Boulevards, angled across existing streets and linked together atdiagonals, served many different functions.

They connected the city's new train terminals more efficiently, allowedthe quick deployment of troops in case of revolts and "disembowelled"the troublesome neighbourhoods.

more expedient transport of goods and services around town as the localeconomy shifted from small artisans working near their homes to anindustrialized system spread over a wide area.

eight new arrondissements added around the periphery of Paris set up anextendible matrix for future growth.

    shopping precincts of delhi revisited

    France's premier centre ofeconomic activity

important manufacturingpowerhouse of Europe, especially in industrial sectorssuch as automobiles, aeronautics, and electronics.

city's beauty rests in its dignity and consistency, itssymmetry and order.

To others, the architectural pleasures of Paris lie far fromHaussmann's grand boulevards lined with long stretchesof grey, elephantine buildings.

No other great city has so little modulation of colour, material, texture and scale as Haussmann's Paris.
