Letter from our Minister
Dear Friends
Twenty years ago it was my fortune to become the probationer minister at Cramond Kirk, under
the supervision of Russell Barr. I like to tell people that I taught him everything I knew but I am
very aware of the time and effort Russell put into forming and supporting the parish minister I
now am. We have remained friends as well as colleagues ever since, often meeting for lunch and
putting the world to rights, and it was Russell who suggested that I apply to Corstorphine Old
Parish when it became vacant in 2005, something I blame him for on the bad days, and thank him
for on the good days. Russell was Interim Moderator here when I was on maternity leave and
then baptised Sophie, so he and his family hold a special place in the lives of me and my family.
I was delighted when Russell told me he had been asked to become the next Moderator of the
General Assembly of the Church of Scotland, a position that will see him moderate or chair the
General Assembly in May, and spend a year visiting presbyteries throughout Scotland and part-
ner churches further afield, as well as participating in national events and occasions as they
arise. I was equally delighted, but very surprised when Russell asked if I would be one of his two
chaplains throughout Assembly week and the rest of his moderatorial year, along with Ian Gil-
mour, another former probationer of Russell’s and the minister of St Andrew’s and St George’s
West. Being Moderator’s chaplain involves accompanying the Moderator to the General Assembly
and occasionally on other trips through the year, offering a listening ear and a supportive shoul-
der and any words of wisdom that might seem appropriate. This means I’ll be away from the par-
ish for the whole of the Assembly week later this month, and occasionally at days away on visits,
but the role of chaplain won’t make too much of a difference to my day to day work. Be prepared
to hear about some of these stories in sermons through the year...!
At this time of year, following Easter, we hear stories of the early disciples making their way in
the world on their own, no longer with Jesus to guide or lead them, but entrusted with the work
of the kingdom using their own strength, faith and common sense. We know from their stories
that these can be daunting, yet fulfilling tasks, and important as they gain new followers and
bring people to faith through healing, prayer and kindness. I am sure you will join me in congrat-
ulating Russell on his forthcoming appointment and offering him our prayers and support – you
might like to spare a few words of prayer for his chaplains too, delighted to be asked, but a little
daunted at the same time!

As in previous years, enclosed in this month’s magazine, is a donation envelope for Christian Aid. Please put your donation in the envelope and complete your details for gift aid. Having this information allows the charity to claim an additional 25p in the £1.00. Although we all have to consider our own per-sonal expenses and donations to the church, I urge you to give generously. Please put the filled envelope in the offering plate. Late donations will be accepted up to and in-cluding the June Communion Sunday.

Fresh Start
How it all began: Fresh Start began in 1999 when a group of people from Edinburgh’s churches came together to
find a way of tackling homelessness. The question was – how to help? The group decided to ask
someone who was homeless what they could do for them. Through listening and learning about the
challenges faced by being homeless, the Starter Pack Project was launched. Fresh Start has con-
tinued to listen and learn from our clients to develop our Services.
What we do: We use three main themes to describe our Services – Provision of Goods; Social & Practical; and
Employability. The journey from homelessness to settling into a new tenancy can be a challenging
one. We take a rounded approach to supporting our clients by providing household goods, a deco-
rating service, and cooking and budgeting classes. There is an opportunity to work in our growing
spaces, that grow fruit and vegetables, and for those who are unemployed, our Training Initiative
offers valuable skills and experience to help get into the workplace.
Sponsored Walk 2016: Fresh Start’s annual sponsored Walk will take place on Friday 27th May. We warmly welcome any-
one who would like to take part in this scenic 8-mile walk. It begins at 10am from Jubilee Gardens
in Stockbridge, and the route takes us along the Water of Leith, round Colinton Dell and on to the
Union Canal towpath. Our Food Station at Harrison Place is the finishing point, where a well-
deserved lunch will be waiting for you.
There is no registration fee, but we do request all entrants raise a minimum of
£25. You can walk as part of a team, or with a companion, or on your own, it’s up to
you. It’s a fun day, a great walk, a fantastic route, all with a brilliant bunch of peo-
ple – what more could you ask for? And the bonus is – raising funds for Fresh
Start. If you can’t take part, but still want to be involved, you can sponsor the
Fresh Start staff team – we need your support, please help!
If you want further information, please call us on 0131 476 7741, or e-mail
[email protected] and we will send you a registration form.
Remember, if you have any items for FreshStart please phone 467 6868 or place items in
FreshStart Box at the back of the stage in the High St Hall.

