KABUL, 15 Oct—Afghanistan’s health authoritiesFriday appealed for international help in dealing witha parasitic disease that is believed to threaten millionsin the impoverished country.

Leishmaniasis, transmitted by a species of sandfly, threatened the health of 13 million Afghans, the WorldHealth Organisation (WHO) said in a report onneglected tropical diseases.

It said the disease had affected an estimated 65,000people in Kabul in 2009, markedly higher than the17,000 who were expected to get the disease each year, but many more were likely to have been hit due tounder-reporting.

“This number is likely to be the tip of the icebergas cases are grossly under-reported owing to poordiagnostic tools and the stigma that is attached to thisdisease,” WHO’s Afghanistan representative PeterGraaff was quoted as saying.

The main symptom of the disease is skin sores thaterupt weeks to months after the victim has been bitten,WHO said.—Internet

ScienceNew species of carnivorous

mammal found in MadagascarANTANANARIVO, 15 Oct—A new species of

carnivorous mammal, likely highly endangered, has beendiscovered in eastern Madagascar, conservationists toldAFP Thursday.

The animal, brown and similar to a mongoose, wasfound in the wetlands of Lake Alaotra, the largest expanseof fresh water on the Indian Ocean island.

It has been baptised Durrell’s vontsira (Salanoiadurelli) after the late British naturalist Gerald Durrell, who led conservation projects in Madagascar.

The mammal belongs to the eupleridae family, whichis endemic to Madagascar.

“We noticed the existence of this mammal severalyears ago but we thought it was a species we already knewand that is found in the forest,” said Robert Bourou, anassistant researcher with the Durrell Wildlife ConservationTrust who took part in the operation to capture a specimenof Durrell’s vontsira in 2004. The specimen capturedallowed scientists at the Natural History Museum inLondon to determine they were looking at a specieshitherto unknown.

Experts fear Durrell’s vontsira is already highlyendangered. “It is likely one of the species of carnivorethat numbers the fewest individuals and that are the mostendangered in the world,” said Frank Hawkins ofConservation International. Bush fires and insufficientrain are contributing to the drying up of the Alaotrawetlands and conservationists have been trying for thepast several years to increase local awareness of theimportance of protecting biodiversity.—Internet

Immune protein plays role inabnormal brain development

LOS ANGELES, 15 Oct— Exposing fetal neurons to higher thannormal levels of a common immune protein leads to abnormal braindevelopment in mice, a new study suggests.

Researchers at the University of California in Los Angeles( UCLA) based their conclusion on analysis of a protein called majorhistocompatibility complex, or MHC.

The protein plays a dual role in the body: It helps the immunesystem to identify infected cells, and it enables neurons to make theright connections with each other in the brain.

The finding may provide new insights into factors contributingto human neurological disorders like schizophrenia and autism, theresearchers said in the study published Thursday on the onlineJournal of Neuroimmunology.

“When neurons sense infection or damage to the brain, theyproduce more MHC,” said Daniel Kaufman, professor of molecularand medical pharmacology at the David Geffen School of Medicineat UCLA. “We wanted to explore whether higher levels of MHCaffect how the brain develops.”

Kaufman and his colleagues studied the development of micewhose neurons were genetically engineered to produce more MHCthan normal.

Focusing on two key regions of the brain, the researchers lookedat neurons that process vision and neurons involved in learning andmemory. Next, the team compared these cells with their counterpartsin normal mice.

What the scientists saw confirmed their hunch.“The mice whose neurons produced extra MHC showed subtle

changes in the connections between those neurons and other neuronsin both brain regions,” Kaufman said.

The UCLA finding could be of relevance in unraveling theorigins of schizophrenia and autism, he noted.—Xinhua

German economy to increase3.5 percent in 2010

BERLIN, 15 Oct— German economy will rise 3.5percent in 2010 and 2 percent in 2011, asunemployment rate falls to 7 percent next year, leadingeconomic institutes said on Thursday.

Eight economic institutes selected by the Germangovernment together issued their two-year report, saying, “German economy is on an upward track tomake up for the fall in production caused by thecrisis.”

Growth is expected to slow down due to thecooling of global economy, but it is still healthy, anddomestic consumption will become a shining point, the report said.

“Domestic consumption and investment haswitnessed significant acceleration,” the report said, influenced by surging exports since 2010.

The people out of work are expected to fall below3 million in 2011, the lowest level since 1992, whichwill push domestic consumptions to see a “noticeablerise for the first time in several years.” The Germangovernment deficits are also expected to fall to 2.7percent of GDP in 2011, as the government’s stimulusprogramme fades out and serious budget saving plantakes effect.

