Christian Visitor Weekly Newsletter Volume 71 ~ Issue 40 October 2, 2018 Office Hours: Monday ~ Thursday [8:00 a.m. ~ 4:30 p.m.] Office Phone: 785-448-3452 Website: www.fccgarnett.org The Power of Prayer Luke 5:16 says, Jesus often went out to pray. Max Lucado said, “When God tells us to pray, we should pray!” When Gods people pray, stuff happens! The Purpose of Prayer (Read Matthew 6:9) 1. Adoration- Holy is your name (Worshiping Him) 2. Mission- Your kingdom come and your will be done 3. Submission- Your will be done 4. Provision- Give us this day our daily bread 5. Confession- Forgive us as we have forgiven 6. Protection- Deliver us from the evil one How often do you think the average Christian prays each day? Statistics say that the average Christian prays about 5 minutes a day! How would you feel if your best friend made an effort to talk to you for five minutes a day and then wanted nothing to do with you for the other 23 hrs and 55 min? The Practice of Prayer-When should we pray? Psalm 77:2 Prayer was done at night 1 Thessalonians 5:17 We are told to pray all the time. The best practice is to dedicate a time that will work best for you and stay consistent! Flash prayers- Nehemiah 2:4- A great king told Nehemiah he could have anything and Nehemiah had only a short moment to say a prayer and answer the king. It is a great thing to say flash prayers to God, but it is very important to have a daily time of prayer where you go before the heart of God and really get into the nitty gritty depths of worship to God. Where should we pray? Moses prayed EVERYWHERE God could hear him!!! Paul prayed ANYWHERE that God was!!! God sent the Holy Spirit so that we would have a way to communicate with God 24/7. Postures of Prayer Three preachers sat discussing the best positions for prayer while a telephone repairman worked nearby. "Kneeling is definitely best," claimed one. "No," "I get the best results standing with my hands outstretched to Heaven." "You're both wrong," the third insisted. "The most effective prayer position is lying prostrate, face down on the floor." The repairman could contain himself no longer. "Hey, fellas, "he interrupted, "the best prayin' I ever did was hangin' upside down from a telephone pole." Ephesians 3:14-Kneeling 1 Timothy 2:8-Lifting Holy hands in prayer 2 Samuel 12:16-Fasting and laying prone on the ground Luke 9:16-With eyes turned to Heaven Vocabulary of Prayer We need to Talk to God like we talk to our best friend! The same as in any relationship we must portray how we feel or the relationship is only one sided. If we are angry toward God, tell him and ask him for help getting over the problem. If we are happy we should tell Him why! God wants us to be open and real with him. You cheat yourself if you are not taking advantage of the great gift of Prayer. Be confident when you talk to God! He is the Creator of the whole Universe but He made the first move and said that He wants you to talk to him so if you can’t think of anything to say ask him for something to say. Methods of Prayer (These are practical suggestions) In the car, out loud, in the woods, by writing letters, in a restaurant, while mowing the lawn, in an e-mail, pray scripture or in groups. Use things to remind you to pray. Picture of Jesus, jewelry, a hat, preferably something you will see a lot. You can pray to God in any pure way that you can think of. God likes to see us use the talents he gave us to be creative. So be creative! 1 John 2:6 Says that Christians are to live as Jesus lived and Jesus Prayed!

Light the Night is almost here!! It is that season we ask for an

abundance of candy for Halloween once again! We are in need of

people willing to decorate their trunk and hand out candy! We are

also in need of about 350 pounds of candy. We are in even greater

need of people to be in prayer for this special outreach. Many

students and their families have been connected to our church over

the years because they connected with a friend or family member

at Light the Night. Will you please prayerfully consider supporting

this valuable ministry this month? Thanks, Education Team

Meet the Crafters

Shirley Modlin is one of our Christian Crafters.

She joined the group in 2007 and spends many

hours doing embroidery work for us. Pictured

are some examples of her work that you can buy

at the Christmas Craft Sale on December 1st at

the church. If you are interested in joining us or

know of someone who would like to join us

please contact Connie Meyer at 913-909-7164.

The Crafters meet on Thursday mornings from

10:00 to noon at the Annex.

Christian Crafters

The ladies at Christian Crafters are busy getting ready

for their Christmas Craft Sale. This year the sale will

be held on December 1st in the new addition of the

Church. We work hard making many handmade

items and sell them, then donate the profits back to

the church or other charitable organizations.

The Sale has been at Parkside in the past, but this

year we are partnering with the Mission Team for an

event to please all your senses.

The Crafters will have their items to sell, and the

Mission Team will be making homemade soup and

baked goods for you to eat there or take home that

day.

We will also be selling chances to win one of our two

newest quilts finished. Proceeds from the ticket sales

will go toward paying off the construction costs for the

addition on the church. There is a patriotic theme lap

quilt and a Queen/king size quilt as well. The large

quilt is 96 x 110 inches in size. These will be on

display in the new entry of the church soon, and you

can get tickets from any of the Crafters. Contact

Connie Meyer at 913-909-7164 if you are interested

in purchasing tickets for the quilts or if you

would like to join the crafters. They meet in the Annex

on Thursday’s from 10:00 a.m. until noon weekly. Queen/King quilt, 96 x 110 inches

Patriotic lap quilt, 60 x 70 inches
