THANK YOU DONORS! OUR DONOR HONOR ROLL

Dear CBA Family,

At Christian Brothers Academy, we celebrate the history of our school and prepare for its future. During our Capital Campaign, these two perspectives aligned and this summer, we see it come to life. The physical centerpiece of Our Defining Moment – a new state of the art music room, an engineering lab, and new classrooms for our fifth and sixth grades – is near completion. We watched this project grow from visions and plans, to

shovels in dirt, to a finished product to walk through. We are excited about our students learning and growing in an unrivaled educational space.

Our vision for Christian Brothers Academy is academic excellence in a faith-filled environment. We have committed resources to the facilities, the faculty, the curriculum, and the student activities to ensure that we provide the transformative experiences that are central to Lasallian Education. Advancing innovations in teaching, technology and scholarship, and teaching based on the vision of Saint John Baptist de La Salle has been essential to the Brothers’ mission for more than three centuries and to CBA’s mission since 1859.

The success our school is experiencing is a direct result of the contributions of our faculty, alumni, students, and parents. This

community believes in our Catholic, Lasallian mission and support it in many ways. Their commitment is an acknowledgement that the people who are close to CBA truly believe in the education our students receive and the desire to see CBA accelerate into the future.

We enthusiastically welcome more than 120 new students, including 20 fifth graders, to CBA this September. This school year will be exciting and future classes of Brothers will build upon this success and our history and traditions. I wish you a wonderful summer and thank you for supporting Christian Brothers Academy.

St. John Baptist de La Salle, Pray for us. Live Jesus in our hearts, forever!

Sincerely,

Dr. James SchlegelHead of School

YOUNG ENGINEER WITH BIG DREAMSWill Byron ’16 is interested in engineering, biomechanics, and the medical field. He will attend RIT where he will major in biomedical engineering. Will chose this career field when he conducted research and wrote a report on prosthetics

with sensory feedback for AP biology.

After the project was completed, Will did independent research on schematics for building prosthetic hands. He discovered a website called E-Nable that sold hand assembly kits, and ordered one. Will met with STEM teacher, Megan Hoffman, and she gave him use of CBA’s 3D printer to assemble the hand. Will built two hands: one to leave at CBA and one to bring to RIT so he can enhance the design and function. The hand he built would enable a person to have mobility above the wrist.

Will would also like to establish a Prosthetics Club at CBA and help out when he is home from college. He says that a hand is one of the most difficult and most expensive items to build. He has also volunteered through the E-Nable website to build hands for those in need.

At RIT, Will would like to build a hand and enhance it with sensory modification.

Ultimately, Will would like to work with veterans to equip them with state-of-the-art prosthetic devices. He says he may enlist after college to help offset the cost of attending medical school to specialize in building prosthetics.

RAIMO ’16 RECOGNIZED FOR ACADEMIC EXCELLENCEElliott Raimo ’16 was chosen for the Times Union Scholars’ Recognition Program, a program that honors outstanding scholastic achievement in members of the Class of 2016. Elliott also represented CBA at the Suburban Scholastic

Council Leadership Awards ceremony and was named Time Warner Cable News Scholar Athlete of the Week. Elliott will attend Division I George Washington University, where he will major in chemistry and play baseball.

On Wednesday, March 30, CBA broke ground on a $1.5 million arts and sciences wing, which will be completed this September. At the groundbreaking ceremony, Dr. James Schlegel announced that CBA will add a fifth grade for the 2016-2017 school year.

“For years, we have educated boys in grades 6 through 12, and our parents have urged us to open up to a wider range of students. This year, the interest has been overwhelming for this particular group of students,” says Dr. Schlegel.

The new building addition is part of Our Defining Moment, CBA’s $5.2 million campaign. Thank you to Bishop Scharfenberger, Congressman Paul Tonko, Colonie Town Supervisor Paula Mahan, Albany County Executive Dan McCoy, Assemblyman Phil Steck, J. CBA GROUND- BREAKING CEREMONY

OUR DEFINING MOMENT

MEET CBA’S “NEW WING” MAN

Joe Ozimek ‘65 made a grand gesture by dedicating a gift to CBA in the name of his parents. CBA’s new wing will be named “The Mary and Michael Ozimek Arts & Science Wing” as a tribute to his parents who sacrificed to give him the best education to help him achieve his dream…working in the aeronautical industry. Joe’s gift has afforded CBA the opportunity to build a new wing to house our Music Suite and add four classrooms for our new 5th grade and current 6th grade students. The wing will be completed by the start of the 2016 school year and a ribbon cutting ceremony will take place on Tuesday, September 27th.

OUR DEFINING MOMENT

We have graduated another class of incredible young men. In September, we will welcome 500 students back to campus. What an extraordinary opportunity our families give us to educate their sons. But why are we leaping and throwing our hands in the air? Our effort to grow the school’s future has been captured in Our Defining Moment, a $5.2 million investment into CBA. Our funding priorities have been outlined, and for nearly two years, we have been committed to raising the money to fulfill these funding priorities. Tremendous progress has been made and we are still gaining momentum.

We’ve raised $3.7 million, and we need your help to raise the remaining $1.5 million!

Our exceptional music programs consist of nearly 150 students.

For the last six years, CBA has maintained a balanced budget.

This fall, for the first time, we will open a 5th grade.

The 7,000 sq. ft. new addition will open Fall 2016.

Greetings and Happy Summer,

CBA has once again had an excellent year on many fronts. Our students are doing well academically and in their extra-curricular programs. Enrollment increased again for the eighth year in a row and the school finished with a small operating surplus for the sixth year in a row. This surplus will be re-invested back into the school to ensure that our students have the environment and

tools to compete in a very competitive academic community. There was also continued investment in carrying out the mission of the Christian Brothers by adding an additional theology teacher and purchasing new theology class materials.

The most exciting news is the progress of our Capital Campaign. Our goal for the three year campaign is $5.2 million and after this first year we have reached seventy percent completion by raising $3.7 million. This has allowed CBA to move forward on the construction of the new Arts and Science wing. Construction

started in the spring and the building will be completed by the end of August. I hope everyone has the opportunity to see this great addition to CBA. I know our students will benefit from the state-of-art music performance and practice rooms and the new STEM engineering lab. This new wing will also house the first fifth grade class in CBA’s history.

There still are several important capital projects to be completed which are part of the Campaign. Next year CBA will completely update the physics and earth science labs and the track in the stadium will hopefully be redone this year. To do these projects, we need to complete the Capital Campaign. I thank everyone who has participated so far and I encourage everyone who has not yet made a pledge to consider doing so. This Campaign is something that the entire CBA community can take pride in for many years to come.

I wish everyone a safe and enjoyable summer.

Respectfully,

Christopher Scaringe ’82Chairman of the Board of Trustees

On Wednesday, June 8, family, faculty, and friends gathered in celebration of our Brother, Dylan. The 6th grade class and Parents’ Association kindly donated a Bradford Pear Tree and stone reading bench, which resides on campus where the middle school students gather after school. Dylan’s family and friends established the Dylan F. Valentine Memorial Scholarship in honor of the special memories and friends he made at CBA.

Christian Brothers Academy lost a member of its family this past fall. Dylan Valentine, a fun-loving 6th grader passed away on February 24. Dylan was a member of the CBA band where he played trombone. He also loved to bike and skateboard.
