Morning Prayer – July 12, 2020The Fifth Sunday after Trinity

Who Is This Man? Going Deeper

My wheelchair was the key to seeing all this happen—especially since God’s power always shows up best in weakness. So here I sit ... glad that I have not been healed on the outside, but glad that I have been healed on the inside. Healed from my own self-centered wants and wishes.

– Joni Eareckson Tada, A Place of Healing: Wrestling with the Mysteries of Suffering, Pain, and God’s Sovereignty

It is for this reason that the faith by which we believe in God is particularly necessary in this mortal life, so full of delusion and distress and uncertainty. God is the only source to be found of any good things, but especially of those which make a man good and those which will make him happy; only from him do they come into a man and attach themselves to a man.

– Augustine of Hippo, The Trinity

The glory of God is man fully alive. – Irenaeus

A Pastoral Note —

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

This worship bulletin has been put together for you during this time that our public worship gatherings have been canceled due to the COVID-19 outbreak. As you meet with your family, roommates, neighbors in your building, other members of CCNYC, or just by yourself, I hope it will be of help to you as you seek to worship and draw near to the Lord.

Though worship in the home and among families is not intended to and can never replace the corporate gathering of the whole congregation, it is nonetheless a good practice for all of us to develop. If you are not accustomed to doing ‘family worship’ it may seem odd at first, but I want to encourage you to keep pressing forward with it. As you do so, remember that it need not be complicated. The essence of family worship consists simply in singing, praying, and studying God’s Word together.

As we meet in our various homes and in small groups scattered throughout the city and region, please know that I am praying for all of you and longing to be meeting with you in person. In fact, I pray that our love and desire for meeting together will be strengthened because of this absence. What a sweet time of fellowship it will be when the Lord once again allows us to be together in person to worship Him!

Your pastor,Keith

“The more we worship God in secret, the fitter shall we be for family worship, and the more we worship God in our families, the fitter shall we be for public worship.” – Rev. John Angier (1605-1677)

ReflectionA quiet moment to prepare our heartsHave mercy on me, O God, according to your steadfast love;according to your abundant mercy blot out my transgressions. (Psalm 51:1)

A period of silence is kept.

O Lord, open our lips; And our mouth shall proclaim your praise.

O God, make speed to save us; O Lord, make haste to help us.

Praise the Lord. The Lord’s name be praised!

Confession

After a brief silence for reflection, all reply saying the words in bold. Most merciful Father, we humbly admit that we need your help.We confess that we have wandered from your way like lost sheep. We have followed too much the devices and desires of our own hearts,

and have failed to do what is right. You alone can save us.Have mercy upon us, Lord;

wipe out our sins and teach us to forgive others.Turn our hearts to love and obey you.Bring forth in us the fruit of the Spirit that we may live as disciples of Christ. This we ask in the name of Jesus our Savior. Amen.

Words of Comfort and AssuranceFor my Father’s will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in him shall have eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day. (John 6:40)

Hear and receive the good news of the gospel: in Jesus Christ, we are forgiven. Thanks be to God!

A Prayer for the Hearing of God’s Word

Blessed Lord, who has caused all holy Scriptures to be written for our learning: Grant that we might hear them, read, mark, learn, and inwardly digest them, so that by patience and the comfort of your holy Word, we may embrace and ever hold fast the blessed hope of everlasting life, which you have given us in our Savior Jesus Christ. Amen.

Responsive Psalm — Psalm 41 Answer me when I call, O God of my righteousness! You have given me relief when I was in distress. Be gracious to me and hear my prayer!2 O men, how long shall my honor be turned into shame? How long will you love vain words and seek after lies?3 But know that the Lord has set apart the godly for himself; the Lord hears when I call to him.4 Be angry, and do not sin; ponder in your own hearts on your beds, and be silent.5 Offer right sacrifices, and put your trust in the Lord.6 There are many who say, “Who will show us some good? Lift up the light of your face upon us, O Lord!”7 You have put more joy in my heart than they have when their grain and wine abound.8 In peace I will both lie down and sleep; for you alone, O Lord, make me dwell in safety.

First Bible Reading — Mark 2:1-121 And when Jesus returned to Capernaum after some days, it was reported

that he was at home. 2 And many were gathered together, so that there was no more room, not even at the door. And he was preaching the word to them. 3 And they came, bringing to him a paralytic carried by four men. 4 And when they could not get near him because of the crowd, they removed the roof above him, and when they had made an opening, they let down the bed on which the paralytic lay. 5 And when Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, “Son, your sins are forgiven.” 6 Now some of the scribes were sitting there, questioning in their hearts, 7 “Why does this man speak like that? He is blaspheming! Who can forgive sins but God alone?” 8 And immediately Jesus, perceiving in his spirit that they thus questioned within themselves, said to them, “Why do you question these things in your hearts? 9 Which is easier, to say to the paralytic, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Rise, take up your bed and walk’? 10 But that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins”—he said to the paralytic— 11 “I say to you, rise, pick up your bed, and go home.” 12 And he rose and immediately picked up his bed and went out before them all, so that they were all amazed and glorified God, saying, “We never saw anything like this!”

This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

Second Bible Reading — 1 John 1:5-105 This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God

is light, and in him is no darkness at all. 6 If we say we have fellowship with him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. 7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin. 8 If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we say we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.

This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

The Apostles’ Creed

I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, sufferedunderPontiusPilate, wascrucified, died, andwasburied; he descended to the dead.On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come again to judge the living and the dead.I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic* church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.*The ‘catholic’ church is the totality of God’s people through the ages who hold firm to the classic teachings of Christ’s apostles.

Prayers

The Lord be with you.And with your spirit.

Let us pray.

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your Name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth, as in heaven.Give us today our daily bread.Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us.Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours

now and for ever. Amen.

The leader continues,Lord, show us your mercy,

and grant us your salvation.

Lord, govern the leaders of the nations, and mercifully hear our prayers.

Clothe your ministers with righteousness, and make your chosen people joyful.

Lord, save your people, and bless your inheritance.

Give peace in our time, O Lord, for you are our help and strength.

Create in us clean hearts, O God,and renew us by your Holy Spirit.

A Prayer for TodayGrant, O Lord, we beseech you, that the course of this world may be so peaceably ordered by your governance, that your Church may joyfully serve you in all godly quietness; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. (BCP 1662)

AlmightyGod,ourstrongtowerofdefenseintimeoftrouble:Weoffer you praise and heartfelt thanks for our deliverance from the dangers which lately surround us and for your gracious gift of peace. We confess that your goodness alone has preserved us; and we ask you still to continue your mercies toward us, that we may always know and acknowledge you as our Savior and mighty Deliverer; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Prayers for God’s people, the nations, and people in need are said, concluding with:The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, be with us all evermore. Amen.
