Saying GoodbyeIt is with great sadness that we share the news of the passing on Monday morning of Prof. Susan L. Callahan, associate professor of mathematics. Prof. Callahan joined the Cottey faculty in 1980 and served the College for 35 years as a distinguished faculty member and colleague. Susan was born and raised in Kansas City, and she received her B.S. and M.S. from Missouri University of Science and Technology (formerly the University of Missouri-Rolla).
Prof. Callahan was a dedicated and accomplished educator. She received the Missouri Governor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching in 2002, and was designated an Honorary Alumna by the Cottey College Alumnae Association during Founder’s Day in 2015. Her high-quality instruction earned her Cottey’s Master Educator Award in 1996. Susan’s colleagues appreciated the diligence and careful consideration she brought to her professional work. She was recently elected by the faculty as the 2015-2017 Blanche Hinman Dow Honored Speaker. She served as chair of the faculty and the Rank and Tenure Committee, chair of the Math and Science Division, and coordinator of the math department. Susan was an active member of the Cottey community, most notably through playing and performing in the Cottey wind ensemble for over 30 years.
The Cottey community and all friends of Prof. Callahan will be invited to attend a memorial service on the Cottey campus. Details about the service will be released when they are available. Contributions in Susan’s memory can be made to the Susan L. Callahan Mathematics Scholarship at Cottey College.
CondolencesIt is with sympathy that we notify the campus community of the passing of Traci Borders’ mother-in-law, Margaret E. Borders. Ms. Borders passed away on Saturday, April 11. Visitation was held on Friday, April 17, with a service following at the Bland-Hackleman Funeral Home in El Dorado Springs, Missouri. Please join us in offering Traci and her family our condolences.
It is also with sympathy that we notify the campus community of the passing of Dr. Carmen Bourbon’s mother, Felicia Robles, Thursday morning at her home in Puerto Rico. Service arrangements have not been released yet. Please join us in offering Carmen and her family our condolences.
Faculty NewsDr. Kathryn Pivak, associate professor of English, presented part of her sabbatical research, a paper entitled “Imagining the Front: Mary Roberts Rinehart and the First World War,” at the annual conference of the College English Association, which was held in Indianapolis from March 26-28, 2015. She also attended presentations on composition, Shakespeare, and Victorian literature.
Spiritual Life & DiversityThe Cottey drum circle went to perform at Bristol Manor on Friday, April 17. The group had an opportunity to share their drumming skills with the seniors. They first entertained the residents while having dinner and later involved them in drumming during the social time. This was a very powerful experience for our students. The group receives various invitations from our local community including our local churches.
The Office of Spiritual Life and Campus Diversity has also been busy preparing for the arrival of filmmaker Cynthia Lukas, and her film screenings coming up this week (see page two). In addition, in an effort to continue educating our community about diversity and inclusion, they’ve posted educational materials regarding Child Abuse Prevention Awareness Month in the Library display cabinet. The interfaith group also had an awareness program in Raney Dining Room on Tuesday, April 21, to support Child Abuse Prevention Month as well as educate the community about diversity and inclusion.
Seven students in Dr. Kanji Watanabe’s class, “Poverty and Inequality” visited Rich Hill, Missouri, in order to meet with Mr. Randy Bell and his daughter, Kate, on Tuesday, April 21. He explained the history of the town and took the group to the main part of it. The group discussed the film Rich Hill and tried to understand poverty and inequality there, acknowledging positive and negative realities they could see in the town.
Class Field Trip
Student VolunteeringOn Saturday, April 18, ten Cottey students volunteered their efforts participating in activities with the residents at Moore-Few Care Center and Medicalodge. Activities ranged from playing games such as Rack-O, Skip Bo, Dog-O-Poly, and Matching, as well as conversing with the residents. Once again, the residents at both facilities expressed their gratitude, and how much they appreciate seeing new faces, as well as how much they enjoy it when Cottey students came to visit. Students Chaymaa Bakhalek and Abbey Johnson planned and coordinated the volunteer events. Renee Hampton and Reverend Erica Sigauke served as staff members for the events. Student volunteers included Chaymaa Bakhalek, Abbey Johnson, Maria Ceballos, Ty’Cember Jones, Kalina Jurkowski, Angela Shauerte, Lori Perez, Namgay Zam, Emily Cortes, and Alison Sowka.
