CHRIST CHURCH CATHEDRAL, NELSON Sunday Bulletin –20 th September 2020 25th Sunday in Ordinary Time/Te Rātapu Rua Tekau mā whā o He noa iho Welcome to Christ Church Cathedral, Nelson. Children are welcome at our services. There are toys in the Quiet Room. Please feel free to take this publication away with you / leave for re-use. Dear Cathedralites, It’s a thrill for us at our 10 am service to welcome Bishop Steve as he comes to confirm Janine, Quan and Stephen. During our confirmation classes for the last eight weeks they have been joined by Jenny Wells, Joc Smith and Beatrice Clover. The latter are sponsoring the confirmees. During the eight weeks we have learned more about the Bible, the Holy Spirit, Sacraments, prayer, church history, evangelism, prayer and much more. Thank you to the Revd. Nigel Whinney, John Laing and Patsy Hawke who have assisted in the teaching while others have come along to share their testimonies which has been very inspiring. I preached at St Christopher’s in Blenheim last Sunday. I was well hosted by the Revd. Kevin Gwynne and Sheryll. They were insistent that I meet the neighbours. Low and behold, I met up with my first cousin once removed and his four dogs. I didn’t know Don McKay was up this way so it was wonderful to catch up. My mum and his grand- dad were brother and sister, brought up in Fairview, Timaru. Congratulations to Ruth Williams who celebrated her 90 th birthday this week. Ruth was a music teacher and still tickles the ivory on her very impressive old grand piano. Ask her to play ‘Für Elise’ and she is away. It is nice to have Mark Meeske (Christ First) to preach at our 7 pm Word and Worship service tonight. Mark is a keen supporter of our local Ministers’ Association. The staff team learned a lot from Susan Finnegan, an ex-police officer who came to our staff meeting this week. She emphasised the need to address people’s behaviour. Often when people get challenged, they defend themselves by accusing you of racism, sexism or any other–isms. She said to always address their behaviour. She is dead against the legalisation of marijuana. Why on earth would we not listen to police who are so often at the frontline of carnage in New Zealand. Susan described the impact of marijuana especially on young people. I find it horrifying that we should take all this to a referendum. It politicises what is a health, educational and ethical issue. Don’t forget that daylight saving starts next Sunday. Make sure you put your clocks forward on Saturday night. Hopefully and prayerfully we will be back to level 1 by then so all those of you who have been watching live-streaming at the Cathedral for the last few months will be able to come to join in on our fellowship. It also means we can resume having our morning teas and suppers together, which is so important a part of gathering together in Christ’s name.

I spent last Friday visiting all the veterinary clinics around Nelson hoping that we will have a grand attendance at next week’s pet service. Andrew Newton will hopefully bring one of his sheepdogs. We will see if he can round up a few cats and guinea pigs and other dogs let alone any sheep that happen to be in the Cathedral next week. Don’t miss it and make sure you invite others to our special pet service next Sunday at 10 am. It will be fun if not noisy. Have a great week. In His service, Mike

Please be seated for Old Testament Reading

Numbers 6:22-27 Read by Janine Booth & Quan Pham

The Lord spoke to Moses, saying: Speak to Aaron and his sons, saying, Thus you shall bless the Israelites: You shall say to them, The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make his face to shine upon you, and be gracious to you; the Lord lift up his countenance upon you, and give you peace. So, they shall put my name on the Israelites, and I will bless them.

The Epistle 1 Peter 2:1-10

read by Janine Booth & Beatrice Clover

Rid yourselves, therefore, of all malice, and all guile, insincerity, envy, and all slander. 2 Like newborn infants, long for the pure, spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow into salvation— 3 if indeed

you have tasted that the Lord is good. 4 Come to him, a living stone, though rejected by mortals yet chosen and precious in God’s sight, and 5 like living stones, let yourselves be built into

Psalm 145: 1-8 1. I will exalt you O God my King: I will bless your name forever and ever. 2. Every day will I bless you: and praise your name for ever and ever. 3. Great is the Lord and wonderfully worthy to be praised: His greatness is past searching

out. 4. One generation shall praise your works to another: and declare your mighty acts. 5. As for me I will be talking of the glorious splendour of your majesty: I will tell the story

of your marvellous works. 6. Men shall recount the power of your terrible deeds: and I will proclaim your greatness. 7. Their lips shall flow with the remembrance of your abundant goodness: they shall shout

for joy at your righteousness. 8. The Lord is gracious and compassionate: slow to anger and of great goodness.

a spiritual house, to be a holy priest-hood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. 6 For it stands in scripture: ‘See, I am laying in Zion a stone, a cornerstone chosen and precious; and whoever believes in him will not be put to shame.’ 7 To you then who believe, he is precious; but for those who do not believe, ‘The stone that the builders rejected has become the very head of the corner’, 8 and ‘A stone that makes them

stumble, and a rock that makes them fall.’ They stumble because they disobey the word, as they were destined to do. 9 But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s own people, in order that you may proclaim the mighty acts of him who called you out of darkness into his marvellous light. 10 Once you were not a people, but now you are God’s people; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.

