I’m deeply grateful to the donors who, embracing the vision of supporting outstanding cancer care, have made a real and lasting impact on the health and well-being of people we know and love.
Beth Knapp & Jamie Lee Curtis
Our 27th Annual Circle 1000 Founders’ Brunch, held on April 28, 2014, was enlivened by the participation of actress and author, Jamie Lee Curtis. Guests enjoyed her self-deprecating sense of humor and vulnerability as she shared many observations and stories. A long-time fundraiser and supporter of pediatric cancer research, Jamie Lee sported a pink wig in memory of 13-year-old-cancer patient, Katie Westbrook.
As is our tradition, a high point of the morning was the annual recognition of cancer survivors as they stood around the room in a quiet testament to courage and strength of heart. As I reflect on this moment, I’m deeply grateful to the donors who, embracing the vision of supporting outstanding cancer care, have made a real and lasting impact on the health and well-being of people we know and love.
As a Circle 1000 supporter, you have participated in making the Hoag Family Cancer Institute a world-class resource for more than 3,000 cancer patients a year, in our community and beyond. Your gifts have ensured that Hoag provides patients with highly trained staff equipped with advanced technology. We are proud to say that over our 27-year history, Circle 1000 underwriters have donated more than $15 million.
You will be pleased to know that, with your help, we raised over $900,000 in 2014. These funds were added to $600,000
in Circle 1000 reserve funds and will be designated to the following areas in the Hoag Family Cancer Institute:
• $300,000: Nurse Educator in the Cancer Outpatient Treatment Center for two years
• $300,000: Clinical Research Nurse Coordinator for two years
• $250,000 Melanoma Program Start-up Expenses
• $166,000: Oncology Nursing Scholarships
• $150,000: Nurse Navigator for one year
• $150,000: Discretionary fund to be used as needed by Hoag Family Cancer Institute Executive Medical Director
• $50,000: Oncology Staff Education (non-nursing oncology staff)
• $50,000: Sandy Sewell Oncology Nursing Scholarship Endowment
• $50,000: Annual Oncology Nursing Conference
Thanks to all of you who, through your generosity of spirit, have made it possible to fund these vital staff additions, scholarships and new programs to benefit the thousands of cancer patients who depend on Hoag. Thanks also to the in-kind donors, committed volunteers as well as the dedicated staff of the Hoag Hospital Foundation, for their contributions of time, talent and resources to make this annual event a phenomenal success.
With heart-felt gratitude,
Beth Knapp Circle 1000 Chair, 2014

MMaking a Difference
Circle 1000 donors have provided signicant support for cancer care at Hoag since 1987. The funds raised over the decades have had a profound impact on Hoag’s ability to provide our community with the nest physicians, nurses and staff equipped with the latest technology and treatments available.
2014 was no exception. Circle 1000 donors committed over $900,000 to support cancer care at Hoag. This year’s donations, combined with $600,000 in Circle 1000 reserve funds from past years, will allow Hoag Family Cancer Institute to make great strides. Here’s a summary of all of the wonderful things your generosity will make possible:
Building the Team:
As our community continues to grow, the need for cancer care is growing exponentially. Circle 1000 funds will pay for new staff to educate patients and families, facilitate clinical research and help patients navigate their journey through cancer.
• Nurse Educator in the Cancer Outpatient Treatment Center for two years - $300,000• Clinical Research Nurse Coordinator for two years - $300,000• Nurse Navigator for one year - $150,000
Investing in Our People:
Oncology nursing is a demanding eld that requires nurses to engage in continuous education and training to stay current with the latest treatments and best practices. Circle 1000 funds will pay for scholarships to support nurses in obtaining advanced degrees and certications. Circle 1000 funds will also pay for ongoing staff training and allow Hoag to host the annual Oncology Nursing Conference, a key educational opportunity that touches Hoag nurses as well as nurses from all over the Western U.S.
• Oncology Nursing Scholarships - $166,000• Sandy Sewell Oncology Nursing Scholarship Endowment - $50,000• Oncology Staff Education (non-nursing oncology staff) - $50,000• Annual Oncology Nursing Conference -$50,000
Creating Innovative Programs:
Hoag Family Cancer Institute is developing a comprehensive melanoma program to address the full spectrum of care, from early detection and prevention to the most advanced treatment options available. Circle 1000 has provided the seed money to develop a multidisciplinary approach that includes access to clinical research, a clinical nurse navigator and prevention and education.
• Melanoma Program Start-up Expenses - $250,000
Providing Leadership with Flexibility:
Under the new leadership of Burton Eisenberg, M.D., Grace E. Hoag Executive Medical Director Endowed Chair, and in partnership with the renowned Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center at Keck Medicine of USC, Hoag Family Cancer Institute is undergoing an exciting transformation. Circle 1000 funds give Dr. Eisenberg a discretionary budget to designate as needed to provide patient-centered care focused on early detection, prevention, advanced therapeutics and translational research.
• Discretionary budget for Hoag Family Cancer Institute Executive Medical Director - $150,000
9ISSUE 2014
Each year, Circle 1000 funds the Sandy Sewell Oncology Nursing Scholarship Endowment which supports oncology nurses in earning advanced degrees. This year, because of the unprecedented increase in overall nursing scholarship availability due to funding from the transformational Argyros Family Foundation gift, Hoag is awarding multiple Sandy Sewell Oncology Nursing Scholarships. In addition, the individual scholarship amount was increased from $2,000 to $6,000 per scholar.
Karen Linden is well-known for her kindness and generosity of spirit along with her strategic insights and actions as a long-time volunteer leader at Hoag. A passionate advocate for our community, Karen’s contributions as a member of the Hoag Board of Directors has helped Hoag make a signicant impact on health care in Orange County. A member of the Hoag Board of Directors since 2011, Karen is currently Chair-elect. Previously, Karen was Hoag Hospital Foundation Board Chair from 2008 through 2010 and served as Board Secretary in 2007. A past Chair of Circle 1000, she currently serves on the Circle 1000 Founders' Committee.
“I have been honored to be a part of Circle 1000 for the last 13 years,” shares Karen. “It’s a combination of the exceptional, committed women I have met on our committee and the generous, compassionate community who support our effort to fund cancer care at Hoag that continue to inspire me. I am deeply honored to receive the Vin Jorgensen Award for Circle 1000—an award that truly belongs to all the women I work alongside in support of Hoag Family Cancer Institute.”
