LDL’s vs. HDL’sLDL’S BAD HDL’S GOOD Low Density

Lipoproteins Slowly builds up within

the walls of the arteries that lead to the heart and brain. Together with other substances it forms a plaque or hard deposit that can clog those arteries

High Density Lipoproteins

Carry the LDL’s to the liver where they are disposed. The HDL’s protect the arteries by clearing the “LDL’s” from the blood. Higher levels of HDL’s help to protect against heart attack.

RISK FACTORS of High Cholesterol

Lifestyle Contributors:  Diet- HIGH Fat intake, fried & “fast” food  Smoking- Smoking reduces HDL  Obesity-Obesity is a major risk factor for coronary heart disease. This also

influences cholesterol due to the intake of food high in saturated fats.  Inactivity-Studies show that exercise can have a steady elevating effect on HDL’s.

Genetic Contributors: Gender- Men @ higher risk Age- Being obese at a young age will increase your chances of being obese at an

older age.   Family History- Uncontrollable  Other Medical Conditions-Other conditions such as kidney diseases, diabetes, and

hypothyroidism can cause abnormal cholesterol levels.
