I believe that where we are in a congregaon in five years or ten years is dependent upon the work and atudes we have today. I believe that it is crucial for us as a congregaon to be looking ahead – always. We want to be a model for our young- er members and those new to our congregaon and those new to faith. We want to be a model of integrity, of acon, of prayer, and of being intenonal about everything that we do. I believe that all we do should be connected in some way to spiritual growth, service to others, and seeking opportunity to share the good news (not just church) with others. God’s people have a history of losing focus. Somemes it is intenonal pursuit of other gods. Some- mes it is not paying aenon to the important things. Somemes – as we discussed last week – it is failing to pass on what is important to the next generaon. Where we spend our resources – goods, me, and money – will be the things that train our children much more than what we say. Losing focus on God will always end badly for God’s people. But we serve a God who is forgiving and gracious and as long as we draw breath we have hope for our future. In Jeremiah, even as capves were gathered at Ramah, a transit point for capves ready to be deported in chains, he gives a message of hope to the exiles. In Mahew the text from Jeremiah 31:18 is used to draw a contrast between the violent and murderous hold on power that Herod had with the coming peaceable kingdom of God through Christ. I have stated before one of the first things I noced about this church building was the intenon and view to the future that is represented in the way our auditorium is built. It was built with at least two things in mind that are obvious only by looking – being responsible with resources and growing too large for this space. I believe that many are sll commied to those goals. For those who need to repent of living openly opposed to God, there is hope for your future. For those who have been treading water in your faith, there is hope for your future. For us as a congregaon, there is hope for our future. We must look ahead, pray, plan, parcipate, and work together – “all for one and one for all.”

CHURCH OF CHRIST

There Is Hope for Your Future

(Jeremiah 31:10-22)

Nothing stays the same and nothing stands still. There is growth and change all around us. Our minds

and our bodies change over time, some parts of us grow stronger and other parts grow weaker. Circumstanc-

es change, sometimes gradually and other times suddenly. Life is movement and change. Life is full of

obstacles and challenge. With our eyes fixed on Jesus and our minds filled with hope, our life on earth is a

beautiful thing lived in the kingdom of God. Life moves – either toward God or away from Him.

I spend time thinking about the future; specifically about the future of the church, and more

specifically about the future of the congregation here at Pennyrile. I believe that where we are in a

congregation in five years or ten years is dependent upon the work and attitudes we have today. I believe

that it is crucial for us as a congregation to be looking ahead – always. We want to be a model for our young-

er members and those new to our congregation and those new to faith. We want to be a model of integrity,

of action, of prayer, and of being intentional about everything that we do. I believe that all we do should be

connected in some way to spiritual growth, service to others, and seeking opportunity to share the good

news (not just church) with others.

God’s people have a history of losing focus. Sometimes it is intentional pursuit of other gods. Some-

times it is not paying attention to the important things. Sometimes – as we discussed last week – it is failing

to pass on what is important to the next generation. Where we spend our resources – goods, time, and

money – will be the things that train our children much more than what we say.

Losing focus on God will always end badly for God’s people. But we serve a God who is forgiving and

gracious and as long as we draw breath we have hope for our future. In Jeremiah, even as captives were

gathered at Ramah, a transit point for captives ready to be deported in chains, he gives a message of hope to

the exiles. In Matthew the text from Jeremiah 31:18 is used to draw a contrast between the violent and

murderous hold on power that Herod had with the coming peaceable kingdom of God through Christ.

I have stated before one of the first things I noticed about this church building was the intention and

view to the future that is represented in the way our auditorium is built. It was built with at least two things

in mind that are obvious only by looking – being responsible with resources and growing too large for this

space. I believe that many are still committed to those goals. For those who need to repent of living openly

opposed to God, there is hope for your future. For those who have been treading water in your faith, there is

hope for your future. For us as a congregation, there is hope for our future. We must look ahead, pray, plan,

participate, and work together – “all for one and one for all.”

participate, though you are not required to do so. *Giving– We are challenged to be good stewards of God’s blessings by supporting the various ministries of the church through a weekly collection that is taken during our worship time. You are welcome to give, but
