THE CALM BEFORE THE STORM This seventh Sunday of Easter is somewhat like the proverbial “calm before the storm.” The Lord Jesus has ascended into heaven and Pentecost has not yet occurred. Rather than immediately taking up Jesus’ command to go out to all the nations, the disciples gather in the upper room “with some women, and Mary the mother of Jesus, and his brothers” (Acts 1:14). There they all devote themselves to prayer. The Gospel recounts the great prayer for the disciples that Jesus offered to his Father in heaven. If the words of Jesus while he was on earth finally began to sink in for the disciples, then gathering to pray was certainly the right choice, for the second reading lets us all know that to follow Christ means to have a share in his sufferings.

Dear Parishioners,
My brother priests, deacons and the Pastoral Staff join me in wishing you a happy and restful Memorial Day Weekend. For many people this is the unofficial beginning of summer but we don’t want to lose sight of the holiday’s purpose: the respectful remembrance of those who gave their lives in the service of our country. May they rest in peace. On this coming Saturday, June 3rd, Bishop Di Marzio will ordain the newest priests of our diocese at St. Joseph Co-Cathedral. The ordination liturgy will be televised on the NET channel 97. See program listing for time. The ordination, while a joyful event, is a reminder to all of us that the laws of supply and demand are not even. There are parishes being served by adjoining pastors because there are simply not enough “seasoned” priests to serve as pastors. The necessity of praying for more vocations to serve the church in our diocese is imperative. Please encourage good living young men and women to consider a lifetime of consecrated service to God and His people in the priesthood, permanent diaconate, and in the religious life of sisters and brothers. Replacing ageing priests, deacons, religious sisters and brothers is not the primary focus in my opin-ion. The focus is that those of us who have responded to the Lord’s invitation would do it all over again if given the choice. Thank you to those of you who have made a gift/pledge to the Annual Catholic Appeal. The latest results are: We have less than $30,00.00 to reach our goal. The more who give something, the closer we’ll be to the finish line. Thank you for your cooperation.
Let’s pray for each other, Msgr. Kevin B. Noone
