The Mysteries of the Rosary, Chapter Three: The Annuncia on, con nued…

When the Blessed Virgin Mary received the news from the angel Gabriel that she would conceive Jesus, even though she was a virgin, she naturally wondered how this could happen. So she asked Gabriel, “How can this be, since I don’t know man?” (Luke 1:34) God’s messenger explained that the Holy Spirit would come upon her and the power of the Most High would overshadow her, and that therefore the holy one that would be born of her would be called the Son of God. Then he tells her something about her cousin Elizabeth having a son in her old age, concluding with the statement, “Nothing will be impossible for God.” (Luke 1:37) At least, that’s how it’s put in the transla on we

hear at Mass. But in the original Greek, Gabriel says, “Every word of God will not be impossible.” It’s understandable that the translators used an English phrase that’s easier to understand. But that way we miss the emphasis on the “word,” echoed by Mary’s response, “Let it be to me according to your word.” (Luke 1:38)

What is God’s word? Some Chris ans use that phrase to refer to the Bible. But it means a lot more than that. It’s not just ink on a page, no ma er how inspired those words are. God’s word is his communica on, in all the many ways he communicates. It’s the revela on of his being. It’s the expression of his thought. It’s the manifesta on of his love. And it always carries power with it.

In the Book of Genesis, we hear that everything was created by the word of God. For example, “God said, ‘Let there be light’; and there was light.” (Genesis 1:3) The crea ve power of God’s word is echoed by King David: “By the word of the LORD the heavens were made, and all their host by the breath of his mouth.” (Psalm 33:6) Through the Prophet Isaiah, God said: “For as the rain and the snow come down from heaven, and do not return there but water the earth, making it bring forth and sprout, giving seed to the sower and bread to the eater, so shall my word be that goes forth from my mouth; it shall not return to me empty, but it shall accomplish that which I intend, and prosper the thing for which I sent it.” (Isaiah 55:10-11)

This word of God became incarnate (took on flesh) in Jesus Christ, as we say every Sunday in the Profession of Faith. As Saint John tells us: “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God; all things were made through him…and the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, full of grace and truth.” (John 1:1-3, 14)

Even though Jesus Christ ascended to heaven a er his glorious resurrec on, he remains with us in so many ways, and con nues to be the communica on of God. As Saint John of the Cross puts it, in his book The Ascent of Mount Carmel:

Under the ancient law prophets and priests sought from God revela ons and visions which indeed they needed, for faith had as yet no firm founda on and the gospel law had not yet been established. Their seeking and God's responses were necessary. He spoke to them at one me through words and visions and revela ons, at another in signs and symbols. But however he responded and what he said and revealed were mysteries of our holy faith, either par al glimpses of the whole or sure movements toward it. But now that faith is rooted in Christ, and the law of the gospel has been proclaimed in this me of grace, there is no need to seek him in the former manner, nor for him so to respond. By giving us, as he did, his Son, his only Word, he has in that one Word said everything. There is no need for any further revela on. […] Although he had spoken but par ally through the prophets he has now said everything in Christ. He has given us everything, his own Son. Therefore, anyone who wished to ques on God or to seek some new vision or revela on from him would commit an offense, for instead of focusing his eyes en rely on Christ he would be desiring something other than Christ, or beyond him. God could then answer: This is my beloved Son in whom I am well pleased; hear him. In my Word I have already said everything. Fix your eyes on him alone for in him I have revealed all and in him you will find more than you could ever ask for or desire.

May the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of the Incarnate Word, obtain for us by her prayers the grace to be always a en ve to her Divine Son, Jesus Christ, the Word through whom God communicates all of his love, wisdom and power.

With love in Christ, Father Rudolph

Another way to honor the Blessed Virgin Mary…

Next Monday, May 28th, the Church reenters “Ordinary Time” a er celebra ng the fi y days of the Easter Season. It seems like an appropriate me to start singing another Marian hymn at the conclusion of Mass on Sundays. It’s called Ave Maria. Most of you probably know the English words to this La n hymn. It’s the “Hail Mary.” The older, La n version we will be singing is number 94 in the Igna us Pew Missal in our pews. Below is something to help you with understanding the La n. The three lines in bold print are the La n. The lines below that are a literal transla on of each word into English, with the English words directly under their La n equivalents. The lines below that in italics are the usual English paraphrase of the La n, that is, the “Hail Mary” as it is said in the Rosary. The plan is to sing the Ave Maria through the Solemnity of Christ the King, November 25, 2018. Let’s sing with love and devo on to our Blessed Mother.

