irst Reading: Genesis 18:1-10

Our first reading highlights the generous hospitality of Abraham. When three strangers appear, who will eventually be revealed as divine messengers, he offers them a snack. When they accept, Abraham races about and prepares a gourmet feast for them instead. The scene ends with surprising words.

econd Reading: Colossians 1:24-28

In this excerpt from the Letter to the Colossians, a disciple of Paul reflects on a great mystery—through Christ, God has brought salvation to the Gentiles.

ospel: Luke 10:38-42

In the Gospel for this weekend, Luke presents two sisters: Martha, who is striving to be hospitable, and Mary, who sits at Jesus’ feet, listening to his words. In the ancient world, Mary’s posture is the mark of a disciple.

We invite you to prayerfully reflect on the Readings for the week of July 17

MARY AND MARTHA: THE BETTER PART

Martha, Martha, you are anxious and worried about many things. There is need of only one

thing. Mary has chosen the better part and it will not be taken from her." Luke 10: 38-42

Here is a reflection I hope you will enjoy. Blessed Mother Teresa of Calcutta often told this story in her talks and reflections:

"Some time ago a man came to our house and said: "Mother, there is a Hindu family that has eight children. They have not eaten for a long time. Do something for them.' So I took some rice and went. When I arrived at their house, I could see the hunger in the children's eyes. Their eyes were shining with hunger. I gave the rice to the mother. She took it and divided it in two, and then she went out. When she came back, I asked here, 'Where did you go?' She said, 'They are hungry also.' Her neighbors were also hungry. What struck me most was not that she gave the rice but that she knew they were hungry. Because she knew, she shared. I did not bring more rice that night. I waited until the next morning so that they could experience the joy of sharing and loving."[From Total Surrender, translated and edited by Angelo Devananda.]

"The better part" does not deny the "Martha" side of our lives that seeks to provide for ourselves and our families but consciously "sees" the needs of others and responds with the generosity and compassion that Jesus inspires in our "Mary" side. We are all like Martha in our own anxiety over details; we worry about the peripherals at the expense of the important and lasting. "The better part" is to see beyond our demands and needs at the moment; the "better part" is to maintain a perspective of gratitude for the blessings and gifts of our lives and to hear God calling us to share those blessings and gifts with our sisters and brothers in need. THE TRUE MEANING OF HOSPITALITY

The offer of hospitality in the readings from Genesis and Luke gives us an idea of the spirit of service required of the disciple. In both readings God’s Word reaches the hosts as service or welcome is being extended. Abraham and Sarah are promised a child, and Mary listens to the words of Jesus.

Adults: How can I develop the habit of reading the Scriptures in order to be more attentive to God’s Word?

Children: What can I do this week to help out, or serve, another person?

A Family Perspective: In our families and homes, we have boundaries. Some are geographical; we may have our own room or part of a room that we want others to stay out of. Parents may have home offices that are off-limits to children. Some boundaries are behavioral; children may speak one way to their friends, but they are not allowed to speak the same way to their parents or other adults. A curfew is another type of boundary, whose purpose is to protect children's safety. Talk about examples of boundaries in your family. For the most part, these boundaries are good. Talk about how sometimes we set up boundaries for the wrong reasons. For example, if we are angry with a sibling, we may draw a line and tell him or her to stay on his or her side. Explain that when we use boundaries to exclude others, we are being hurtful. Point out how in Jesus' time, some boundaries were used to unfairly exclude people. One example was from last week's Gospel: Samaritans. This Sunday's Gospel has another example: women. Talk about how the role of women has changed in your lifetime. Talk about how Martha is conditioned by the existing boundaries of her society, but how her sister, Mary, breaks through that boundary and becomes a disciple of Jesus. Talk about how you can work as a family to break down boundaries that separate people. Point out that when we pray the Lord's Prayer, we call God “Our Father,” meaning that we are all his children; no boundaries should separate us.

