My Dog Tulip 12A

Fri 1 – Sun 3 Jul Dir: Paul Fierlinger and Sandra Fierlinger US 2009 82mins Cast: Voices – Christopher Plummer, Lynn Redgrave, Isabella Rossellini

Beautifully animated and featuring an all-star cast voiced by Christopher Plummer, the late Lynn Redgrave (in her last film to be released) and Isabella Rossellini, My Dog Tulip is a touching, bittersweet adaptation of the late British author, J.R. Ackerley’s enduring memoir exploring the 16-year relationship with his adopted Alsatian bitch, Tulip.

Written, directed and animated by award-winning filmmakers Paul and Sandra Fierlinger, it is the first animated feature to be entirely hand drawn and painted utilising paperless computer technology.

“Is My Dog Tulip the best film ever about a dog? Is it Citizen Canine? My answer, yes…”HHHHH Financial Times

“…endearingly eccentric yet universally accessible… truly bounds and wags its tail. A treat that’s not just for dog-lovers.”HHHH Metro

The programme for this summer seems to look back to the 60s and 70s, more by luck than design, with portraits of real life icons of the time, such as Vidal Sassoon, Ayrton Senna and Glenn Gould; screen icons, like Travis Bickle from Taxi Driver; writers like J.R. Ackerley, whose writings are the foundation for My Dog Tulip, a delightful and truthful love story for anyone who has ever owned a dog; and see Catherine Deneuve discover feminism in the delirious Potiche!

Indeed, women are to the fore, be it as historic figures, such as The Princess of Montpensier or Margaret Humphreys, campaigning to reunite families split by forced emigration in Oranges and Sunshine or cultural figures like Pina Bausch, who features in Wim Wenders’ Pina and again in the documentary Dancing Dreams, working with and inspiring a group of young and aspiring dancers. In contrast there are women behaving badly as in the outrageous but thought provoking Bridesmaids.

For sheer uplifting perseverance, celebrate the resilience of the human spirit in The First Grader, a tale of a freedom fighter who struggles in later life to gain an education, a scenario echoed rather curiously by Larry Crowne in Tom Hanks’ latest comedy.

Standout film of the season is The Guard, with Brendan Gleeson as an unconventional Irish policeman harnessed with FBI agent, Don Cheadle, in a dark, dark comedy drama which recalls the spirit of In Bruges and Perrier’s Bounty and which opened the Edinburgh International Film Festival this June.

Have fun.

Canadian twins Jeanne and Simon are left two envelopes in their mother’s will asking them to find a brother and father they never knew they had. Journeying from Canada to Lebanon the twists and turns of their mother’s mysterious past reveal an emotionally charged and gut wrenching truth that is deeply rooted in the country’s tumultuous history.

An adaptation of Wajdi Mouawad’s hit play, Incendies, is a deeply moving story that brings the extremism and violence of today’s world to a starkly personal level, delivering a powerful and poetic testament to the uncanny power of the will to survive.

Potiche 15Trophy Wife

Fri 1 – Thu 7 JulDir: François OzonFrance 2010 103mins subtitledCast: Catherine Deneuve, Gerard Depardieu, Fabrice Luchini

It’s 1977 and women’s liberation is in the air but Suzanne (Deneuve) is still the self-effacing, elegant housewife of wealthy industrialist Robert Pujol (Luchini). Pujol oversees his umbrella factory with an iron fist and is equally tyrannical with his children and ‘trophy housewife’. When the workers go on strike and take Robert hostage, Suzanne steps in to manage the factory. To everyone’s surprise she proves herself a competent and assertive woman of action. Her new role throws her back in touch with union leader Gerard Depardieu, a romantic fling from the past that still has sparks. When Robert returns from a restful cruise looking to reassert himself things get complicated.

“With a frothy, sophisticated, quick-witted script, Mr. Ozon’s film follows in the tradition of the American screwball comedies of the 1940s. And the transformation of Suzanne… is a joy to behold in one of the most finely tuned, raciest and most gripping performances of Ms. Deneuve’s career.” The New York Times

Cria Cuervos 12ARaise Ravens

Mon 11 & Tue 12 JulDir: Carlos SauraSpain 1976 110mins subtitledCast: Geraldine Chaplin, Ana Torrent, Conchi Perez

Shot in the summer of 1975 as General Franco lay dying, Saura’s masterpiece takes its title from a sinister Spanish proverb: ‘raise ravens and they’ll pluck out your eyes’. Cria Cuervos centres on an eight-year-old orphan (the spellbinding Ana Torrent) who believes herself to have poisoned her cold, authoritarian father, a high-ranking military man whom she blames for the death of her adored mother.