Then Germany will become the first major EUnation to realize the goal of limiting governmentdeficits within 3 percent of GDP, while Spain andFrance both forecasted their deficits would be 6percent of GDP in 2011 and Italy predicted 3.9percent.—Xinhua

Excluding the volatile food and energy sectors, core wholesale prices ticked up 0.1 percent inSeptember, the same as in August. Economists believethat inflation remains no problem at the momentbecause of downward pressure on wages and pricesas a result of the recession. They also contend that thesubdued inflation pressure gives the US FederalReserve room to keep interest rates low and takefurther quantitative easing moves to boost the falteringeconomic recovery.

For many people, today is not World Food Day. It is another No Food Day. Although the number of hungry people has fallen from last year’s historic highof more than one billion, there are still 925 million hungry people in the world. We are continually reminded that the world’s food systems are not working inways that ensure food security for the most vulnerable members of oursocieties.

The hunger target set out in the first Millennium Development Goal — tocut the proportion of hungry people by half by 2015 — is a pillar for achievingall the goals. When people are hungry, they cannot break the crippling chainsof poverty, and are vulnerable to infectious diseases. When children arehungry, they cannot grow, learn and develop.

This year alone, millions have been thrown into life-threatening hunger bythe earthquake in Haiti, drought in the Sahel and floods in Pakistan. The foodand financial crises continue to affect the world’s most vulnerable. Food pricesremain volatile and recently hit a two-year high.

This year’s theme for World Food Day, “United Against Hunger,” reflectsa welcome development: a growing number of governments, intergovernmentalorganizations, regional and sub-regional bodies, businesses and civil societygroups are forming partnerships and implementing joint solutions. Increasingly, their approach is comprehensive — focusing on more stable supplies of food, better access to food and optimizing nutrition at the household level. Theycover the full spectrum of food security, from smallholder farming to feedingschoolchildren. They help save lives in emergencies through food assistance.

In recent months, there has been more attention to nutrition and gettingthe right food to the right people at the right time. This calls for agriculture, health and social security systems to be sensitive to nutritional needs, and forspecific interventions to improve the nutrition of children from conception tothe age of two years.

I urge everyone to work towards such a comprehensive approach, and to doso in partnership, so that we can build on the progress we have made in reducingthe numbers of hungry people. Let us unite against hunger and ensure food andnutrition security for all.—UNIC

ONKERS, 15 Oct—About 37 percent of US adultssay they plan to get the seasonal influenza vaccine thisyear, down from 45 percent last flu season, a surveyindicates.

A nationally representative poll of 1,500 adultsfrom the Consumer Reports National Research Centresays one of the top reasons given for avoiding the flushot this flu season is that people thought last year’sepidemic was overblown.

Tim Uyeki, a medical epidemiologist in the Centresfor Disease Control and Prevention’s influenza divisionsays although last year’s estimated flu death toll wasabout half that of an average seasonal flu season from1976 to 2006, the numbers do not reflect the severityof the pandemic.

“It had a disproportionate impact on youngeradults,” Uyeki says in a statement.

About 270,000 people in the United States werehospitalized with H1N1 and 12,470 died, the CDCestimates. In most years about 90 percent of the deathsfrom seasonal flu are among those 65 and older but 87percent of the deaths last year were among those age 65and under.—Internet

OPEC holds oil output, warns on risks to recovery

VIENNA, 15 Oct—The Organization of PetroleumExporting Countries left its official oil productiontarget unchanged on Thursday, claiming the marketwas well supplied amid risks to the economicrecovery.

OPEC, which pumps 40 percent of the world’soil, agreed to keep its target at 24.84 million barrelsa day at a ministerial meeting here against an unclearprice outlook and data pointing to surprisingly strongenergy demand.

“Based on its detailed analysis of importantmarket drivers, which clearly reveals that the marketremains well supplied, and given the persistingsignificant downside risks to world economicrecovery, the conference decided to leave currentproduction levels unchanged,” OPEC said in a finalcommunique.

OPEC also elected Iran to become the cartel’spresident in 2011, a post it will hold for the first timein 36 years. Ecuador is the current president.

The oil market registered little reaction to theoutput decision, with Brent North Sea crude forNovember delivery remaining close to 85 dollars abarrel in London trade after solid gains in recentdays. Ahead of the meeting, and mindful that a spikein prices could harm a slowing global economicrecovery, OPEC kingpin Saudi Arabia said it washappy for crude to stay around 70-80 dollars, whereit has been for much of the past year.—Internet
