The lives of Pennsylvania’s most vulnerable citizens, preborn children, the elderly, the people with disabilities are the dangling carats in the 2018 elections. Get to know the candidates running for seats in the legislature and
governorship. Go to their websites to find out what they stand for. And re-echo the song that our youth sing at the March for Life: Hey, hey; ho, ho Roe V. Wade has got to go and repeat it, as they do, over and over. And support those 500 eager young people from the Franciscan University of Steubenville that went to this year’s March for Life by voting in the positive. Meditation: “We talk about voting with a clear conscience, which means you can’t vote against your values,” (Father Frank Pavone, Nat’l Director- Priests for Life). “But to vote with a clear conscience, one must consider that elections not only put individual candidates into power; they put political parties into power.”
Join us for Cat Chat’s Marvelous Mystery as The Mass Comes Alive! at St. Isidore Church’s Vacation Bible School!! To be held on the Church grounds on July 9th - 13th from 9 AM – Noon.

My dear parishioners, One of the perils of studying texts
that are many centuries old is reading into them modern presuppositions that may not be valid. For example, most authors today begin with an outline that has a beginning, middle, and an ending. That is a bit simplistic but it is not far from the truth. Be it fiction with a story to tell or an academic treatise that seeks to persuade, the outline keeps the author focused on a message or plot that hopefully will engage the attention of prospective readers. No doubt Matthew had a specific audience, as we have seen, Jews and Jewish Christians in Palestine. He was also dealing with events that occurred about four decades ago whose memory was enshrined in St. Mark’s Gospel and in the collective memory of the local community.
The next event that Matthew narrates differs from that of Mark and considerably from that of Luke who does not use Mark. Matthew’s story of what is known as “Peter’s Confession” became one of the major proof texts for the Primacy of the Bishop of Rome, otherwise known as the Pope. For many years in the dispute with both Orthodox and Protestants on Rome’s status , Roman Catholic writers would cite Matthew and point to Jesus’ promise as the basis for the papal position claiming Church leadership.
If, in fact, this marks Jesus’ preparation of His disciples to carry on His message and mission, then the interpretation of Jesus’ response to Peter’s confession that He was the Anointed One, the Christ, makes sense. However, such an interpretation reads far much into the text than warranted. It is one thing to deduce from this incident that Jesus made Peter the leader of the Twelve, the core group among Jesus’ disciples. It is quite something else to cite Matthew’s version as proof positive of papal authority.
At present most biblical scholars are willing to admit that Jesus did designate Peter as the leader of the Apostles, which position comes out clearly in the events as found in the Acts of the Apostles after Jesus’ death and the coming of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost. That Peter would make some horrible mistakes subsequent to the confession, including his attempt to dissuade Jesus from taking the path that would lead to His death, should also be admitted. Peter was flawed and it is in his humanity that we see the real person who managed to triumph because of God’s grace. To that extent Peter represents flawed humanity responding to the Spirit and eventually becoming the person that Jesus saw in Him when He originally called Peter to be His follower.
The story of the development of the papacy from its modest beginnings in Rome in the first century to the present day is a fascinating one. And it reflects one of the major theological differences between Roman Catholicism and the Orthodox churches as well as the differences between the Roman Catholic Church and Protestant churches. None of those differences can be resolved by citing Matthew 16:13-20, although in the past this has been the case. If we confine our study to this event, then it must be said that Peter was given enormous authority in rabbinical terms. Yes, the disciples can bind and loose, can determine authentic teaching and can confront evil through binding the devil in exorcism. But to Peter alone was this revelation given, thus becoming the rock, the foundation of the emerging Church. Peter was far from being an autocrat, the sole authority in the Church. To separate him from the rest of the apostles and disciples is to distort Matthew. Rather he must be seen as the essential bedrock of the early Church. (190)