Looking forward to Pan’s Labyrinth, Cria Cuervos is one of cinema’s most hauntingly vivid depictions of a child’s fantasy-imbued reality. Darkly unsettling, deeply touching and comic by turns, this landmark of Spanish cinema exposes a stifling world in which talk of sex or the Civil War is still largely taboo.

Vidal Sassoon PG

Sat 16 & Sun 17 JulDir: Craig TeperUS 2010 94minsCast: Vidal Sassoon, Mary Quant, Ronnie Sassoon

Vidal Sassoon is more than just a hairdresser – he’s a rock star, an artist, a craftsman who ‘changed the world with a pair of scissors’. With the geometric Bauhaus-inspired hair styles he pioneered in the 1960s and his ‘wash and wear’ philosophy, Sassoon revolutionised the art of hairstyling, leaving an indelible mark on popular culture.

Spanning 80 years of revolution in culture, Vidal Sassoon takes a deeply intimate look into the life of this extraordinary man, whose influence far outreaches the industry he changed forever.

A true rags to riches tale, the film traces Sassoon’s path from a London orphanage to international success and celebrity. This film shows Sassoon to be not only one of the great innovators of our time, but a cultural life force as relevant today as ever.

Winner of the Best Screenplay Award at the 2010 Cannes Film Festival, Lee Chang-dong’s follow-up to his acclaimed Secret Sunshine is a masterful study of the subtle empowerment – and moral compass – of an older woman who refuses to give up on life.

How can a few seconds of a football match put a family in upheaval? How do these “men in black” put up with insults and threats from fans? In The Referees, director Yves Hinant reveals the hidden lives of these men behind the scenes of a major football tournament.

Featuring infamous referees Pierluigi Collina and Howard Webb, who provoked the controversy after his performance at the 2010 World Cup Final, The Referees exposes fans to a new dimension of the beautiful game.

Revealing the conversations between referees, players and their assistants, this film delves into the referees’ world as they face abuse from managers, death threats from fans and their every decision to be scrutinised around the world.

Kind Hearts and Coronets U Tue 30 Aug – Thu 1 SepDir: Robert HamerUK 1949 106minsCast: Dennis Price, Joan Greenwood, Alec Guinness

A coolly elegant, critically acclaimed comic masterpiece, Kind Hearts and Coronets is a classic black comedy from Ealing Studios.

Louis Mazzini’s mother belongs to the aristocratic family D’Ascoyne, but she ran away with an opera singer. Therefore, the D’Ascoynes rejected her and Louis. Once an adult, Louis decides to avenge his mother and himself by becoming the next Duke of the family. Murdering every potential successor – all famously played by Alec Guinness – is clearly the safest way to achieve his goal. Louis employs a variety of imaginative murder techniques in order to achieve his aim, and gradually his goal seems to be moving towards his grasp.

Regarded by many as Ealing’s greatest film, Kind Hearts and Coronets was voted the 7th best British film ever made by Total Film magazine.

Fri 26 Aug – Thu 1 SepDir: John Michael McDonaghIreland 2011 96minsCast: Brendan Gleeson, Don Cheadle, Liam Cunningham

This comedy thriller, set on the west coast of Ireland, stars Brendan Gleeson as Sergeant Gerry Boyle, a small town cop with a confrontational personality, a subversive sense of humour, a dying mother, a fondness for prostitutes and absolutely no interest whatsoever in the international cocaine smuggling ring that has brought FBI agent Wendell Everett to his door.

However, despite the fact that Boyle seems more interested in mocking and undermining Everett than in actively working to solve the case, Boyle finds that circumstances keep pulling him back into the thick of it. These events unwittingly offend Boyle’s murky moral code. He realises that he needs to take matters into his own hands and the only person he can trust is Everett. And so the scene is set for an explosive finale.