Ave Maria, gra a plena, Dominus tecum, benedicta tu in mulieribus, et benedictus

and in hour of death ours. Amen.

and at the hour of our death. Amen.

“Where on earth shall we find Jesus but in the arms of Mary! Was it not she who gave us the Eucharist? It was her consent to the Incarna on of the Word that inaugurated the great mystery of repara on to God and union with us which Jesus accomplished during His mortal life, and that he con nues in the Eucharist. Without Mary we shall never find Jesus, for she possesses Him in her heart. There He takes His delight, and those who wish to know His inmost virtues, to experience the privilege of His in mate love, must seek these in Mary… We can only go to Him through her. The more we love the Eucharist, the more we must love Mary.” ~ St. Peter Julian Eymard

Confirma on Prayer Heavenly Father, in the Old Testament, your prophets and priests would anoint the faithful with oil. Through this holy anoin ng you made known to them their mission on earth. On Pentecost, at the birth of the Church, you sent your Holy Spirit on the disciples. On that day, the promise you gave of your Spirit was fulfilled to the whole world. As these newly confirmed go out into the world preserve the gi s of the Spirit in their hearts. May the comple on of their ini a on through Confirma on help them fulfill their bap smal promises as members of the Body of Christ. Amen. ©2007 Liturgical Publica ons Inc.

Blessed Columba of Rie

Columba was born in the year 1467 in the town of Rie in Italy. Her family were cloth merchants. When she was a teenager, she is said to have experienced visions and even a visit to the Holy Land while in a trance. She cut off her hair to repel men who wanted to marry her and at the age of nineteen became a Third-Order Dominican. Columba visited a murderer in prison and brought him to repentance. Shortly before his scheduled execu on was due, he won a reprieve. God did healings through her and she was able to live on very li le food. At some point she moved with her family about sixty miles north to the city of Perugia. Her reputa on for holiness had preceded her; she was given a warm welcome by the residents and a home in which to start a convent. She moved in, taking religious vows with several other women. A plague struck the city and the city leaders followed Columba’s advice to ins tute peniten al processions. Many sick people were healed by her touch, but she caught the plague herself. She a ributed her recovery to Saint Catherine of Siena. There were many serious quarrels in the city between various fac ons, between whom she acted as a peacemaker. Once she warned correctly that an a ack was about to be made on the city from outside; it was successfully repelled. Pope Alexander VI came to visit Perugia and was impressed with Columba, even though she gave him some kind of warnings, which were never published. Columba did offend some people by her honesty. She consequently suffered from false accusa ons. She also endured a lot of physical pain. Her deathbed advice to the rulers of Perugia was to prac ce charity and do jus ce to the poor. She died at the age of only thirty-four, on the Solemnity of the Ascension in the year 1501. Blessed Columba of Rie , pray for us! Missionary Society of St. Paul Mission Appeal MAY 26 and 27

Our church is missionary by nature. Each of us as bap zed Catholics are called to share in the work of evangeliza on. The Archdiocese of St. Paul & Minneapolis collaborates with mission groups every year to raise funds for their missions through a program called the Missionary Coopera ve Plan. The group assigned to our parish this year is the Missionary Society of St. Paul. Fr. Aloysius Nzekwe, MSP will be speaking to us from the Missionary Society of St Paul on the weekend of May 26 and 27. There will be a second collec on to support them in their work. The Missionary Society of St. Paul (MSP) is a congrega on of priests founded in Nigeria in 1977. The Society now has 260 priests. They are working in ten countries of Africa, (South Africa, Malawi, Botswana, Cameroon, Liberia, Chad, The Gambia, Nigeria, Kenya and Southern Sudan), Grenada in the West Indies, the United States, England, Sweden and Ireland. They also have about 127 seminarians in their seminary in Nigeria. Their mission in Malawi provides rehabilita on and support for over 300 orphans who lost their parents due to AIDS. They need our financial assistance to con nue this mission. They also need funds to: 1) provide fresh water wells, and educa on in rural communi es of Chad, Malawi, South Sudan, Kenya and Nigeria; 2) Sponsoring seminarians, our future priests; 3) Suppor ng priests in the founding/building of new churches. Your support to this worthy cause will be an immense encouragement to the Missionary Society of St. Paul as they con nue to take the good news to those desperately in need of it. May God bless you! Find out more about them on www.mspfathers.org

Six people are needed Sunday, June 3rd, immediately following the 10:30 am Mass, to pass out song sheets for the Feast of Corpus Christi procession. If you are interested, please call the church office at 763-537-8401, and leave your name and phone number. You will be called and told where to meet before Mass to get song sheets and instructions.
