Etiology – What is a Heart Attack?

• Blood flow to heart blocked• Blockage• Artery spasm

• Heart muscle dies without oxygen

Symptoms

• Often different in men and women• Mistaken for indigestion

Men

• Chest pain• Radiates to jaw

and arm• Nausea and

vomiting• Shortness of breath• Sense of impending

doom

Women

• Often no chest pain!• Fatigue• Weakness or light-

headedness

What to do

• If you or a loved one experience any of these symptoms:• Do NOT drive yourself to the hospital!• Chew 3 baby aspirins (325 mg)• Call 911• Sit or lay down

Prevention

• Smoking cessation• Monitor cholesterol levels• Exercise• Weight control• Diet control

After a Heart Attack

• Heart muscle heals in ~8 weeks• Focus on health management• Diet & Exercise• Lifestyle changes
