PHOTO: SUPPLIED HEALTHCARE: NURSES REWARDED FOR GOOD WORK Harare nurse on top MBONGISENI MASEKO A Michael Mapongwana Day Hospital nurse’s dedication to her work paid off after she won a provincial award on Monday 10 November. Bukelwa Alicia Sibidla, an advanced psy- chiatric nurse at the Harare hospital, walked away as second runner-up for the Makiwane Nursing Recognition Award at a ceremony in Stellenbosch. The event, which saw 13 other nurses from across the province honoured, was organ- ised by the provincial health department. It aimed to honour nurses for their valued con- tribution in the department. The 40-year-old always goes beyond her call of duty to ensure her patients get the best. She visits them at their homes to enquire about their needs, which includes generat- ing funds to buy food and clothes for them. “I am honoured and very happy. I care about and love my patients; they always come first. I do not just inject them; I ensure that I restore their dignity and find help for them when I cannot help. I also ensure their rights are protected and I do not want them to be abused in any way,” Sibidla said. Sibidla has also forged a working relation- ship with local NGOs and schools to ensure that the living conditions of her patients are conducive. She said some patients default to use their treatment, because they do not have food and some are afraid of taking their ARVs simply because they are scared of disclosing their HIV status to their families. “It helps to have an understanding of eve- rything about your patient. I listen and sup- port my patients. I try to make a difference to them,” she added. Sibidla identified an unused space at the hospital and started a vegetable garden which now provides food for patients. The mother of three, originally from the Eastern Cape, brought about change at the hospital soon after starting to work there in 2004. Provincial health minister Theuns Botha said he was “very proud” of the hard work and commitment shown by the nurses who drive the primary healthcare system in the province. “In the province, the extraordi- nary increase of patient numbers has put a huge burden on our nursing staff. The ratio of nursing staff versus patient numbers is not on par, which means we are struggling to have the desired impact on the burden of disease in the province,” Botha said. “However, this trend is a global phenome- non. In addition, the Western Cape has a shortage of qualified, speciality professional nurses in all areas, which is why we encour- age nurses to specialise.” The winners were nominated by their col- leagues at their respective institutions. A winner, first and second and runner-up was identified by a panel of their peers. They received a monetary reward, as well as cer- tificates and trophies. The first runner-up place was won by was Delena Cloete from Elim Clinic, while Ju- sian Ranape of Lady Michaelis Community Health Centre was the overall winner.

To transform yourlife, start counting

If you were asked to count yourblessings what will it be?Will you say you don’t have any?So many of us are like that; as long

as you do not have what you want, youreckon you have no blessings.Wrong. You may not have what you

want, but you still have blessings. If you are able to see, you are better

off than a man or woman who cannotsee. If you are able to walk, you arebetter off than a man or woman whocannot walk.Have you considered that? No, of

course you have not. You are preoccu-pied with your demons. You wantmore. You are not satisfied. You tell yourself all sorts of things –

sometimes nasty things. You tell yourself you hate the world.

There are so many happenings; somany mistakes everywhere. People areinconsiderate. All sorts of bad thingshappen around you. Fees are high andhospitals are poor.Doctors don’t care – all they care

about is money. They don’t carewhether you get medication or not.Why did they study medicine? Did theydo it for the love of helping others orfor the love of money?Youth are disrespectful. They do not

see elderly people. All they care aboutis fun.

Don’t let me start on politicians –they affect your dialogue too. You areso focused on other things, that youforget about yourself. You forget about the blessings you

have – the blessings within you. It ishard to change. It is hard if yourhabits tell you to put on the TV orradio in the morning. News is yourtonic – it gets you going. You can’t do without it; otherwise

what will you talk about to yourfriends? So all these things accumulatein your mind. They move out peace, harmony and happiness. They push it away. They say: “No,

don’t come and tell us about peace. Wedon’t want peace. We want chaos. Wewant to mess around. Messing aroundis fun. You are boring.”I mean we all want action. We don’t

want quietness in our lives. If so, howcan you change? How can you transform? You want

transformation, but you don’t want itas well. You want what you don’t want.See the irony?Peace is boring. Noise is okay. But

noise does not help you to sit back andthink about the good in your life. When do you have time to appreciatethe little blessings that you have? You don’t, because you don’t want to

know. If you knew you would noticethat you have more than one. You have10, 20, 100... You want to hold on to themyth that life is bad, when it isn’t.Only your thoughts are.Stay positive.

Getting creative to weather tough timesMTHAKAZI MAKALIMA

It’s been 20 years since the advent of democ-racy, one of South Africa’s greatest achieve-ments.