Please stand to sing the Gradual Hymn CP 581 “Take my life and let it be” (Quan’s choice)

Please remain standing and turn to face the Gospel reader

The Holy Gospel John 16:7-16

Read by Reverend Nigel Whinney

5 Take my will, and make it Thine: it shall be no longer mine. take my heart: it is Thine own; it shall be Thy royal throne.

6 Take my love; my Lord, I pour at thy feet its treasure-store. take myself, and I will be ever, only, all for Thee.

Frances Ridley Havergal

1 Take my life and let it be consecrated, Lord, to Thee; take my moments and my days, let them flow in ceaseless praise.

2 Take my hands, and let them move at the impulse of thy love. take my feet, and let them be swift and beautiful for Thee.

3 Take my voice, and let me sing always, only, for my King; take my lips, and let them be filled with messages from Thee.

4 Take my silver and my gold;

not a mite would I withhold. take my intellect, and use every power as Thou shalt choose.

After the announcement

All sing Praise and glory to God

7 Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you. 8 And when he comes, he will prove the world wrong about sin and righteousness and judgement: 9 about sin, because they do not believe in me; 10 about righteousness, because I am going to the Father and you will see me no longer; 11 about judgement, because the ruler of this world has been condemned. 12 ‘I still have many things

to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. 13 When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth; for he will not speak on his own, but will speak whatever he hears, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. 14 He will glorify me, because he will take what is mine and declare it to you. 15 All that the Father has is mine. For this reason I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you.16A little while, and you will no longer see me, and again a little while, and you will see me.’

Reader: This is the Gospel of Christ All sing Praise to Christ, the Word.

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial, and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever. Amen

Minister of Liturgy We worship God with our tithes and offerings as we sing CP 375 (Stephen’s choice)

1 Amazing Grace! how sweet the sound that saved a wretch like me! I once was lost, but now am found, was blind, but now I see.

2 ‘Twas grace that taught my heart to fear, and grace my fears relieved; how precious did that grace appear the hour I first believed!

3 Through many dangers, toils and snares I have already come: 'tis grace hath brought me safe thus far, and grace will lead me home.

4 When we’ve been there ten thousand years Bright shining as the sun We’ve no less days to sing God’s praise Than when we first begun.

The Great Thanksgiving

Celebrant To you, Lord, belongs the greatness, and the power, and the glory, and the victory and the majesty.

All All that is in the heavens and the earth is yours, and of your own we give you.

Celebrant The Lord is here. All God’s Spirit is with us.

Celebrant Lift up your hearts. All We lift them to the Lord

Celebrant Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. All It is right to offer thanks and praise.

Celebrant It is right indeed right, always and everywhere, to give thanks to you, the true and living God, through Jesus Christ. You are the source of life for all creation and you made us in your own image.

In your love for us you sent your Son to be our Saviour. In the fullness of time he became incarnate, and suffered death on the cross. You raised him in triumph, and exalted him in glory. Through him you send you Holy Spirit upon your church and make us your people. We rejoice this morning in the confirmation of Janine, Quan and Stephen as they publicly declare their faith in Christ. And so, we proclaim your glory, as we say

Holy, holy, holy Lord God of power and might: Heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest.

Please kneel or be seated

Celebrant To you indeed be glory, almighty God, because on the night before he died, Your Son, Jesus Christ, took bread; when He had given you thanks, He broke it, gave it to His disciples, and said: Take, eat, this is my body which is given for you; do this to remember me.

John Newton

15

After supper He took the cup; when He had given you thanks, He gave it to them and said: This cup is the new covenant in my blood poured out for you; do this as often as you drink it, to remember me.

All Christ has died, Christ is risen, Christ will come again.

The Celebrant continues

Therefore, loving God, recalling now Christ’s death and resurrection, we ask you to accept this our sacrifice of praise. Send your Holy Spirit upon us and our cele-bration, that we may be fed with the body and blood of your Son and be filled with your life and goodness.

