Gazette January 2017

“New Year, New Beginnings”

The New Year allows us to focus our dreams and hopes for the time

ahead. We might have ideas for ourselves and for our church

community. As far as the church goes, I hope that we can think

about how we might grow as church communities. This doesn’t

mean changing everything that we do and becoming a new type of

church. But it does mean thinking and praying about the future and

placing ourselves in God’s hands. Prayer should be the first action

when we are thinking about growing the church, in doing this we

are planting the seeds for growth as a church community and

trusting that God will provide the rain and sun to help those seeds

flourish.

Perhaps the most important thing (after prayer) that we can do as a

community in helping the church to grow is to become more

welcoming communities. This means inviting people along to church

and also welcoming them when they arrive. Church can be pretty

daunting for some people, getting used to worship which might be

unfamiliar, worrying about their children being noisy, and for

anxious people, there can be a real feeling of getting trapped in a

pew with no escape possible! So it is important that we are open and

responsive to the needs of those who trust us by coming into what

can seem to be a closed group of like-minded people. Praying for

growth means that we not just think about how nice it would be that

we might have more people in church, but that we are welcoming

and sensitive to the needs of those who do respond to the

invitation.

Best wishes, Jonathan Cooper

Appleton Wiske Community Primary School

We have enjoyed a busy and productive Autumn Term at Appleton Wiske Community Primary School. The children have taken part

in a wide range of activities and events. Back in November, we held our own ‘Bake-Off’ competition where the children baked some fabulous cakes. Many of our children have enjoyed competing in sporting events such as cross country and football, and the children in Class 1 have been gaining valuable experiences at our ‘Forest School’ where they have the opportunity to learn in a different environment. Our Year 2 children have also taken part in a very useful anti-bullying workshop and we held an e-safety evening for parents. The Christmas period has been an exciting time for us all, one of the highlights being our production of ‘Christmas 1914’ – once again our children were outstanding and performed superbly. Finally, on our last day of term we held a carol concert at St Mary’s Church, Appleton Wiske, which was well attended by parents of the school. On a personal note, it has been an absolute pleasure for me to get to know the children and their families, as well as members of the local community, in my first term as Head Teacher of this wonderful school.