And we have to thank the people whofought and sacrificed their lives for our free-dom.

Now that we are a free generation, we cango where we choose to go and can select anycareer we want to peruse.

As the “born free generation”, we aregrateful the privilege to make better choices– choices which our forefathers were notpermitted to make as a result of their skincolour and apartheid laws.

Every man in this country is now free, yetSouth Africa still faces big problems whichdrags our economy. Youth unemployment, especially in townships and rural areas, isone such problem.

Statics and research shows that CapeTown has the highest youth unemploymentrate in the world. The World Economic Fo-rum’s (WEF) global risk 2041 report statesthat these youths are between the ages 15 to24. According to the report more than 50%of young South Africans are unemployed.

The rising cost of higher education has leftsome with debt and little chance of findingemployment.

According to Statistics SA, the youngestworking population rate is found in the East-ern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal, Limpopo andMpumalanga.

Today’s youth is often referred to as a “lostgeneration”, running around like headlesschickens as a result of a lack opportunities.

And unemployment doesn’t only affect un-educated people or those with matric, as to-day a matric certificate is futile. It also af-fects university graduates.

So the begging question is: what are thedifferent spheres of government doing aboutthis?

As unemployment increases, crime in-creases too. People are killed daily for mon-ey and cellphones.

Crime is common; it’s like breathing. It’sbecome a normal to walk around with thefear of bumping into a person who will pointa gun at you and demand your valuables.

When there are no job opportunities, peo-ple create opportunities to put food on thetable.

When you drive through the streets ofKhayelitsham you are bound to see youngboys standing at the robots, waiting for thecars to stop so they can chance to wash the

windscreens in return for money. This is just one of the many ways youths

have started thinking outside the box to gen-erate a couple of rands.City Vision took to the streets and asked

residents what they think about young boyscleaning windscreens in exchange for mon-ey and creating job opportunities for them-selves.

For Nhlanla Shezi being approached bythe window washers is sometimes irritat-ing. He is also concerned about the productsthey use. “Sometimes my car is alreadyclean. You don’t know which [products] they

use. It also scares me, because you don’tknow how safe the place is where they areworking,” he said.

Mlandeli Mabolo said: “I think it a goodthing, because there are not many job oppor-tunities for people in this country. It’s goodthat they are creating opportunities forthemselves; I just hope they don’t you themoney for drugs.”

Siphokazi Shologu said: “I see themaspeo-ple who are helping themselves. They arenot committing any crime to gain the mon-ey, but I am concerned that it may not be safefor them and motorists.”

UWC rector Professor Brian O’Connell (far light) with the university’s HIV/AIDSprogramme staff and USAID funders.

UWC celebrates successMBONGISENI MASEKO

The University of the Western Cape’s HIV/Aids Programme recently reflected onyears of reaching out to communities at arecent conference.

The programme aims to creating self-sus-taining communities which will continueto collectively strive for new solutions tochallenges of HIV/Aids.

With the financial support from USAID,the programme has evolved from a pilottesting project to an efficacy trial involvingover 7000 Cape pupils since 2000.

The reflective conference celebrated theachievements of the programme: 694 teach-ers received HIV/Aids education in 2010and 2011 and the programme reached out topupils and staff, while 79 principals havebeen trained.

Some of the scholars involved in theYouth Ambassadors’ Programme wereKhayalethu Tose, Vuyiseka Masala andNandipha Zaka.

Despite the programme coming to an end,the group plans return to their schools toshare their knowledge with their peers.

“We started with the programme at ourschool a year ago and I can confidently saythat we have gained a lot of knowledge invarious aspects of life,” said Bulumko High

School pupil said Vuyiseka Masala.“These aspects include substance abuse,

sex and the HIV/Aids.”Junior City Council member Ethan Caro-

lus said the programme had a great impacton attendees. He added that youths who at-tended can now inform their peers of as-pects of importance.

“I felt privileged to have been part of thisprogramme, which gave us advise that wecan pass on to other kids our age and evenparents,” he said.

The reflective conference was held overa three-day period. On the last day, theyouths were divided into small groups to re-flect on the programme and things theyhave learned. There was also a cocktail re-ception to honour the contribution of indi-viduals and partner organisations whichplayed a key role in the success of the pro-gramme from 2009 until this year.

A total of 400 community members re-ceived certificates after completing the 10-week “HIV/Aids and Me” course, while cer-tificates of competence were awarded to 250Certificate in Education (PGCE) and Bach-elors in Education final-year students whocompleted the university’s new “Sexual Di-versity and the Role of Educators” course,in addition to the “HIV and Good TeachingPractice” course.

