EXECUTIVE SUMMARY RESEARCH (55-70% appointment): Selected past accomplishments include:

1) Developed temperature manipulation strategies in greenhouses (DIF, DROP, DIP) that allow growers to control stem elongation and reduce chemical use. These strategies are used worldwide in greenhouses and controlled environments to modify plant growth.

2) Identified photoperiodic responses of spring crops (>100 flower and herb crops) that allow growers to control flowering to reduce costs and increase sales.

3) Identified photosynthetic requirements (irradiance, CO2, and temperature) of numerous potted and bedding plants to allow growers to reduce energy inputs while maximizing quality, reducing crop time, and increasing flowering.

4) Identified model systems for studying the physiology of high temperature effects on flowering (utilizing Arabidopsis), and the environmental physiology of vernalization (utilizing Raphanus) that are being used to explore the molecular biology of high temperature inhibition of flowering, and epigenetic vernalization responses.

5) Identified flowering requirements for >75 cacti and succulent species to facilitate the entry of these species as new ornamental crops.

6) See ‘publications ‘ ‘presentations’ section on next page for specifics on those items. Current activities:

1) Identifying photosynthetic requirements of numerous vegetable species to facilitate the re-emergence of year round greenhouse production in Minnesota.

2) Identifying combination plant growth regulator blends, insecticides and fungicides that result in synergist responses to reduce total chemical use.

3) Exploring ways to utilize natural plant defense systems and/or periodic stress treatments to reduce pesticide/chemical use, and increase stress tolerance.

4) Exploring the basis for high temperature inhibition of flowering as it relates to ABA synthesis and/or sensitivity among heat tolerant and intolerant plants.

5) Increasing the success of the ornamentals and controlled environment food production industries by identifying new crop production possibilities (greens, mushrooms, herbs, fruits), new production systems (green roofs, aquaponics, green walls), and environmentally sound practices (promoting/identifying pollinator friendly ornamental crops), and developing BMPs to eliminate neonicitinoid use.

EXTENSION (45-30% appointment): Past and current accomplishments include:

1) Working on relevant applied research that has resulted in the University of Minnesota remaining one of the top 5 universities with national presence serving the floriculture industry (note new USDA-ARS funding of the Floriculture Research Alliance).

2) Producing the Minnesota Commercial Flower Growers Assoc. Bulletin (monthly) for 12 years, managing the Florifacts website, and coordinating regional and state meetings to facilitate the success of the greenhouse industry statewide.

3) Having a national presence at all major greenhouse crop meetings (speaking) and in every national trade magazine.

4) Being the national leader on production issues around a) photoperiodic control of flowering, b) photosynthetic requirements on greenhouse crops, and c) ways to reduce chemical use (see speaking/publication record).

5) See ‘publications’ and ‘presentations’ sections on next page for specifics.

Minnesota Commercial Flower Growers Bulletin: Edited and published 68 issues of the Minnesota Commercial Flower Growers Bulletin (approximately 25 pages each). The bulletin was distributed to Minnesota Commercial Flower Growers Association Members, other floriculture academics, and libraries throughout the U.S. and 27 other countries. Articles from the Bulletin are/were used in at least 6 other floriculture programs for teaching. Publication of the MCFGB ended in 2004. Articles are now submitted to the MNLA Foundation Bulletin for publication. Minnesota Commercial Flower Growers Fax: A FAX is composed and sent to all those in the commercial greenhouse, garden center lists in the MNLA approx. 20 faxes were sent per year. The Faxes were sent from 2002-2006 and were focused on timely production issues and/or marketing info related to flower sales. Web Server Development: I/we designed and developed a commercial floriculture website in 1995 and revised in 2002 (www.florifacts.umn.edu). This is the first commercial floriculture server and was as a model for other programs. The site serves as an educational tool and a repository of information for research in the north central portion of the United States. MCFGB since 1989 were scanned and uploaded onto the website. An internal Google search engine was also added to facilitate easily finding material within the website. At this point the website needs to be updated to add links to the significant number of other online resources related to greenhouse production.

OTHER DEPARTMENTAL SERVICE ACTIVITIES Managed the Cowles Conservatory-In 1992 and 1993, I managed the organization, installation, maintenance, and funding of exhibits at the Cowles Conservatory in the Minneapolis Sculpture Gardens. This involved monthly exhibit changes and development of extension articles to accompany the exhibits. Managed Annual Selection for Horticulture Teaching Gardens-1993-1994, 1997. I selected

what materials would be grown at the Horticulture Teaching Gardens and at the Grand Rapids and South-west Experiment Stations.

Supplied Annuals For Campus and Eastcliff Plantings – 1996-2000. Through Bedding plant

production, we grew and sold most or all plant materials for campus annual plantings.

EXTERNAL FINANCIAL SUPPORT UBEEP Energy Savings Grant – Wrote an internal University of Minnesota grant to a program that supported projects to upgrade facilities to conserve energy. The grant resulted in a $700,000 to re-glaze the Horticulture Greenhouse with Exalite. This was a critical issue as the glass was falling out at the time and union workers were refusing to repair the structure because it was unsafe. Plant Sciences Research Greenhouses – Wrote the original proposal to renovate the Horticulture Greenhouses ($8 million project). This proposal ultimately grew into the larger Plant Sciences Greenhouse Facility proposal. A committee then wrote additional grants to NSF for new research facility dollars but we were unsuccessful. Subsequently, another committee I participated on wrote and lobbied legislatures to seek state bonding for the project; we were successful in receiving $18 million for the project over 2 years. Joint Watershed Research Center – I wrote, promoted and helped develop the specifics for funding of a center for the study of factors in urban settings that impact water quality. The center will receive $200,000 per year as a starting amount for a 3 year minimum duration ($600,000 commitment). Initial projects will be joint projects between the Department of Horticulture and the Department of Landscape Architecture to conduct studies on green roofs, parking lot design and invasive species. The dollars will support new graduate assistantships. Faculty from a number of departments are receiving funding from this source.
