If you look through the gate to the far end of the main square you will see the original Robert Gordon’s Hospital Building – the foundation of the institution as we know it today.

The Main Gate

This is the easiest place to start your tour (opposite the Triple Kirks pub).

Interesting stuff . . .

> the main gate was gifted to the college in 1886 from the Aberdeen Mechanics Institute.

> the statue (behind you!) is of General Charles George Gordon, erected in 1888 some 3 years after his death.

Facing the Main Gate, take a few steps to your right and you are now standing in front of the Administration Building.

As the name suggests, this building is home to a variety of administration departments, all helping to maintain the smooth running of the University.

Interesting stuff…

> the Administration Building used to house Gray’s School of Art which was originally opened in 1885 and is now based at our Garthdee Campus.

> the building was designed to match the Aberdeen Art Gallery.

The Student Association is made up of many departments, each dealing with a different aspect of student life. Whether you need help or advice, want to join a sports club or a society, write for the student magazine, or get involved in student politics, the Student Association will have something for you!

When inside the RGU: Union Building, students can chill out and have breakfast or lunch at the Cafe, watch the big match on one of the 7 plasmas & projector screens, get FREE wireless internet access, and of course…grab themselves a cheap pint (for the 18s and over!).

Open 7 days a week until the wee small hours with drinks promotions, weekly live entertainment and DJs, the Union is where it all happens..

Whilst facing the Administration Building, turn to your right and walk a few more steps. You are now in front of The RGU: Union – home to the Student Association.

> the Student Association belongs to the students.

You now need to retrace your steps and go back to the Main Gate. Walk through the gates and head for the building to your right.

You are now in front of the Technical Building where all our Pharmacy courses take place. Offering state-of-the-art facilities including our purpose built Pharmaceutical Care Centre; students are able to experience key healthcare environments such as:

> a new school of Pharmacy and Life Sciences has been created with the merger of two existing schools.

> plans are underway to move the new school into a purpose built, multi-million pound facility at our Garthdee Campus by 2014.

The School of Engineering has modern, purpose built laboratories and facilities which use the latest technology and equipment. Practical skills are an important part of many engineering courses with several modules including field trips and placements within various locations.

The Clarke Building also has excellent networked computer and IT facilities, using innovative teaching methods such as extensive web based resources.

The next building along (sandwiched between the Technical & Administration Buildings) is the Clarke Building – home to our engineering courses.

> the School of Engineering has its own racing car!

> the School of Engineering offers a Masters of Engineering ‘fast-track’ scheme which is unique in Scotland – visit www.rgu.ac.uk/engineering for more info.

Housing all our Life Science and Computing courses, the St. Andrew Street Building has a number of modern laboratories equipped with state of the art analytical instruments including a dedicated Forensic Examination Suite and DNA Profiling Facility. The building also has a wide & varied suite of computer systems including Unix services, Netware services, Pentium III & Pentium PCs running Windows XP.

Starting back at the Main Gates (facing the main road), turn right and then right again onto Blackfriars Street. Then right again and the St. Andrew Street Building is directly in front of you.

Interesting stuff . . .> the St. Andrew Street Building is the third largest granite building in Europe.

> the Forensic Science BSc was the first course of its kind in Scotland to have been accredited by the Forensic Science Society.

The City Centre campus library is also found in the St. Andrew Street Building and offers a host of services from the more traditional lending of books and journals, to IT and printing facilities, meeting rooms, quiet study areas and laptop lending. Within the library is where you will find the student Infozone - the gateway to student services and information. From travel to tuition fees, accommodation to application forms, finance to free time, this is the place for information and advice.

Just 5 minutes from the city centre, staying in our student flats is a great way to meet people and make new friends. Each flat is designed for 6-8 people with each student having their own study bedroom whilst sharing a fully equipped kitchen and lounge.

As a first year student, you would usually be offered a 37 week lease running mid-September – end May.

Standing in the entrance to the St. Andrew Street Building, head right and walk around the corner of the building towards the roundabout on your left. Cross the road at John Street and head left.

> a TV licence costs £139.50 and you’ll need one if you have a TV in your room.

ABOUT ABERDEEN

Aberdeen is a vibrant and multicultural city, home to a population of over 220,000, including 20,000 students. It is rich in culture, with a range of museums, art galleries, cinemas and concert venues.

There are five shopping centres with a wide range of well known shops and boutiques as well as individual shops selling locally-produced goods and an international street market held at various times throughout the year. Hundreds of local events are organised throughout the year by the Council, event partners and the community. The Granite (or Silver) City is also very green, with a range of parks and open spaces close to the city centre.

OUTDOORSWithin minutes of leaving the city centre, you can be surfing off the Aberdeen coast or in the heart of rural Aberdeenshire. You can easily visit the Cairgorms National Park, explore picturesque Royal Deeside and, within two hours, be in the Highlands, exploring the rich social and cultural history of the region.

NIGHTLIFEAberdeen has a thriving night life with a variety of cinemas, clubs and bars and restaurants – many of which offer great students deals, holding nights especially for students. Not forgetting of course the RGU: Studio Union, located just a stones throw away from our Woolmanhill halls of residence.

So, when you need a break from your studies, you are spoilt for choice with the many places to go and things to do to help you relax.
