“Rejoice and be glad! Blessed are you, holy are you!Rejoice and be glad, yours is the kingdom of God!”

There was much rejoicing and feasting in the Friary Room on October 14th for those gathered to celebrate the canonization of St. Oscar Romero. A few lucky pa-rishioners even traveled to Rome to witness the canon-ization. From El Salvador to Rome to Boston, we were rejoicing that this day had finally come.

Some of us at St. Ignatius share roots with Romero in the country of El Salvador. Many of us came of age in the Church as Romero was giving voice to a more liber-ated understanding of how God chooses to be in deep solidarity with the poor, oppressed and all those who suf-fer injustice. As we all celebrated together the feasts of All Saints and All Souls this past week, Romero would have us remember that no matter how ordinary we think our lives may be, we are all called to holiness in everyday life.“How beautiful will be the day”, Romero proclaimed, “when all the baptized come to understand their call to holiness.”

Romero’s homilies, often broadcast by radio, were meant to reach the ears of all those who labored daily, “How many cabdrivers, I know, listen to this message there in their cabs. You are a priest at the wheel, my friend, if you work with honesty, consecrating that taxi of yours to God, bearing a message of peace and love to the passengers who ride in your cab.” It is our persistence and attempts to live each day with loving kindness that connects us to the communion of saints and loved ones who have gone before us. We are also connected to those who surround us today, the blessed among us that reflect the presence of God in our lives.

This weekend on our Fall Parish Retreat, we will be praying with Pope Francis’ apostolic letter, “Rejoice and Be Glad” (Gaudete et Exsultate). Francis, like Romero, invites us to consider that holiness is accessible within our ordinary daily lives. “Each of us in some unique way reflect and embody, at a specific moment in history, a specific aspect of the Gospel,” Francis writes. “May you come to realize how God wants to speak to the world by your life. Let yourself be transformed. Let yourself be renewed by the Spirit, so that this can happen” (GE 19).

Dear Parishioners,As you know, in the bulletin on October 21 on the bottom

of Michael Sennett’s courageous and beautiful letter to the parish, there was a YES on Proposition 3 symbol. That was Michael’s personal, heartfelt plea to you, our parishioners.

Of course, as pastor, my duty is first and foremost to en-courage parishioners to inform their own conscience and make decisions for themselves. Fr. James Keenan, S.J., a Boston Col-lege moral theologian, recently wrote in an article on “Con-science and Synod on Youth” referring to the teaching of his late mentor, Fr. Klaus Demmer, “the first moral task for the church is to teach loud and clear, early and often, that we each have a conscience…The second task is to remind us that we must form and follow our consciences.1

It is important, therefore, to clarify that my, or any of our parish staff ’s, endorsement of a particular candidate for elect-ed office or our express desire for a vote for or against a given proposition or proposal is not to be taken as a reflection of an official position of the Church or the Archdiocese of Boston.

Let us honestly share with one another our views and feel-ings, respectfully listening and learning from each other, so that justice and the protection of human dignity from womb to tomb – our Gospel values – will win out in this and every time we exercise our democratic right to vote.

Please remember to vote on Tuesday.Peace,Fr. Joe

Paz:

P. Joe1. https://www.chicagocatholic.com/father-james-f.-keenan/-/article/2018/10/24/conscience-and-synod-on-youth

ActionHome Heating – Consider installing smart thermostats.Residential thermostats control 9% of U.S. energy consumption. Smart thermostats detect occupancy and learn inhabitants’ prefer-ences. The newest technologies also integrate demand response; they can reduce consumption at times of peak energy use, peak prices and peak emissions. Even at current prices, smart thermostats achieve payback in less than two years (Drawdown, 2017).
