SUMMER 2015NEWSLETTER EDITION

City Council’s vision for this area is progressive, exciting and unique, and is on track for delivering a family, arts and entertainment focused destination to the community.

Winding its way along our scenic waterfront, the Spirit Trail is a true City treasure, a fully accessible greenway that will extend from Horseshoe Bay all the way to Deep Cove.

The City’s portion of the Spirit Trail is 6.5 km long and links familiar and popular destinations with new

landmarks along the waterfront. A few sections are still being planned, and many are complete and ready for you to explore.

Kings Mill Walk features spectacular views of the water, a separate off-leash dog area and connects to the impressive Harbourside West Overpass, a 280-metre long pedestrian bridge that links to West 1st Street over the train tracks. From here, you can walk, run, cycle or inline skate all the way to Lions Gate Bridge.

The Moodyville Park section is a nature-oriented trail that features many pieces of public art, the new Ravine Connector and its mini suspension bridge and the impressive 3rd Street Overpass to Heywood Street. It’s worth checking out.

The City is actively working with the Squamish Nation on the crossing through Mosquito Creek Marina, and planning has begun for the connection through the Park & Tilford area. In 2007, City Council set an ambitious goal of completing our portion of the trail within a 10 year timeframe, and we’re on target for 2017.

SUSTAINABILITY IS THE KEY TO OUR FUTURE & THE CITY IS ALWAYS AHEAD OF THE CURVE

Our City Library was recently awarded LEED Gold certification by the Canadian Green Building Council for its design, construction and maintenance. Unique green features such as radiant heating and cooling, solar panels, low flush toilets and solar shading, ensured the landmark City building took gold. It’s only one of four buildings on the North Shore to have a gold designation and demonstrates Council’s commitment to ensure a more sustainable future for our residents. This is only one of the City’s many sustainability awards and success stories.

What’s new

in your City?Your City & families just go together — CNV4ME

Your City Council strives to make your community a place where children, youth and families feel welcome, included and heard, and have what they need to grow and thrive. So, Council’s created CNV4ME.

It’s a roadmap to help us meet the needs of children, youth and families who live in the City. CNV4ME places families at the heart of all City decisions, ensuring we build a healthy community.

Coming soon! Online Youth Services DirectoryWe’re launching a new online Youth Services Directory with a ton of useful info. Find employment, counselling services, youth clinics, volunteer opportunities, family support services, recreation and places to hang out – all on your mobile device. Its got everything for youth in our community.

Watch for it this September!

It’s easy being greenThis year, Metro Vancouver began its regional organics ban to stop food waste from entering the landfill. Residents on curbside City garbage collection service are using the City’s established curbside Green Can program. A recent change to the City’s Solid Waste Bylaw now also requires that all multi-family buildings have food scraps collection in place.

There’s a new box in townThere’s a new grey box for curbside recycling, and this one is just for glass bottles and jars. If you live in a multi-family unit, you now have a collection cart with a Glass Only decal. The goal is to prevent broken glass from contaminating other materials. Paper recycling has also seen a small but important change.

All paper products (newspaper and mixed paper) can now go into the same bag for curbside collection or into the same

mixed paper cart for those in multi-family residences.

What do you love about your City?WHAT’S NOT TO LOVE?

We can think of no better experts and spokespeople for the City than our residents, business owners, families, seniors and youth, so we went out and asked you the question: What do you love about your City?

“It’s a great place to raise kids. We go to the park every day and the community centres are wonderful.” Haley

“I’ve lived & worked here for 30 years. I’ve seen so many positive changes in that time.” Shawn

“Walkability and bike-ability. It’s urban but still community oriented.” Martin

Find out more at cnv.org/ILoveMyCityWe’ve got an app for that!CITYFIX – SNAP IT! SEND IT! THE CITY’S FIRST APP IS HERE

It’s called CityFIX, an issues reporting app that helps you help us to keep our City clean and safe.

The app is easy to download and even easier to use. When you find an issue, such as graffiti, a pothole or burnt out street light, just take a photo, press submit and that’s it. Your smartphone does the rest. GPS coordinates pinpoint the exact location of the issue, the photo and any additional comments you provide ensure that the City sends a crew to fix the issue.
