  • IMMACULATE HEART OF MARY SEPTEMBER 22, 2019

From the Pastor’s Desk “Tony, could you learn me how to read?” I had given up telling Efrain that my name was Tom, not Tony. I met Efrain many years ago at the Holy Name Centre for Homeless Men which used to be on the corner of Bleecker & Elizabeth Street. Now it is the beautifully renovated Sheen Center which hosts plays, discussions and all sorts of events sponsored by the Archdiocese of New York. The Director of the Holy Name Centre for many years was Monsignor John Ahern, one of the finest priests I ever met. He was no nonsense. In fact, while keeping the order of a line of homeless men that waited outside the cen-tre to take a shower, he would sometimes have to invite troublemakers to come back another day. I wit-nessed this first hand as I was outside one morning on Bleecker Street when one of the men decided to threaten Msgr. Ahern by saying that he would beat him and knock him out. Unphased, Msgr. looked him in the eye and said, “Take your best shot!” The fellow decided to come back the next day and make no more trouble.

One of the reasons that the Centre was so efficient in their outreach to the homeless was because Msgr. Ahern would hire former residents who were in recovery from their drug and alcohol addiction. They created an empathetic and respectful staff to newcomers who would wind up at the door looking for shelter, a shower, food, or anything at all that the Centre could offer. I had the privilege of working there during the summers and winters of a few of my seminary years. Most of the “guests” were coming from prison and detox centers where they would come to the Centre for re-entry and a second (third, etc.) chance. I met doctors, lawyers, teachers and so many more men dealing with the effects of their life long addictions. I learned so much from them while sitting with them at meals as they told their stories and put such a human face on people with serious addictions to drugs and alcohol.

Efrain was one of the most recent hires at the Centre. He was about 25 and took a liking to me for some reason or other. Maybe it was because I simply talked to him throughout the day as he worked in the clothing collection room. He was a recovering addict like the majority on staff. One day he asked where I was going and I told him that I was going to church for Mass. He asked to come along as it was his lunch break. He had never been to church before and found it all fascinating. He then came with me almost every day. In any event, over time he asked, as I mentioned above, for me to teach him how to read. He was a quick learner and obviously very intelligent. All was smooth sailing until I got a phone call one night from him to tell me that he had “picked up!” He started using crack again (these were the late 80’s). Msgr. Ahern was away on vacation & shockingly put me in charge. Efrain told me he was com-ing over. I told him to come back the next day. He showed up anyway and was let in by a co-worker who didn’t know what happened. He demanded to see “Tony”. I remember praying a few memorare’s as I headed downstairs. Specifically he wanted to get into the clothing room and supply room which I would-n’t let him because of some of the tools laying around that could have been dangerous, not only at the moment but also if he took them out into the street. I stood my ground, as nervous as I was. He lunged at me with his fist & instead of punching me out, he put a hole in the wall. To make a long story short, he came back the next day & we got him help in a detox center. I asked him why he didn’t punch me the night before, he said, “because you taught me how to read!” Boy, was I grateful! I never heard from him again & often wonder where he is today or what he is doing, or worse, what happened to him, this intel-ligent young man eager to learn the A, B, C’s.

My friends, September is Recovery Month, which raises awareness and understanding of mental and substance use disorders & celebrates the people who recover. The 2019 theme is Join the Voices for Recovery: Together We Are Stronger. Check out the website called “Recovery Month.” It is fantastic. If I or the parish of IHM can be of any help to anyone suffering from mental and substance abuse disorders, give us a call. Let us pray for one another

    September 2019

Month of the Seven Sorrows of Mary

    Dear Friends in the Lord:

Whenever I receive letters from parishioners, no letter cheers me more than when I

read how much the faithful love their priests. And as you know, most were educated and

formed at our own seminary, St. Joseph’s, Dunwoodie.

Our Seminarians are not only the future shepherds of our flock, but they are also spiritual guides and

leaders in our communities. We must be sure that they are as well prepared as possible to serve the Church

in New York. And Dunwoodie is that place of formation and has been for the past 122 years. Thousands of

holy, dedicated and faithful priests have been ordained over these years. It is nationally renowned, held in

the highest regard by bishops from around the country. Each year, other dioceses and religious orders send

their candidate to our priestly formation program.

As I write to you today, I ask you to consider, in your own prayer, a sacrificial gift to the Annual Semi-

nary Appeal. It will be collected on the weekend of September 28-29, 2019. Your support will provide tui-

tion, room and board, academic training and spiritual formation for about 22 seminarians of the archdio-

cese. In a word, your support will help prepare young men who will inspire those letters of admiration that I

receive daily about so many of our great priests.

The priesthood is a life of sacrifice and service. As you know, we do not have as many men making

the commitment to serve as priests as we did years ago, and I am so grateful to those who accept the Lord’s

call. Please help me in providing for our seminarians who will hand on the life and traditions of the Church

as they embark on their training to become your priests. To learn more visit www.dunwoodie.edu.

With gratitude and prayerful best wishes, I am,

    Faithfully in Christ,

    +Timothy Michael Cardinal Dolan

BACK TO SCHOOL BBQ - SEPTEMBER 14 THANK YOU TO ALL FAMILIES THAT

    HELPED KICK-OFF THE SCHOOL YEAR!

Thank You From HOPE Community Services Inc.

    (Bread Table)

Dear Fr. Lynch, The People of IHM & The Bread Table Volunteers:

We are writing this letter to express our deepest thanks for your recent contribution to HOPE in the amount of $1,000.00.

This donation is very important to us. It en-ables us to continue in our mission to bring HOPE to the table and lives of our neigh-bors in need. HOPE is committed to feeding the most vulnerable residents of New Ro-chelle through our Soup Kitchen and Food Pantry. However, HOPE does more than of-fer emergency food services. We also pro-vide housing programs, citizenship classes, and school supplies, among other pro-grams. As we continue and expand our ser-vices to the community, we are acutely aware that we cannot do so without your support. Once again, on behalf of all of us, clients, staff and board of directors, thank you!
