Dear Parishioners,I have been amazed yet again by the generosity and kind-
ness of the St. Ignatius community. In the mid-March days of our isolation, we set up a "check-in" system to stay connected and offer conversation and resources to those who might have needs. Without even asking for volunteers, we were flooded with parishioners of many talents offering their service to oth-ers. I was not surprised; this is a responsive community that instinctively reaches out to others in good times and in bad.
Truth be told, in the beginning there were very few requests for assistance. We had many eager to serve, but few identifying their needs. It made sense to me, for in this time of the corona-
virus, we are all feeling helpless and powerless. Stepping up to be of some use to those who might be experiencing stress helps us make meaning in the midst of confusion and uncertainty. Often, it is easier to wash the feet of others, than to put out a single one of our own
tired feet to be washed.Our reluctance is certainly shared by Peter in John's gospel
narrative for Holy Thursday. Peter is adamant that Jesus will never stoop to wash his feet. Jesus explains to Peter, "What I am doing, you do not understand now, but you will understand later." In this season of isolation, we are offered yet anoth-er Holy Thursday to experience this mystery, another chance to try to understand. What exactly was Jesus doing when he washed Peter's feet, and what is the invitation when he asks us to extend our feet today?
Every year, I eagerly look forward to the Mass of the Lord's Supper. I love the fullness of community that I always feel on that evening. There is only one mass, so parishioners from every single smaller mass community come together for the eucharistic celebration. Witnessing members of the commu-nity coming up to have their feet washed is a powerful part of this service for me.
Through the years, I am remembering the faces of so many who have taken off their shoes, symbolically representing all that serve and are served in our midst. I remember the child who regularly proclaims the readings with great joy at Fami-ly Mass, accompanied by her mother who somehow nurtured her gift. I remember the grandfather who quietly, but tireless-ly brings comfort and eucharist to seniors in assisted living. I remember the refugee whose feet carried him from violence in Sudan to a new land through the hospitality of many. All of these parishioners hesitated initially, reluctant like Peter, to come forward to have their feet washed as example to us all. But it is essential that we give witness to their reality: somehow

En los días de aislamiento de medi-ados de marzo, configuramos un sistema de "chequeo" para man-tenernos conectados y ofrecer conversación y recursos a aquellos que puedan tener necesidades. Sin siquiera pedir voluntarios, es-tábamos inundados de feligreses con muchos talentos, ofreciendo su servicio a los demás. No me sorprendió; esta es una comunidad que responde, que instintivamente tiende la mano a los demás en los buenos y en los malos tiempos.
La verdad sea dicha, al principio había muy pocas solicitudes de ayuda. Teníamos muchos ansiosos por servir, pero pocos identifi-caban sus necesidades. Tenía sentido para mí, porque en este tiempo del coronavirus, todos nos sentimos in-defensos e impotentes. Dar un paso adelante para ser útil para aquellos que podrían estar experimentando estrés nos ayuda a dar un sentido en medio de la confusión y la incerti-dumbre. Cada año, espero ansiosamente la Misa de la Cena del Señor. Me encanta la plenitud de la comunidad que siempre siento en esa noche. Sólo hay una misa, por lo que los feligreses de cada comunidad de misas más pequeñas se unen para la celebración eu-carística. Ser testigo de los miembros de la comunidad que vienen a lavarse los pies es una parte poderosa de este servicio para mí.
A través de los años, recuerdo los rostros de tantos que se han quitado los zapatos, representando simbólicamente todo lo que sirve y se sirve en medio de nosotros. they have allowed themselves to be loved, and God's love now flows forth through them to others.
What are we to do this year without this communal witness? How can we come to a deeper felt sense of what Jesus speaks of, "that which we do not understand now, but will under-stand later"? We have no choice but to find new ways to pon-der why it might be easier to serve than to be served in our lives. In this season of isolation, we are certainly being asked to take off our shoes and socks: to take off all the structures and routines that give order to our days; to strip ourselves of our certainty and our arrogance that we can control or pre-dict the course of things. We are invited to reluctantly accept the vulnerability of offering our naked feet to a God who wishes to console, comfort, and bathe our hearts, hands and feet with love. In this time of adversity, we can still listen to the call to serve, but we cannot avoid the necessity of paus-ing to allow God to wash our feet before moving forward on the way.
As we approach Holy Thursday, we are invited to remem-ber this night from years past, but also to find our own per-sonal way to approach Jesus who wants to be close in this time apart from community. I have found "A Prayer For Washing Feet" from Seasons of the Heart by Macrina Wie-derkehr to be helpful in trying to come closer to a God who desires to wash our feet. I share this with you, along with blessings for your Holy Week journey.

que demos testimonio de su realidad: de alguna manera han per-mitido ser amados, y el amor de Dios ahora fluye a través de ellos a los demás.
¿Qué vamos a hacer este año sin este testigo comunal? ¿Cómo podremos llegar a un sentido más profundo cuando Jesús nos dice, "lo que no entendemos ahora, pero que entenderemos más adelante"? No tenemos más remedio que encontrar nuevas maneras de meditar por qué podría ser más fácil servir que ser servido en nuestra vida. En esta época de aislamiento, sin duda se nos pide que nos quitemos los zapatos y calcetines: que nos quitemos todas las estructuras y rutinas que dan orden a nues-tros días; despojarnos de nuestra certeza y nuestra arrogancia de que podemos controlar o predecir el curso de las cosas. Se nos invita a aceptar a regañadientes la vulnerabilidad de ofrecer nuestros pies desnudos a un Dios que desea consolar, confortar y bañar nuestros corazones, manos y pies con amor. En este tiempo de adversidad, todavía podemos escuchar el llamado a servir, pero no podemos evitar la necesidad de hacer una pausa para permitir que Dios nos lave los pies antes de seguir adelante en el camino.

CRS Rice Bowl - Holy WeekJesus liked to share meals with friends. Time and again in Scripture, we see Jesus at a table, talking with friends and strangers alike. He invites everyone to have a place at the table, to know that they belong and to have their hunger met. We hear Jesus’s command to feed the hungry, whether he is multiplying loaves and fish for a crowd of thousands, or simply breaking bread with friends. Jesus invites us to share what we have with all people—our global human family.
We have spent these 40 days of Lent learning about families who are both very different and yet, in some ways, very similar to our own. We have thought about food and how it affects many different parts of our lives—from our health to our ability to go to school and learn. And we’ve thought about what it means to be hungry in our world today and how we can—and should—respond.As you prepare for Easter, take some time as a family and talk about what you have learned from these stories and
activities, and what Trinh, Yvone, and Maria Ana and their families have taught you.Their stories of hope celebrate the many lives our Lenten journey has touched. What we did for Lent changes lives—