A step in the right directionMANDLA MAHASHE

It may be difficult to adapt to having a deafchild, but it is important to seek help assoon as possible.

That was the message given to attendeesat a graduation ceremony at NoluthandoSchool of the Deaf in Khayelitsha recently. The event was a celebration for the school’sGrade R pupils, who will be moving on toGrade 1 next year.

Foundation phase head Nina Mafenukasaid that parents of hearing-impaired chil-dren need to understand the importance ofenrolling their child in school.

“The earlier you send a deaf child toschool, the better. It is easier for them tolearn, especially sign language, at a youngage,” she said.

“Our biggest problem is some childrenate only sent to school when they are older, which is not good for their academic devel-opment.”

The school currently housed 315 children.“The foundation phase is important, as it

means that the children’s development willbe monitored. It will increase the child’s

chances of gaining an education,” Mafenu-ka said.

“That, in turn, will help the child gain aqualification, leading to employment.”

She added another challenge is society’sperception of the deaf. “The terms that areused to describe deaf people in our commu-nities suggest that they lack intelligence. That is, of course, false as we have producedpupils who have successful careers,” Maf-enuka said.

“We need an attitude and mindset adjust-ment, as this often leads to families beingashamed of children with disabilities.”

The school was opened its doors in 1988.It is situated in Lansdowne Road, in Green-Point.

She encouraged the parents of childrenalready in the school system to support chil-dren.

“The parent’s role does not end when theysend the child to school. They must followup by attending meetings and helping thechild in the learning process,” she said.

“They must be supportive and under-stand that the children need all the supportthey can get.”

ago. City sees this as a vital developmentwhich must go ahead. The majority of theearmarked beneficiaries are victims of theterrible New Year’s Day fire in 2013, in BMsection, Khayelitsha. The contractor hasbeen disrupted on numerous occasions dueto resistance from ward 16 backyarder com-mittee. The city urged residents to partnerwith them to make progress possible.

Khayelitsha: Youth realises her dream

Tourism injection for Ilitha ParkMBONGISENI MASEKO

It was a memorable moment whenSerero-1 Accommodation andTravel was launched in Khayelit-sha on Wednesday 5 November.

The hospitality business is thebrainchild of 21-year-old Zintle Na-ka, who is currently completingher second year BCom Accountingdegreeat theUniversity ofWesternCape.

Naka developed the idea and lastyear approached her parents to as-sist to put the wheels in motion.

Soon after her family convertedthree of their five bedrooms into tobed and breakfast with a confer-ence room at their Pinelandshome. They then bought two prop-erties in Ilitha Park, whichbrought the tally of rooms availa-ble at their three branches to eight.

The business also offers a trans-port service.

Naka explained the businessfaced difficulties in its infancystage, but it has been smooth sail-ing since as it often sees all therooms fully booked. “I have seentourism in Cape Town grow, which was one of the reasons I sawa need to start this business. It isamazing to see the business reachthis level,” Naka said.

“My studies will help me to gainknowledge to run and expand it [infuture]. I feel great and want tothank my parents and siblings forsupporting my idea. I thank God

for everything.”Loyiso Mfuku, founder and gen-

eral manager of Khayelitsha Trav-el, said Sirero-1 adds to the already98 beds available for accommoda-tion in the area. “We no longer talkabout spaza shops in Khayelitsha;we now have B&Bs. All places are

fully booked for this weekend, more accommodation is still need-ed,” Mfuku said.

Abe Nokwe, director of Africanrestaurant Igugu Le Africa, saidplaces offering accommodation inthe area are supported solely byoverseas tourists. “Please come

and support businesses in Khay-elitsha. This is Vukuzenzele, which needs your support. Do us afavour come and support us,” Nok-we said.

Federated Hospitality Associa-tion of South Africa deputy chair-person for small accommodation

Matanzima Pae said their objec-tion is to help small businesses togrow. “We support the businessand will help them, like any otherbusiness, to grow. We have helpedsuch businesses to reach a highlevel and provide good services,”Pae said.

Nomhle, Sufumene, Buhle, Zintle, Sisa and Zandiule Naka were delighted when they launched their family business Sirero-1 in Khayelitsha on Wednesday 5November. PHOTO: MBONGISENI MASEKO

Langa football legend to be buried on SaturdayCHAIN NQOLOBE

NkosanaHoseyMngomeni passed away qui-etly after suffering a stroke a while ago. Some people might be asking: “Who is Nko-sana?”

He was born in Haarlem Street in the1940s.

