph show that there are more healthier people in Venezuela. one reason could be because Cholera is a new infection in Venezuela. Everyday at least 30 people get infected every day. So if Cholera keeps on spreading by the end of the year at least 11,000 people would be infected

Dominican Republic The population of Dominican Rebuplic is similar to Haitis it is around 10 million

people out of those people in 2010, 0.002 % of them were infected by Cholera

Dominican Republic is a little country that borders Haiti.

Dominican Republic got Cholera cases from Haiti and that’s because they don’t have a large border and Haiti suffered a terrible earthquake which basically cut of most clean water supplies and because they are so close Dominican Republic suffered too.

Most people in Dominican Republic similar to Haiti are living in poverty. So because of that they don’t have hygienic medical facilities and they cant afford to have clean water and because of that every day at least 23 people get infected from cholera infection.

The first time Dominican Republic had a Cholera case was November 17 2010 it was from a construction from Haiti that brought the illness. Within a couple of week there was 56 cases and in early December of 2010 the was around 110 Cholera cases confirmed.

The graph show that there are more healthier people in Dominican Republic. One reason could be because Cholera is just starting but it is rapidly spreading. Everyday at least 23 people get infected every day but this changes all the time. So if Cholera keeps on spreading by the end of the year at least 8400 people would be infected.

Senegal Senegal has had a lot of cholera cases in years before but

in 2010 there was not that many.

In 2010 there was 4 Cholera cases.

Senegal like most countries in Africa life in poverty and they don’t have clean enough water and not very hygienic hospitals.

Senegal's population is around 13 million people and out of those people 0.00004 % are infected by Cholera

This graph shows the past 4 years cholera cases in Senegal. It is kind of like a rollercoaster it keeps going up and down one reason is because in 2005 is when the first cholera cases broke out and they were not prepared. Then in 2006 they solved most of the cases. Then 2007 there was 2 major outbreaks. Then 2008 most cases were solved. In 2009-2010 there was only 4 cases this could be because they enough vaccines.

Conclusion As you can see from the information I

gave you. That Haiti is becoming a nation that is being infected with Cholera rapidly. That is why the The United Nation should help them by maybe building more wells that provide clean water and by making more professional health facilities to help the people that are infected with Cholera.