Strengthen us to do your work, and to be your body in the world. Unite us in Christ and give us your peace.

All this we ask through your Son Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom with you and the Holy Spirit be all honour and glory, now and for ever. Amen.

The Communion

Celebrant We break this bread to share in the body of Christ.

All We who are many are one body, for we all share the one bread.

We do not presume to come to your holy table, merciful Lord, trusting in our own righteousness, but in your great mercy. We are not worthy even to gather the crumbs from under your table. But you are the same Lord whose nature is always to have mercy. Grant us, therefore, gracious Lord, so to eat the body of your dear Son, Jesus Christ, and to drink his blood, that we may evermore dwell in him and he in us. Amen.

Those in the sanctuary receive communion as the choir sings the Agnus Dei.

The Invitation

The Celebrant invites the people saying

Draw near and receive the body and blood of our Saviour Jesus Christ in remembrance that he died for us. Let us feed on him in our hearts by faith with thanksgiving.

During communion the choir sings the anthem “The Lord bless you and keep you” (soloist Simon Booth) John Rutter

Minister of Liturgy Please stand to sing our final Hymn CP 538

1 O Jesus, I have promised to serve thee to the end; be Thou for ever near me, my Master and my Friend: I shall not fear the battle if thou art by my side, nor wander from the pathway if thou wilt be my guide.

2 O let me feel thee near me: the world is ever near; I see the sights that dazzle, the tempting sounds I hear; my foes are ever near me, around me and within; but, Jesus, draw thou nearer, and shield my soul from sin.

3 O let me hear Thee speaking in accents clear and still, above the storms of passion, the murmurs of self-will; O speak to reassure me, to hasten or control; O speak, and make me listen, Thou guardian of my soul. 4 O Jesus, Thou hast promised to all who follow Thee, that where thou art in glory there shall thy servant be; and, Jesus, I have promised to serve thee to the end: O give me grace to follow, my Master and my Friend.

May the grace of God's world, the guidance of His hand and the loving wisdom of His words fill your heart and light your way today and every day.

“Let your faith shine brightly so that all your

friends, family and everyone you meet can see Christ.”

From all at Nelson Cathedral

5 O let me see thy foot-marks, and in them plant mine own; my hope to follow duly is in thy strength alone: O guide me, call me, draw me, uphold me to the end; and then in heaven receive me, my Saviour and my Friend.

Psalm 119: 129-135 129 Wonderful are your commands: and therefore, my soul keeps them. 130 The unfolding of your word gives light: it gives understanding to the simple. 131 I open my mouth and draw in my breath: for I yearn for your commandments. 132 O turn to me and be merciful to me: as is your way with those who love your name. 133 Order my steps according to your word: that no evil may get mastery over me. 134 Deliver me from man’s oppression: that I may keep your precepts. 135 Make your face shine upon your servant: and teach me your statutes.

Ezekiel 33:23, 30-33

23 The word of the LORD came to me: 30 As for you, mortal, your people who talk to-gether about you by the walls, and at the doors of the houses, say to one another, each to a neighbour, ‘Come and hear what the word is that comes from the LORD.’ 31 They come to you as people come, and they sit before you as my people, and they hear your words, but they will not obey them. For flattery is on their lips, but their heart is set on their gain. 32 To them you are like a singer of love songs, one who has a beautiful voice and plays well on an instrument; they hear what you say, but they will not do it. 33 When this comes—and come it will!—then they shall know that a prophet has been among them.

Ezekiel 34:1-10

1 The word of the LORD came to me: 2 Mortal, prophesy against the shepherds of Is-rael: prophesy, and say to them—to the shepherds: Thus says the Lord GOD: Ah, you shepherds of Israel who have been feeding yourselves! Should not shepherds feed the sheep? 3 You eat the fat, you clothe yourselves with the wool, you slaughter the fatlings; but you do not feed the sheep. 4 You have not strengthened the weak, you have not healed the sick, you have not bound up the injured, you have not brought back the strayed, you have not sought the lost, but with force and harshness you have ruled them. 5 So they were scattered, because there was no shepherd; and scattered, they became food for all the wild animals. 6 My sheep were scattered, they wandered over all the mountains and on every high hill; my sheep were scattered over all the face of the earth, with no one to search or seek for them. 7 Therefore, you shepherds, hear the word of the LORD: 8 As I live, says the Lord GOD, because my sheep have become a prey, and my sheep have become food for all the wild animals, since there was no shepherd; and because my shepherds have not searched for my sheep, but the shepherds have fed

themselves, and have not fed my sheep; 9 therefore, you shepherds, hear the word of the LORD: 10 Thus says the Lord GOD, I am against the shepherds; and I will demand my sheep at their hand, and put a stop to their feeding the sheep; no longer shall the shepherds feed themselves. I will rescue my sheep from their mouths, so that they may not be food for them.

