GOD’S CALL The person who has been “saved,” who has “heard the good news of salvation,” still lives in an unsaved world, a world sadly oblivious to the pres-ence of God. Today’s readings outline how the disci-ple is present in the world. The outline begins with Isaiah: “Share your bread . . . shelter the oppressed . . . clothe the na-ked” (Isaiah 58:7). Those who hear the word of sal-vation are not insensitive to the urgent needs of oth-ers. Then Paul reminds his flock that he brought Christ to them not in eloquence or wisdom, but by being with them in the “weakness and fear” of their daily lives (1 Corinthians 2:3). Finally, Jesus tells his disciples to go out into the gloom and darkness of the streets of the world and let God’s light shine through their good deeds. We disciples don’t save the world. To the ex-tent, however, that we have heard the word of God and been awakened to God’s presence, we may spread that word and bring that presence to others. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

LATER . . . One who waits to do a great deal of good at once, will never do anything. —Samuel Johnson

Buon Tempo Upcoming Dinners Transfiguration Parish Hall

All parishioners are invited to the following dinners: March 3rd — Corn Beef & Cabbages May 5th — Pasta Pesto/Chicken If you are interested in attending, please call the Dinner Line, 510-483-6929. Reservations must be made by the Friday before the dinner.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION “Ordinary” is not always a desirable adjective. Who would not be insulted to receive a thank-you note for your “ordinary birthday gift,” or “the ordinary hospitality at the dinner party”? No restaurant advertises its “ordinariness,” no car dealer seats a customer at the steering wheel and whis-pers, “Look how ordinary it is!” Yet here we are in “Ordinary Time.” The word carries a different meaning here: it does not mean these days are dull, boring, pedestrian, un-interesting. It means “ordinal,” or “numbered” Sundays, a season of the year when we follow the story of Jesus’ life and ministry in an ordered way, with each Sunday assigned an ordinal number. You can amaze your friends with this example of Catholic arithmetic: the “Ordinary Sundays” begin with the last Sunday of Christmas, the Baptism of the Lord, continue until the Sunday before Ash Wednesday, and resume after a cluster of feasts following Pentecost Sunday. The numbers are calculated by counting backwards from the Solemnity of Christ the King, the Thirty-fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time.

ON CARE FOR OUR COMMON HOME

LOSS OF BIODIVERSITY

#39 The replacement of virgin forest with plan-tations of trees, usually monocultures, is rarely ade-quately analyzed. Yet this can seriously compromise a biodiversity which the new species being intro-duced does not accommodate. Similarly, wetlands converted into cultivated land lose the enormous bio-diversity which they formerly hosted. In some coastal areas the disappearance of ecosystems sus-tained by mangrove swamps is a source of serious concern. Fr. Terry’s Remarks: The huge growth in world population has put im-mense pressure on the need of monoculture to meet the demand for basic foods. Clearing our forests to plant palm oil forests, or grain, or large cattle or do-mestic animal factories is a simple, profitable solu-tion. But quick solutions can and do have devastat-ing side effects. It has taken Mother Nature perhaps millions of years to create our diverse forests and create a balanced ecosystem in which intricate and intimate relations between all the participants has given us our wonderful world. We must not be sur-prised that upsetting the balance so painstakingly achieved over time has placed us all in peril. We all need to repent and do due penance.
