From the Desk of the PastorEstimados Feligreses:
Dear Parishioners,Did you happen to make any New Year’s Resolutions for
2021? If so, might you have already broken them? For some of us, I suspect this ongoing pandemic and its
consequences might have provided some extra motivation to make at least a couple of resolutions as we begin this new year. One resolution that I kept hearing about over and over again is having to get rid of that extra “Covid19 weight.”
Having to spend more time in lockdown at home has meant that there is a bit more of an opportunity for cooking, bak-ing and most especially for snacking in between meals. Time spent at home also affords many more hours for exploring Face Book and You Tube or for plopping in front of the big screen to watch yet another movie, documentary or series be-ing offered by one or other of our service providers.
Even without a formal resolution, has dieting or giving up the number of hours of oftentimes mindless passive time spent as a couch
lead up to this year ahead? It has in mine.A quick Google search shows that
there is no end to the lists of possible resolutions journalists, bloggers and other health and self-help advocates propose for 2021. Some wisely suggest that it is best to turn resolutions from broad, general aspirations into smaller, man-ageable goals. These advice-givers even recommend avoiding the word, resolution, completely.
Contrarily, some have advised not to make any resolutions at all this coming year. Last year, they argue, was hard enough. And while this year seems more hopeful with the promise of
and physical distancing, working from home and minimizing our travel. So, they proclaim, no resolutions - be kind to your-self !
Certainly, resolutions can set us up for failure and thus dis-appointment when we cannot actualize them. So, not making any resolution seems like good advice. Yet, on the other hand, resolutions can put us squarely in the realm of hope.
So, what are we to do? Are we to avoid failure and disap-pointment or are we to skirt away from hope?
a method of how to decide. Simply, test every spirit! It is the same advice we heard about on the Third Sunday of Advent. You may recall, we heard in our second reading that day from Paul’s second letter to the Thessalonians: “test everything, re-tain what is good” (5:21).
Of all the resolutions, therefore, resolving to pray for the gift of a discerning heart and mind, testing everything, might prove the best of all resolutions. It probably won’t be on any

Paz:P. Joe
of those resolution suggestion lists though – at least I didn’t run across it. Nevertheless, this resolution can truly assist, support and encourage us on our life’s journey.
Our journey, like that of the Magi, whose story of the visit to the Christ child we celebrate this weekend, often involves
course and use a different route. Though we might not have a star or a dream to guide us on our journey, we do have the star and dream that Fr. Don MacMillan mentioned in his beautiful Christmas Day homily. He suggested that we not merely love, but that “we must love love.”
May we resolve this year to run away from neither disap-pointment nor hope, but rather truly test and discern what is most loving for ourselves, for one another and to God and then – love it fully!
Peace,Fr. Joe

Zoom DiscussionIn this encyclical, Pope Francis is calling us to be a part
of striving to build bridges with others, so that we might
share a more peaceful, fraternal future together in the
midst of a worldwide pandemic,
social unrest and widespread division.
We need a rebirth of “universal aspiration to fraternity”.
The Circle gives us a time together to reflect or SEE, to discuss or JUDGE, and to
hear our own personal and/or collective call to ACT on,
the teachings of this encyclical.