Acts 26 :1, 9 – 25

1 Agrippa said to Paul, ‘You have permission to speak for yourself.’ Then Paul stretched out his hand and began to defend himself: 9 ‘Indeed, I myself was con-vinced that I ought to do many things against the name of Jesus of Nazareth. 10 And that is what I did in Jerusalem; with authority received from the chief priests, I not only locked up many of the saints in prison, but I also cast my vote against them when they were being condemned to death. 11 By punishing them often in all the synagogues I tried to force them to blaspheme; and since I was so furiously enraged at them, I pursued them even to foreign cities.12 ‘With this in mind, I was travelling to Damascus with the authority and commission of the chief priests, 13 when at mid-day along the road, your Excellency, I saw a light from heaven, brighter than the sun, shining around me and my companions. 14 When we had all fallen to the ground, I heard a voice saying to me in the Hebrew[c] language, “Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me? It hurts you to kick against the goads.” 15 I asked, “Who are you, Lord?” The Lord answered, “I am Jesus whom you are persecuting. 16 But get up and stand on your feet; for I have appeared to you for this purpose, to appoint you to serve and testify to the things in which you have seen me[d] and to those in which I will appear to you. 17 I will rescue you from your people and from the Gen-tiles—to whom I am sending you 18 to open their eyes so that they may turn from darkness to light and from the power of Satan to God, so that they may receive forgiveness of sins and a place among those who are sanctified by faith in me.” 19 ‘After that, King Agrippa, I was not disobedient to the heavenly vision, 20 but de-clared first to those in Damascus, then in Jerusalem and throughout the countryside of Judea, and also to the Gentiles, that they should repent and turn to God and do deeds consistent with repentance. 21 For this reason the Jews seized me in the tem-ple and tried to kill me. 22 To this day I have had help from God, and so I stand here, testifying to both small and great, saying nothing but what the prophets and Moses said would take place: 23 that the Messiah[e] must suffer, and that, by being the first to rise from the dead, he would proclaim light both to our people and to the Gen-tiles.’ 24 While he was making this defence, Festus exclaimed, ‘You are out of your mind, Paul! Too much learning is driving you insane!’ 25 But Paul said, ‘I am not out of my mind, most excellent Festus, but I am speaking the sober truth.

PRAYER FOR OUR EARTH ENVIRONMENT: Creator Spirit, thank you; our land of Aotearoa is full of wonder. In Creation’s diversity all are valued in the power of your love. We sense your spirit in Nature, and our own spirit is nourished. When we sing of each flower that opens, each bird that sings, we pray for the will to take better care of Earth. Storms and drought are with us, our Boulder Bank is changing, our world is warming. Stir our minds to simplify our lives, re-use, reduce the dreaded plastic, for the sake of health, sea and landfill. Be with those who work in conservation, wildlife rescue, and who farm the land in new ways. In society’s need for progress, help us to make decisions that respect our environment. Source of Wisdom, You are concerned with us for the wellbeing of planet Earth. We turn to your presence. Guide us with your peace. Amen.

PRAYERS

ST BARNABAS PRAYER

SUNDAY 20th September: We praise You, our Lord and our God, for Your Church in India, which continues to grow even as violence and persecution grow. We ask Your special blessing on the many Christians from the l owest strata of the caste system, who are despised and discriminated against partly because they love and follow the Lord Jesus Christ and partly because of their hereditary po-sition in society; they have suffered terribly dur-ing Covid lockdown . May they know them-selves to be chosen and loved by You, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to the living God. We pray this in the Name of Jesus Christ. Amen (1 Peter 2:9-10)

Nelson Cathedral CHRISTIAN MEDITATION

Meditation is not something new. Rather it is central to the Christian experience and deeply rooted in Christian tradition. Meditation, also known as contemplative prayer, is the prayer of silence and listening.

This is the aim given by the Psalmist “Be still and know that I am God.”

All are welcome to join us for this ecumenical prayer- a time of silence, stillness and reflection.

Come and join our small, friendly community of Christian meditators. It is suitable for everyone, and easy to learn.
