Understanding the Heat Map: We need to transform East London’s connectivity to support high value growth

The major opportunities for East London are all in relatively inaccessible Thames side locations

1. Thameside West 2. Silvertown3. Albert Island4. Beckton

5. Barking Riverside6. Sustainable Industries Park7. Plumstead8. Thamesmead

9. Abbey Wood10. Belvedere11. Erith12. Slade Green

With a new river crossing and DLR extension Thamesmead would be connected into one of the most exciting and growing innovation regions. The new connection would provide access between Thamesmead and areas of significant employment growth, including the Royal Docks, providing high value job opportunities for existing and new residents of Thamesmead. All without adding congestion to the existing network.

In return, Thamesmead could become a test-bed for innovation, becoming a key contributor to this growing region and increasing the chances of Thamesmead developing higher specialisms within the supply chains of these growing areas (such as the Arts and Creative, Digital and Health sectors).

3 Thamesmead: London's New Town Peabody, 45 Westminster Bridge Road, London SE1 7JB

The full potential of Thamesmead as London’s New Town can only be unlocked with enhanced public transport and substantial investment in transport infrastructure. Historic underinvestment in transport provision has limited growth opportunities and the economic potential of the town.

We believe Thamesmead’s growth potential provides a convincing justification for a comprehensive programme of investment in transport infrastructure, particularly a DLR extension from Beckton, a new river crossing at Gallions Reach, alongside improved local transit connections prior to Crossrail opening in 2018.

WITH THE RIGHT TRANSPORT, THAMESMEAD COULD BECOME:

AN AFFORDABLE NEW TOWN

A CONNECTED NEW TOWN

A SMART NEW TOWN

A new river crossing with DLR in Thamesmead will unlock Thamesmead’s full potential of creating 20,000 new quality homes; thousands of new jobs; a greatly enhanced town centre; and a new leisure and commercial offer for the sub-region.