I met Nkosana atMariazelMission Schoolin Matitiel in 1960s, in the austere companyof Capetonians such as Lizo Mahola, Tho-mas Kopane, Mavis Ndzudza, Popeye Cuba,Xoliswa Speelman, Mncedisi Mafu, PaksieMtsinga and Victor Masepe – the list is end-less. What a wonderful experience we hadeMaRomeni. Among the teaching staff was

Killian Mngomeni and “D enD” Deane. Once, close to theend of the year exams, wewere visited by a migratorybird Phez’komkhono, warn-ing the Form 2 boys to “wasteno time”. In football back atKwa-Langa, Nkosana was oneof the founders of Spes BonaFCwithVictorMasepe. Thosewere wonderful sportingyears in Langa. Some of thebig teams in Langa at the timewere Black Swallows, Bafana,Cubs, Orion Athletics FC, TKLions, Herschel Defenders, Zulu and Wan-

derers. The standard of foot-ball was very high and weplayed against some of thepresent PSL clubs like Bloem-fontein Centic, Kaizer Chiefs,OrlandoPirates,MorokaSwal-lows, Amazulu, ManguangUnited, Benoni United andKatlehong United. All thesematches were played at theLanga Stadium.Yes, the LangaStadium was the nerve centreof football in the townships.Hozeywas a no-nonsense rightback. He dealt with all the for-

wardswho came his way. Nkosana had a big

heart and to proved this point. Nkosana leftto Mzimkhulu – a part of Transkei – to con-nect with other Ngwanes’ of the EasternCape. His mission was successful.

To all football veterans: sicela umgeni na-kwa banye abafana bebhola ekhatywayo.Langa has no documented football history.

Fish Galo is waiting for his piece of workto be done. Nkosana will be laid to rest onSaturday 15 November at eRoma Kwa-Lan-ga.

Bra Pat will lead the other brothers to wel-come Hozey, followed by Killian, Mvikeli, and Squad. From the football fraternitysithi: Hamba Kahle, Ngwane. It’s a strangeworld we live in, Master Jack.

Lack of funding may bringan ending to Ratye’s dreamMANDLA MNYAKAMA

Bodybuilder Oscar Ratye (27) is seekingfunding to help him travel to Brazil for abodybuilding competition next week. The Khayelitsha resident is one of 11

SouthAfricanathleteswhohasbeenafford-ed the opportunity to attend the event. The invitationwas extended by the Inter-

national Federation of Body Building (IF-BB) and Body Building South Africa (BB-SA) two months ago.Ratye took first position in the middle-

weight division of the SouthAfricanCham-pionships held atGrandWest in September. His return ticket will cost him R10 000.Thehardworkingathlete claimshis pleas

for assistance to provincial governmentand theCity ofCapeTownhas fallen ondeafears.“I have approached various organisa-

tions, such as the Khayelitsha Develop-ment Forumand private businesses, but allmy efforts were in vain. The City suggestedtheywill providemewitha communityhallinmy area to host a fundraising event. Thiswas forme to raise cash towardsmy travel-ling expenses, because they donot fund ath-letes,” he said.“I couldnot do that as it didnot guarantee

any potential for me to achieve such a goal;there is too much poverty in my area. Theprovincial Department of Cultural Affairsand Sport also turned down my request.”He described the news of no government

funding as “a painful disappointment”.“I had hoped government could not resist

funding bodybuilding athletes from disad-vantaged areas when they were invited torepresent the country abroad,” Ratye said.“I feel it is unfair. It seems government

only focuses on supporting boxing, cricket, soccer and rugby sport codes in disadvan-taged areas.BBSA’s Wayne Price BBSA said the or-

ganisation was only able to raise R4000 foreach of the selected athletes.Price added their own attempts to find

travelling assistance for the battling ath-letes also failed.“Oscar has been everywhere [for fund-

ing], including theprovincial sports depart-ment, but did not find help,” he said. The IFBB has undertaken to fund Ratye’s

accommodation and catering once he ar-rives in Brazil.Provincial Cultural Affairs and Sport

spokesperson Sello More undertook to in-vestigate the matter.

Bodybuilder Ocsar Ratye is seeking funds torepresent South Africa at an internationalcompetition in Brazil.

Shakes lashes out at Bafana absconding starBafana Bafana coach, Ephraim ‘Shakes’Mashaba, has lashed out at May Mahlangufor complaining about fatigue when calledupon to represent the national team.Mahlan-gu was named in team that is preparing forcrucial 2015 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiersagainst Sudan and Nigeria respective-

ly.“This is not acceptable for a player to talkabout fatigue when they have to representtheir national team...I can only hope peoplewill understand when these players are notcalled again in the national team. But thenagain the country has a lot of talent to get dis-appointed about one player.
