Pastor’s Corner

The legendary Lost Dutchman Gold Mine is said to be hidden in the Superstition Mountains near Apache Junction, Arizona. The mine got its name in the 1870s, when a body was discovered in the desert along with saddlebags filled with gold. One writer estimates that as many as 8,000 seekers still try to find the gold each year. Eight hundred years before Jesus, Isaiah proclaimed that he brought glad tidings, healing and liberty. And like hidden gold, that 800-year-old prophecy waited to be discovered. No one could find it. In today’s Gospel, the glittering Jesus an-nounces that he is the fulfillment and the diadem of gladness. He brings the golden treasure of eternal life. A couple of parishioners have asked me what is the meaning of “Ordinary Time.” It might be good for all of us to revisit the meaning of this season in the church liturgical calen-dar. Ordinary Time encompasses two different periods in the Catholic Church's liturgical year. Ordinary Time begins on the Monday after the first Sunday after January 6 (the Feast of the Epiphany) and runs until Ash Wednesday. Both Lent and the Easter season fall outside of Ordinary Time, which resumes again on the Monday after Pentecost Sunday and runs until the First Sunday in Advent (the start of the new liturgical year). Because Ordinary Time refers to the period of the Catholic Church's liturgical year that fall outside of the major seasons (Advent, Christmas, Lent, and Easter), and because of the con-notations of the term "ordinary" in English, many people think Ordinary Time refers to the parts of the Church year that are unimportant. But nothing could be further from the truth. Ordi-nary Time is called "ordinary" because the weeks are numbered. The Latin word ordinalis, which refers to numbers in a series, stems from the Latin word ordo, from which we get the English word order. Thus, Ordinary Time is in fact the ordered life of the Church---- the period in which we live our lives neither in feasting (as in the Christmas and Easter seasons) or in more severe penance (as in Advent and Lent), but in watchfulness and expectation of the Second Coming of Christ. The part of Ordi-nary time that we are presently celebrating will conclude with the beginning of Lent which commences with the celebration of Ash Wednesday on February 13th. We are blessed with a lot of talented and gifted parish-ioners in our parish. Someof those talents, just at the right time, surface and are offered at just the right moment which serve to better our community. I would like to thank parishioner David Stimmel for his artistic talents. While the statues of Mary and Joseph where on “hiatus” during the Christmas Season they were loving repaired, restored and repainted with great care and love. Thank you David for sharing your gifts with our parish. We can now better appreciate these images of these members of the Holy Family that we find here in our church. If you have driven by our school on weekday mornings you might have noticed a police car parked outside for awhile. This is a daily “check-in” service that is being provided by the LAPD to all public and private schools in the wake of the Con-necticut massacre. Let us all be more vigilant in the hopes of avoiding anything that could harm our children and anyone in our neighborhoods.

