Advent is a four-week period that marks the beginning of the Christmas season. It is a time of spiritual preparation before the celebration of the birth of Christ. In the Roman Catho-lic tradition, it is also a time of penitence. The period of Advent involves reflection about what it meant for the world before Christ came and preparing the church and hearts for the true meaning of Christmas.

December 3

The First Week of Advent—HOPE! I THE LORD AM YOUR SAVIOR

Like the covenant people of old, we listen to the Israelite prophets remind us that God is our only hope of salvation because God alone has the power and the desire to help us.

December 10

The Second week of Advent-PREPARE! SAVE US, O LORD

Like the Israelites in times of trouble, we too can call on God as our savior and plead for God to come down once again and help us.

December 17

The Third Week of Advent-REJOICE! REJOICE, THE SAVIOR IS NEAR

We rejoice because we believe that God’s saving work will once again be realized in the person of Jesus who will deliver us from the bondage of sin and death.

December 24

The Fourth Week of Advent-LOVE! A SAVIOR IS BORN FOR US

We celebrate anew the earthly presence of Jesus whose incarnation joins earth and heaven, humanity and divinity and brings God’s life-giving salvation into our lives today.

Please note: December 24 is the fourth Sunday of Advent for all Masses prior to 4:00pm. Attending Mass for Christ-mas Eve on December 24 does not satisfy the requirement to attend Mass on the fourth Sunday of Advent; these are two distinct liturgies.

Office of the Bishop

Christmas 2017 To the People of God of the Diocese of Rockville Centre: Merry Christmas to you and your families! As we celebrate the Prince of Peace’s entrance in-to world history, we give thanks to Father, Son and Holy Spirit for the Mission of Mercy of our Holy Catholic Church. We give thanks for our families, our domestic churches, which transform the world and history with Christ’s Love and the Church’s missionary spirit. This past month we dedicated the Gianna Center of Long Island for Women;s Health and Fer-tility, which in its mission unites the Splendor of Truth of Catholic Moral Teaching on mar-riage and the Family with ethical reproductive science through the use of NaPro Technology and the Creighton Model Fertility Care System. This was an important moment for the Cath-olic Church and Catholic Health Services in it service to the common good of Long Island. The dedication of the Gianna Center gives a living expression of celebration to some im-portant 2018 Church anniversaries. On July 28, 2018, we will celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Blessed Pope Paul VI’s 1968 en-cyclical Humanae Vitae. Blessed Paul VI was prophetic as he courageously taught that all marital intimacy celebrates both the love-giving and life-giving dimensions of married love that cannot be separated. The Holy Father predicted accurately the dire consequences for society of separating the love-giving and life-giving dimensions of married love. He was widely criticized, even ridiculed at the time, but as we know from the Old Testament that is exactly what happens to prophets who stand up for liberating truths. Blessed John Henry Cardinal Newman once said: “The Catholic Church is not behind the times. It is beyond the times.” And as the renowned particle physicist Professor Stephen Barr emphasizes, in the history of the world, the Catholic Church is the greatest friend an supporter of ethical scientific development. The Gianna Center is an expression of this friendship, sup-port and partnership in history. CHRISTMAS BLESSINGS TO OUR

SERVICEMEN & WOMEN WHO HAVE GIVEN US THE PRICELESS GIFT OF FREEDOM

Office of the Bishop

On August 4, 2018, we will also celebrate the 25th Anniversary of St. John Paul II’s great en-cyclical The Splendor of Truth, which shows that moral choices and decisions that are grounded in objective truth transform and illumine the lives of individuals and society. The Gianna Center is a powerful part of that dedication to truth, charity and mercy and during this Christmas 2017, we ask the Christ Child to lead all those involved in the mission of the Gianna Center and all who are served by that mission. The Center’s patroness, St. Gianna Beretta Molla (1922-1962) was a wife, a mother and a physician dedicated to the progress of medical science. Her image is prominent at the main altar of St. Agnes Cathedral where I will celebrate Christmas Midnight Mass. I will pray that her intercession and her courageous and holy example may inspire each one of us and our family members this Christmas season and be yet another catalyst of dramatic missionary growth on Long Island. Sincerely in Christ, Most Reverend John O. Barres Bishop of Rockville Centre

“ONE JOURNEY THROUGH FAITH AND EDUCATION.”

SAINT DOMINIC HIGH SCHOOL NEWS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

On Thursday, December 14th, Mrs. Erica Andrinopoulos and Mr. Matthew Capozzo took 20 of our students into the city for the Midnight Run. Students distributed lightly-used items such as pants, long sleeve shirts, sweatshirts, jackets, socks, gloves, hats, scarves, and blankets to the homeless, which they collected over the last few weeks. Midnight Run is a volunteer organization dedicated to finding common ground between the housed and the homeless. It is especially powerful during the holiday season! On Tuesday, December 19th, we held our Christmas Fine Arts Show and Concert in the auditorium. The high school band, chorus, and orchestra performed Christmas classics and new favorites. The evening closed with our chorus and alumni who returned to sing a very spirited rendition of “ Hallelujah Chorus”. Additionally, many exceptionally talented students showcased their art work! Congratulations are also in order to our Band and Orchestra Director, Ms. Sloup, our Art Teacher, Mrs. Burton, and our Choral Director and Fine Arts De-partment Chairperson, Ms. Durante, for all of their dedication and hard work. I would be remiss if I did not thank our incredibly talented parents who decorated the auditorium, lobby and the outside of Canivan Hall. They were ably assisted by our Facilities Director, Mr. Dave Paterson and his team. Do not miss seeing the lights twinkling on Anstice Street in the evening. On Saturday, December 16th, St. Dominic High School hosted its 4th Annual “A St. Dominic Christmas”, inviting the children of St. Christopher’s Group Home/ Orphanage in Sea Cliff to our athletic center. To-gether, we were able to share in the celebration of Jesus' birth. Our students along with St. Christopher’s danced the afternoon away, played games and posed for photos with Santa! Once again, we are most grateful to Mrs. Michele O’Brien for organizing such a meaningful event. On behalf of the faculty, staff, and administration of St. Dominic High School, I wish you and your families the Peace, Joy and Love of Christmas now and all through the New Year. God Bless!
