T his deeply moving andbeautifully written novelabout different genera-

tions of an Indo-Pakistanifamily takes the reader on anemotional journey into howfamily and traditions defineus and our choices in life.

It’s a fast read, but its deep-er meaning resonates long af-ter the last page.

Haji’s novel is set acrosscountries — in the UnitedStates, Britain, and Pakistan. The reader sees the worldthrough Saira Qader’s eyesfrom her childhood in Califor-nia until she is an adult travel-ing the world as a journalist.

As a child she realizes that hergrandfather left her Nanima,or grandmother Zahida, yearsago for a younger British wom-an. Casting Zahida aside, heand the woman have three chil-dren. Saira’s mother refuses to

accept thesepeople intoher life oreven speakabout them.

So the sto-ry unfoldsas Saira —the only onein her imme-diate family— travels toPakistan, toattend thewedding ofher Indo-Pakistani cousin, who, now that the grandfa-ther has died, has invited hissecond wife and her children.Haji captures the pain andsuffering this man inflictedon his family when he chose anew life and shrugged off theold one. In one passage Zahi-da’s sister Adeeba talks:

But the years faded away asI watched her wrestle with themagnitude of what she hadlost. Zahida was bewildered. She had been everything shewas supposed to be — an obe-dient daughter-in-law, a duti-ful wife, a caring mother, a pi-ous woman — and she hadlost everything.

Toward the end of the book,Saira, who has been awayworking as a reporter, comeshome to be with her dyingmother. Daughter asks moth-er if she is angry that she left.

“ … You kept in touch. Those letters you sent werefrom far away. They made merealize and learn what Ishould have learned long ago.About anger and forgive-ness,” her mother says.

Her mother has finally be-gun a relationship with herstep-siblings.

“There is no room — notime — in this short life, tostay angry and hold grudges,”she said.

Loss, forgiveness, love, re-demption. The themes inHaji’s novel run through allour lives.