La Esquina del Párroco Se dice que el legendario Lost Dutchman de la Mina de Oro se oculta en las montañas cerca de Apalache Junction en Arizona. A la mina se le dio este nombre en la década de 1870, cuando un cuerpo fue descubierto en el desierto con unas alfor-jas llenas de oro. Un escritor estima que cada ano unas 8.000 personas siguen intentando encontrar el oro. Ochocientos años antes de Jesucristo, Isaías proclamo que traje buenas noticias, la curación y libertas. Y como el oro oculto esa profecía de 800 años espero para ser descubierta. Nadie pudo encontrarla. En el Evangelio de hoy, el Jesús que brilla anuncia que él es el cumplimiento y la diadema de júbilo. El trae el oro, tesoro de la vida eterna. Un par de feligreses me han preguntado ¿Cuál en el significado del “Tiempo Ordinario”?. Sería bueno para todos nosotros volver al significado del Calendario Litúrgico de la Iglesia. “Tiempo Ordinario” abarca dos periodos diferentes en el Ano Litúrgico de la Iglesia Católica. El Tiempo Ordinario co-mienza el lunes después del primer domingo después del 6 de enero (fiesta de la Epifanía) y se prolonga hasta el Miércoles de Ceniza. La temporada de Cuaresma y Pascua caen afuera del Tiempo ordinario, que se reanuda el lunes después del Domingo de Pentecostés hasta el primer día de Adviento (el comienzo del nuevo Ano Litúrgico). Porque el Tiempo ordinario se refiere al periodo al periodo del año Litúrgico de la Iglesia Católica que queda afuera de las estaciones principales (Adviento, Navidad, Cuaresma y Pascua) t porque las connotaciones del término “ordinario” en inglés, muchas personas piensan que el termino ordinario se refiere a las partes del ano eclesial que no son im-portantes. Pero está lejos de la verdad. Tiempo ordinario es lla-mado “ordinario”, porque las semanas son numeradas. La pala-bra latina ordinales, que se refiere a los números en serie, pro-viene de la palabra latina ordo de donde recibimos la palabra en ingles orden. Por lo tanto, de hecho tiempo ordinario es la vida ordenada de la iglesia. El periodo en que vivimos nuestras vidas ni en banquete (como Navidad y Semana Santa) o en penitencia 9como la Temporada de Adviento y Cuaresma), pero en vigilia y expectativa de la segunda venida de Cristo. La parte de tiempo ordinario que estamos celebrando actualmente concluirá con el comienzo de la Cuaresma que comienza con la celebración del Miércoles de Ceniza el 13 de febrero. Nuestra parroquia ha sido bendecida con feligreses que tienen mucho talento. Algunos de estos talentos en el momento oportuno salen a la superficie para ayudar a nuestra comunidad. Quiero dar las gracias a David Stimmel por su talento artístico y por compartirlos con nuestra parroquia. Durante la temporada de Navidad, con mucho cuidado y amor, el reparo y restauro las estatuas de María y José. Muchas gracias David por compartir sus dones con nuestra parroquia. Ahora podemos apreciar mejor estas imágenes de estos miembros de la Sagrada Familia. Si usted ha pasado entre semana por nuestra escuela habrá notado un coche de policía estacionado afuera. Este es un servicio diario proporcionado por la policía al público en general y a alas escuela privadas a raíz de la masacre de Connecticut. Todos tene-mos que ser más vigilantes con la esperanza de evitar cualquier cosa que podría dañar a nuestros hijos y a nadie en nuestro vecindario.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITIONS Saturday’s feast of the Presentation is a day for the blessing of candles. Why does liturgy require candles? In the first years of the church, worship was often at night, and candles and torches were carried from place to place within the worship space as needed. Candles were also a mark of festivity and hospitality when people gathered for prayer in homes, and later on in large buildings with thick walls and dark corners. But even after gaslight and electricity, candles were kept. Part of the reason has to do with the warm, clean light of a candle’s flame. Candles are a good sign of the partnership of God and creation: wax made by bees, gathered and fashioned by human hands into something beautiful and useful. In order for the light to shine, the candle surrenders itself, almost as if it is pouring itself out so that the light can flood into the world. The candle of baptism, placed into our hands, and car-ried again and again, speaks silently of that same wisdom. If you would save your life, you must lose it. You must pour your life out like Christ so that you may be filled with the light of his love.

Children’s Liturgy and Early Childhood St. Mark Parish is pleased to offer two opportunities during our 9am Mass to help our children better understand and pray the Liturgy. Early Childhood for children who are 4, 5 or in kindergarten offers an experiential approach to God’s love and his presence in community. Children’s Liturgy invites children in grades 1-6 to read, study and pray the Readings of the Mass together. Parents are always welcome to observe or to volunteer. Protect your children from accidental poisoning From fertilizer to antifreeze and medicines to makeup, poi-sonous items show up throughout our homes. By following some common-sense guidelines regarding these items, parents can help prevent kids ingesting poisonous substances by acci-dent. For instance, Store all medications — prescription and nonprescription — in a locked cabinet, far from kids’ reach. Even items that seem harmless, such as mouthwash, can be extremely dangerous if ingested in large quantities by chil-dren. Just because cabinets are up high doesn't mean kids can’t get their hands on what’s in them — they’ll climb up (using the toilet and countertops) to get to items in the medi-cine cabinet.
