Preparing for Standardized Testing—Grades 5 and 6The Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC) is the new state assessment and accountability measure for Illinois students enrolled in a public school district. PARCC assesses the New Illinois Learning Standards Incorporating the Common Core and will be administered to students in English Language Arts and mathematics. The PARCC assessment will require slightly more testing time than the ISAT and PSAE. However, testing will be divided into two separate administrations in early spring (March) and the end of the school year (May) and incorporate more technology-enhanced questions and a writing component at each grade level. Overall times fluctuate depending on grade level, but the PARCC assessment allots an average of 8-10 hours – extended over several days and two testing windows. Most students finished earlier than the allotted time during field testing last spring. Students are expected to spend approximately 6 ½ to 7 ½ hours on the PARCC exams, depending on grade level, and the PARCC assessment alone will account for less than 1 percent of the school year. Your 5th and 6th grader wants to do well and will seek approval from key people around them. Expectation results in a self-fulfilling prophecy. Students will rise to your level of expectation, so aim high! This course can promote positive attitudes for the students by being prepared for testing and becoming familiar with standardized testing materials. Books are required the first class session. 37942 FAM DA 4329 S2 12:30 PM-2:00 PM S 2402 Maribel Class runs from 10/24 to 12/12 Fee: $69

Richard J. Daley College Courses (continued)Preparing for Standardized Testing—Grades 7 and 8The PARCC assessment will be administered to all third- through eighth-graders and some high school students in Illinois public schools during the 2015-16 school year. The PARCC assessments measure a broad range of knowledge and skills, such as problem-solving and critical thinking, that are essential for success. The PARCC assessments also measure writing at all grade levels, a valuable indicator of college and career readiness and a skill that was only assessed intermittently and for certain grade levels on previous state tests. For the first time, Illinois parents will be able to see how their students’ elementary and secondary state test scores compare against the test scores of students in other states. In Illinois, more than 110,000 students in 500 districts and 1,200 schools participated last spring in PARCC assessment field-testing. As part of a motivational strategy, some schools have found success in having pretest activities to raise students’ awareness and enthusiasm. Getting ready to take a test involves preparing students emotionally as well as academically. Test anxiety is an unpleasant feeling experienced as a result of an impending test or other evaluative situation. Help students prepare ahead of time, over a period of weeks and months. Knowing what to expect increases student confidence. 37951 FAM DA 4330 S2 12:30 PM-2:00 PM S 3101 TBA Class runs from 10/24 to 12/12 Fee: $69

A Darkness on the Range: Films Noir WesternsFew types of movies would appear to be as diametrically opposed as Westerns and Film Noir. We think of Westerns as being in sunlit, rural open spaces set in the late-19th century and think of Film Noir as having dark, urban claustrophobic spaces set in the mid-20th century. Westerns have heroic, bigger-than-life protagonists, and Film Noir has doomed men on the edge of society. Western women support their men back at the ranch whereas Film Noir women are femme fatales. There are, however, a group of Westerns that reflect the psychological and societal concerns expressed in Film Noir. Not surprisingly, those Westerns often had directors who worked in Film Noir, such as Raoul Walsh, Anthony Mann, Andre de Toth, Budd Boetticher and Robert Wise. Join us in watching and discussing six feature-length movies in which Westerns and Film Noir join forces for a different look at the West. 6 sessions. 37286 PER WR 0050 6:30 PM-9:00 PM W A218 Field Class runs from 10/07 to 11/11, Fee: $7437238 PER WR 0050 6:30 PM-9:00 PM Th A218 Field Class runs from 10/08 to 11/12, Fee: $74
