a neW tRain is laUncHedChristian Guild has made railway history! Adding to the illustrious named trains of days gone by, such as the Brighton Belle and the Southern Belle, a train can now be boarded called the Willersley Belle. The new train ran for the first time from Duffield to Wirksworth on 11 June with the ‘Willersley Belle’ headboard proudly displayed. This historic event was part of the Trains through the Valleys special break, based at Willersley Castle. General Manager Kevin George said “I am very proud that Willersley Castle was the first hotel in the Christian Guild group to have embarked on a holiday of this kind and it was a real thrill to witness the train arriving at Wirksworth station and to see the enjoyment of our guests travelling on this special occasion.”Trains through the Valleys proved to be very popular and as a result we are repeating the break in the spring of 2013 from 16 – 21 June. So, if you would like to travel on the Willersley Belle and see the springtime countryside of Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Staffordshire roll by from the comfort of your railway carriage, give Derwent House a call.

MetHodist HeRitaGe toURs a sUccessThe fascinating history of the Methodist movement formed two fantastic tours in July and September, and there’s a chance for anyone who didn’t get to take part to join a tour in 2013.A coach took guests from Willersley Castle to its sister hotel Treloyhan Manor in July, where they visited a number of churches, towns and villages where John Wesley regularly preached. Meanwhile, in September, a tour was organised in central and northern England, where guests were able to follow in the footsteps of the Wesley brothers to see how and why Methodism began. The tour to St Ives and Treloyhan Manor will take place again next year. Full details are available in the brochure and online at www.christianguild.co.uk

bReaK offeRed cool WalKs in aUstRia!Have you ever walked on a glacier? Guests who joined us for our Austrian Walking Holiday in August this year got that rare chance. As well as walking in the mountains guests enjoyed mountain lakes, waterfalls and breathtaking views. This holiday was one of a number that we organised further afield this year. We know our guests enjoy our collection of hotels, but they want the same unique blend of fun and fellowship during other holidays. That’s why we go to great lengths to organise superb breaks around Europe and beyond. For 2013 we have organised holidays to Scotland, Jersey, Normandy, Greece and Italy.

cHRistian GUild Goes scillY!Sunday 6th May saw 40 people winging their way to Treloyhan Manor Hotel for an overnight stop on their way to the beautiful Isles of Scilly. For most of the group it was a venture into the unknown, as only one or two had visited the islands before. Here the leaders of the holiday share their experiences: “Monday morning dawned bright and clear for the helicopter flight from Penzance to St Mary’s – where, after settling into the hotel and waiting for a downpour to finish, most of us explored the ‘town’ and had a walk around ‘The Garrison’, an area of fortification just above the harbour. It was a busy week, with boat trips to three of the four inhabited ‘off-islands’ including Tresco and its famous sub-tropical gardens, St. Agnes (with an option to visit the bird sanctuary of Annet to see the puffins) and St. Martins (including the Eastern Isles to see the seals). The fourth day was spent exploring the nature trails and headlands of St Mary’s – the main island. Walks were arranged and led by the hosts, and directions were given to the best crab sandwiches and cream teas! On the Tuesday evening, the local naturalist, Will Wagstaff, came to the hotel with a slide show of the island’s flora and fauna; and on the Friday evening, some of the group cheered the locals in the Gig Race.We were made very welcome by the hotel and the local Methodist Church, who allowed us to use the chapel for evening prayers, and each evening members of the local congregation joined us for fellowship – even washing up the communion glasses after our final service.

The end came all too quickly and, in a blaze of Scilly sunshine, we waved goodbye on Saturday afternoon to the white beaches and aquamarine seas (is this really part of Britian?!), as we headed back to Treloyhan and then home.As leaders, it was a joy and a privilege to have the opportunity to share our love of these islands and we trust we were able to give people a ‘taste of Scilly’. There’s so much more to do and see! Thanks to all who made it such a special week!”