Corstorphine Public Hall Rebuild Moving Forward
After many months of work, plans have now
been submitted to the Edinburgh City Council
containing the detailed proposals for a new and
much improved Corstorphine Public Hall which
will rise from the ashes of the old building. The
plans and architects’ drawings were developed
after consultation with those who have used
the hall for many years and with many others
who hope to be able to make good use of it in
the future.
It has taken time to get the insurance claim settled, to form a new charitable trust and to consult
with the many people and groups involved, to ensure that the architects produced plans which would
satisfy the needs of the entire community. This has resulted in a significant increase in floor space
within the building and an increased flexibility and capacity, which will allow more people to use dif-
ferent areas within the hall at the same time. One improvement will be to make the hall facilities
disabled friendly. This is not only a requirement today, but will also make life easier for the many,
such as older users, who may not be disabled, but will find the access and other facilities much easi-
er to use. One significant change from the old hall to the new one is the addition of a second floor
meeting room within the roof space. This will not only provide additional space for users, it will re-
duce the amount of money wasted heating the old large unused roof space in days gone by. Another
change will involve the main entrance, which will be contained in a new part of the building added to
the west side of the existing structure. The new main entrance will move from Kirk Loan to Saugh-
ton Road North, next to the bowling club entrance. The new entrance will be through wide double
doors and will provide easy access, with no steps, into a reception area and also to the lift, which will
provide access to the facilities on the first floor for those unable to use the stairs. Many of the existing facilities will be retained and improved and it is hoped to reinstate the caretaker’s flat on
the first floor.
Now that the insurance claim has been settled, enough funding is now in place to move forward and
rebuild the hall structure, which was well loved and used over the last hundred years. However, the
new larger hall with many improved facilities will require extra funding to provide a hall fit for the
future and the task now is to raise that funding.
There is a dedicated fundraising group working on this, but they will need everyone’s help. There are
many ways to help. Whatever you can do will be appreciated.

NEW ENJOY-A-BALL CLASSSES
STARTING
IN CORSTORPHINE
Classes starting on Monday 9th May in Kirk Loan Hall
Enjoy-a-Ball is a skills development and sports coaching programme for girls and boys aged between 4 & 9.
In the early years we introduce the children to fun, creative games designed to develop
their gross motor skills and as they get older we develop their sport-specific skills and con-
fidence in the 8 ball sports that we teach, which are Basketball, Baseball, Cricket, Volley-
ball, Football, Rugby, Tennis & Hockey. All lessons are taught in a caring, positive, fun-filled
environment and there are never more than 12 children in a class. Our objective is to make
children's first experiences in a sports coaching environment happy and memorable.
I will be starting new classes for the Pre School (ages 3½+) to Primary 2 age group in Cor-
storphine on Monday 9th May (classes between 1.30-5.30pm) and if you would be interested
in your child attending Enjoy-a-Ball lessons, please phone me on 07791 047 173.
Please also have a look at the Enjoy-a-Ball website at www.enjoy-a-ball.com for more de-tails on the coaching programme, or for more information on classes.
I look forward to hearing from you.

Corstorphine Fair - Church Open
The Church will be open to visitors on the day of the Corstorphine Fair from 10.00am until 4.00pm. We do need folk to 'meet and greet' visitors. If you can spare some time during the day, even just an hour or so, please get in touch with Donald Baird on 334 7591 or give your name to the duty officebearer on a Sunday morning and (if you prefer) tell us what time you are available. There is no need to have any knowledge about the church building (you are not acting as a tour guide) but your help would be very much appreciated. This is a chance for folk to see inside our beautiful building, even those who walk past every day. Hope you can help.
