During the holidays, Downtown Boise sets the stage for some of the most exciting events and gatherings that you won’t find anywhere else. Music, art, theater, food and drink, community events—the sights, sounds

and flavors of the season are all yours to savor right in the heart of our city. So bundle up, gather up your family and friends and treat yourself to some very special signature holiday events that happen only once a year during Christmas in the City.

Remember when you were a kid and your parents plugged in the just-

decorated Christmas tree for the very first time? If you oohed and aahhed then, just wait until Boise lights the enormous Women’s and Children’s Alliance Giving Tree during the Zions Bank Holiday Tree Lighting Celebra-tion, Saturday, Nov. 27, from 5-7 p.m. on the Grove Plaza. This event will surely get you in the holiday spirit. Gather on the Grove Plaza with your family, friends and the rest of Boise and enjoy the lighting of the communi-ty Christmas tree, live music, caroling, a candle-lighting ceremony, and food and beverages.

One of the most festive holiday happenings is the annual Winter Window Gallery Stroll, which begins on First Thursday, Dec. 2. Take a stroll downtown and you will see much more in the windows than just the latest fashions. For the fifth year, local artists are helping create holiday magic by decorating various downtown store windows with winter scenes, twinkling lights and beautiful holiday art.

Speaking of lifting spirits and cheer, the Boise Tuba Christmas will definitely add some “oom-pah” to your Christmas holidays. Head on downtown on Saturday, Dec. 4, and enjoy more than 60 tuba and baritone players from local high schools, Boise State and the community, who will serenade you with traditional Christmas carols. a Midnight Clear,” “Silver Bells,” “O Come All Ye Faithful,” “Silent Night” and more? The group will be on the Grove Plaza at 3:30 p.m. and in the State Capitol Rotunda at 4:30 p.m. It’s tubalicious.

The Boise Holiday Parade is always a spe-cial day for the whole family. This year, the parade will start at 9:45 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 27. Bundle up the kids and get there early to get a good seat along the route, which runs from 11th and Jef-ferson streets to Fourth and Bannock streets. Ring in the holidays with this year’s parade Grand Marshal, Ida-ho’s Teacher in Space Barbara Morgan.

Everyone can be a kid at the Old Boise N-Scale Model Railroaders dis-play in the Old Boise Pioneer Building, 106 N. Sixth St., in Mezzanine 1. This huge exhibit, complete with numer-ous towns, villages and trains, is free and open to the public every Saturday Nov. 27-Dec. 18 from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. And, even though he much prefers his sleigh and reindeer to a train, Santa Claus will be there to take free pictures with the kids and will rove the Old Boise Sixth and Main area, thanks to the gener-ous support of the Old Boise Merchants Association.

Music is such a large part of the holiday season, and the annual Hymns of Thanksgiv-ing offers an amazing musical experience for the whole family. For this concert, a community choir and orchestra of about 350 musicians have been brought together to perform songs and hymns that are sure to entertain and inspire. The concert is on Sunday, Nov. 21, and begins at 7:30 p.m. at Qwest Arena. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., seating is open and tickets are not

Amahl and the Night Visitors, Menotti’s classic holiday story of faith

and miracles, has been seen by more people than any other opera in history and is return-ing to Opera Idaho Sings Christmas! for a second consecutive year. The opera tells the story of a crippled boy who is able to walk during a visit by the Magi on their way to visit the birth site of Jesus. Boise mezzo-soprano Tiffany Calas will once again star as Amahl’s mother. Directed by Valerie Baugh-

It’s a wonderful Downtown Boise holiday tradition—children lining up and waiting patiently to tell Santa their Christmas wishes, believing with all their might that the Jolly Old Elf will deliver the goods on Christ-mas morning.

This year, Santa and his helpers will be visiting with kids at Plaza 121 in the Berryhill & Co. ballroom on Idaho Street across from DL Evans Bank. Stop by and see him every Saturday from Nov. 27 through Dec. 18 from 11 a.m.-4 p.m.; on First Thursday, Dec. 2, from 5-8 p.m.; and on Sunday, Dec. 19, from noon-4 p.m.

And, moms and dads, for a small donation, your child can have his or her photo taken with Mr. Claus, with proceeds benefitting the American Cancer Society. ACS “elves” will print out your photo right on the spot for you to take with you. Just think of what a cute Christmas card it would make!

ACS Executive Director Rick Carpenter said that the City Santa donations usually total about $2,800, and this helps fund research, education and other programs.

“Not only does this raise funds, but it is also one of the most fun things we do all year,” Carpenter said. “The kids are great to work with, and they are either really overjoyed or scared to be with Santa. Often we shoot photos of the same kids year after year, and it’s fun to watch them grow up.”

This year, DL Evans Bank is the proud sponsor of City Santa. “We are very excited to be a part of the Christmas in the City festivities, and

especially being able to bring Santa to downtown Boise again this year,” said Joey Perry, vice president of private banking.

Giving Tree, Empty Bowls Help to Make a Big Difference

For most of us, Christmas time means presents, food, family and fun. But along with all the festivities and deco-rations, Christmas also is about giving to others, granting wishes and spreading hope to those in our community who need our support. Each year there are two events in particular that embody our community’s giving spirit: The Giving Tree to benefit the Women’s and Children’s Alli-ance and the Idaho Food Bank Empty Bowls event.

The magnificent Giving Tree stands at the center of the Grove Plaza and twinkles with more than 3,500 lights. Tied to the boughs of the tree are 2,000 colorful gift tags that describe simple items that could make a world of difference for the women and children who seek help from WCA.

You are invited to take a tag from the Giving Tree, purchase the requested gifts and deliver the new, un-wrapped gift to the WCA, 720 W. Washington St., between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, or any Zions Bank listed below. WCA provides safety, shelter, healing and support to women and their children escaping the trauma of domestic violence and abuse. Your donation will provide hope and put a smile on the faces of hundreds of moms and their children on Christmas Day.

“The importance of the Giving Tree is that the items donated so generously by the community are used by the families in our shelter, not only during the holidays, but throughout the entire year to come,” said Katherine Johnson, WCA community relations manager. “We are ex-tremely grateful to be the beneficiary of such an important annual event.”