PATERSON DIOCESE MEN’S CONFERENCE

Bishop Arthur J. Serrartelli has announced the first Paterson Diocese Men's Conference, which will be held Saturday, October 15th at Saint Paul Inside the Walls from 8:30 am - 1:00 pm. The Conference is intended to enhance the

YOUTH GROUP HEADS TO APPALACHIA The Assumption Parish Youth Ministry Team left for

their annual service trip to West Virginia last Sunday, July 10th. Thank you for all of your support, as this trip would not have been possible if it were not for the generosity of our parish community. We would also like to thank you for your support of

this the community of White Sulpher Springs and the surrounding area. As you may have heard or read in the news, there have been devastating floods in that region which have resulted in the destruction of many homes and businesses. Over the last week we have collected thousands of dollars in gift cards and cash (which we will use to buy gift cards) which will be distributed among those who have lost so much. Once again we are humbled and grateful for the generosity of the Assumption community. The youth group members are: Danny Bertram, Brian O'Neill, Olivia Perry, Tom Quinn, Lauren Aloia, Julia Barone, Zach Baskin, Matthew Bopp, Justin Burke, Colin Burke, Matt Clarkin, Devon Colquhoun, Nicole Danielsen, Tommy Fennelly, Victoria Ferrara, Tommy Ferrara, Reed Gannon, Katie Gilfillan, Hugh Grennan, Michael Hillebrecht, Jade Jones, Fiona Keefe, Kelly Giammarino, Rachel Langenohl, Caelyn Mastracchio, Kaitin McLain, Megan Murphy, Mark O'Malley, Michaela Phelan, Lila Prevete, William Ramundo, Dan Reidy, Brendan Rochelle, Alyssa Romano, Emily Rusen, Chelsea Simao, Mackenzie Siverson, Emma Wong, Jenn Mele, Caitlin Murphy, Kasey Prime, and Safia Speer. HOLISTIC HEALTH MINISTRY

JULY IS UV SAFETY MONTH

As we welcome the sunny days ahead, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reminds us that without proper protection, the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays can be harmful to skin and eyes; placing both children and adults at risk for skin damage, cancers, and cataracts. Following these simple recommendations, can help us to safely have fun in the sun. ◊ Seek shade. UV rays are strongest and most

harmful during midday, so it's best to plan indoor activities then. If this is not possible, seek shade under a tree, an umbrella, or a pop-up tent. Use these options to prevent sunburn, not to seek relief after it's happened.

◊ Cover up. Although a long-sleeved shirt and long pants with a tight weave are best, they aren't always practical. A T-shirt, long shorts, or a beach cover-up are good choices, too—but it's wise to double up on protection by applying sunscreen and seeking shade when possible.

◊ Get a hat. Hats that shade the face, scalp, ears, and neck are easy to use and give great protection. Baseball caps are popular but they don't protect the ears and neck. If you choose a cap, be sure to protect exposed areas with sunscreen.

◊ Wear sunglasses. Look for sunglasses that wrap around and block as close to 100% of both UVA and UVB rays as possible.

◊ Apply sunscreen. Use sunscreen with at least SPF 15 and UVA and UVB protection. For the best protection, apply sunscreen generously 30 minutes before going outdoors. Don't forget to protect ears, noses, lips, and the tops of feet. Take sunscreen with you to reapply during the day, especially after swimming or exercise.

◊ Read package directions and follow your pediatrician’s recommendations for protecting infants from the sun. Your baby's best defense against sunburn is avoiding the sun or staying in the shade.

HELP CATHOLIC CHARITIES

HAVE A HAPPY SUMMER

The next few week-ends and weeks might be a good time to clear out drawers and closets of old clothes and footwear. Many of you will no doubt be taking advantage of the many July 4 sales that will be going on in the malls. So to make room for your purchases why not clean out your closets to benefit others? There are two ways to donate. Clothes that are

brought to the Catholic Charities clothes boxes here and around the Diocese are sold, and the monies gained from those sales are used to support Catholic Charities and their many outreach programs. Approximately $16,000 was earned in May through your generous donations. If you have clothing that is in good shape but you no

longer have use for it, consider bringing it to the Fr. English Center, (435 Main Street Paterson, New Jersey 07501, 973-279-7100) where it will be distributed directly to those who need it most right here in our diocese. To find out more about these programs and others

including the vehicle donation program, call Catholic Charities at 973- 406-1104.

HOST FAMILIES FOR

AFS EXCHANGE STUDENTS SOUGHT

AFS-NJ is always looking for supportive host families. By hosting an AFS Exchange Student, you and your family will help build bridges of intercultural understanding at home and abroad while connecting with an outstanding young person.

Host families provide a bed and meals, share their daily lives with students, and help guide and support them as they would their own children. Students come with full medical insurance and personal spending money. Families don't need to have school-aged children living at home. Families and their hosted students receive ongoing support from AFS staff and experienced local volunteers.
