Robert Bentley “This recount is over and we have won it.” Some mayors say they’ll bill county for repairs By BARNETT WRIGHT News staff writer Mayors of some Jefferson County cities said they plan to bill Jefferson County for any work the cities have to perform on county roads to keep them from becoming dangerous. The mayors said they be- lieve the county has unlaw- fully abandoned its respon- sibility for road maintenance and repair in its cities. County attorneys disagree. Last June, the Jefferson County Commission voted unanimously to end road maintenance in 31 cities as a budget-tightening meas- ure. Other BP officials, however, said the switch had been previously an- nounced and will not take place for some time. BP Chairman Carl-Hen- ric Svanberg told Britain’s Sky News television on Fri- day that Hayward “is now handing over the opera- tions, the daily operations to (BP Managing Director) Bob Dudley.” BP had said this month that Dudley would take over the long- term response to the spill once the leak was stopped, but millions of gallons con- tinue to spew and that milestone remains months away. BRYANT News staff writer Pink slips were hand-de- livered to 11 appointed Bir- mingham city employees Friday afternoon in a move Mayor William Bell said would help trim about $755,000 in fiscal 2011. Chuck Faush, Bell’s chief of staff, said the firings came after city officials evaluated employees and their jobs. He said Bell was committed to his pledge to “right size the mayor’s of- fice to effectively and effi- ciently perform city serv- ices.” To reduce costs further, Faush said some workers on the mayor’s staff will take pay reductions on top of an across-the-board pay cut recommended in Bell’s 2011 budget.
