ASKING FOR HELP The Beatitudes praise the poor in spirit. One characteristic of those who are poor in spirit is their ability to ask for help; they know when others can provide what they lack. Today’s readings encourage us to practice poverty in spir-it by asking God for what we need. What could be more natural than to ask God for good things? God is, after all, the inventor of goodness and the giver of all good things. Asking God for help puts us in conversation with God. These conversations take many forms. The reading from Genesis shows Abraham bantering with God like a skilled negotiator, while Saint Paul’s letter to the Colossians praises God for answering us even when we don’t deserve it. In Saint Luke’s Gospel, Jesus not only gives us words to use in our conversations with God (the Our Father), but also promises that God always listens to our prayers. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

LAUDATO SI’ OF THE HOLY FATHER FRANCIS

ON CARE FOR OUR COMMON HOME

Saint Francis of Assisi

#10. I do not want to write this Encyclical without turning to that attractive and compelling figure, whose name I took as my guide and inspiration when I was elected Bishop of Rome. I believe that Saint Francis is the example par excellence of care for the vulnerable and of an integral ecology lived out joy-fully and authentically. He is the patron saint of all who study and work in the area of ecology, and he is also much loved by non-Christians. He was particu-larly concerned for God’s creation and for the poor and outcast. He loved, and was deeply loved for his joy, his generous self-giving, his openheartedness. He was a mystic and a pilgrim who lived in simplici-ty and in wonderful harmony with God, with others, with nature and with himself. He shows us just how inseparable the bond is between concern for nature, justice for the poor, commitment to society, and interior peace. Fr. Terry’s Remarks: Pope Francis this week lets us look into his heart as he shares with us why he chose the name Francis and the universal appeal that St. Francis has for so many people. St. Francis was a man who embraced without reservation God, Humanity and Creation. And isn't that what we are all supposed to be and do? What has happened to us? Deep down we all long for union with God, our hearts ache to love and get along with everyone and who does not enjoy and glory in the wonders and beauty of Nature? Our young are aghast at the way we are treating Nature and our seeming indifference to the suffering of so many of our brothers and sis-ters and our mounting environmental crises. St. Francis pray for us.
