This research intends…

To study a teaching method of designing an interactive storytelling game for art design students

To adopt mind mapping authoring tool to help students develop their concept map.

To accomplish a deep learning and suceed to create a game by using a teaching strategy of “learning by doing”.

The teacher provides students with…

Project based learning to design a 3D/2D interactive storytelling game.

Learning to integrate designing knowledge and skills, and to think logically in programming.

Concept map authoring tool to guide students to create a script of the game

Thinking process includes…

Game design/decision making aboutgame typedevelopment toolsartistic stylegame story script

ProgrammingCombining the logic of Giro game (board game as

Monopoly) and RPG-puzzle game

We carry out this program by

• Graduate Project:• Project based learning• Students work as a team to create a production before graduate• The progress is supervised by advisor and graded by the entire

department faculties twice a semester• This project has to be accomplished and displayed in the graduate

exhibition and the Young Designers Exhibition held in Taipei.• Concept map:

• To assist students to organize knowledge and information.• To increase structural awareness of interleaved information.• To help students assess the structure of facts.• To promote storytelling abilities.

(This storytelling game is plotted as non-linear game. It is achieved by using random chosen poker cards, which is decided by the players and giving flexibility )

Developing process…

Game Story is based on: historical facts (The notorious Jack the Ripper

from London)emotional factors, the player feel and like to solve

this unsolved mystery by playing an interactive storytelling game.

Game Structure is established by a major stage and four events (tool shop, free zone, mini games, and bar)

Mandatory Rules

Graduate project progresses as three consecutive semester courses.

Students are required: to finish one thirds of the project in the first semester to complete the whole project in the second semesterto display their projects in the graduate exhibition and

Young Designers Exhibition

Evaluation

The grades are divided as project (60% contributed by all faculties)participation (20% contributed by each group advisor) exhibition preparation (collaborative works distributed to

each student, 20% contributed by the elected director of graduate project).

Results and Discussions

This deep learning strategy is: • To be designed as project based learning• To be emphasized on the thinking process• To be accomplished by collaborative learning• To assessed students’ learning by doing:

They finish major part of the project. The project demonstrates the integraty They present and display their project in graduate exhibition and

the Young Designers Exhibition (Competition) held in Taipei.
