PROJECT DESCRIPTION CLA-US 40-26.03L PID 88796 SFN 1201417 The proposed project will replace the existing bridge carrying westbound US 40 over Beaver Creek in Harmony Township, Clark County. US 40 is a rural major collector at the project location, with an average daily traffic of 3200 vehicles. The existing bridge is a single-span pre-stressed concrete box beam bridge on reinforced concrete abutments. The existing bridge has a clear span of 30’ , face-to-face of abutments. The roadway width is 40’ , face-to-face of guardrail. The structure has a sufficiency rating of 79.3 and a general appraisal rating of 5. Conditions noted at the time of the November 2011 bridge inspection included cracks on the superstructure beams; and heavy deterioration with exposed steel, deep scale, and delaminations of the abutments and wingwalls. The bridge is expected to be rated poor (general appraisal of 4) at the time of project sale (FY 2018). The existing bridge is nearing the end of its serviceable life. Failure to address the condition of this structure will result in its continued deterioration, leading to the posting of load limits and the eventual closure of the bridge. Renovation and replacement costs for the structure are similar. Due to the heavy deterioration of the substructure, renovation is not a viable alternative. Replacement has been determined to be the most prudent alternative. The anticipated replacement will be a single-span prestressed concrete arch on stub walls. The replacement will also offer a clear span of 32’ , face-to-face of abutments. The roadway width will be 40’ , face-to-face of guardrail. The project will be undertaken entirely within the existing public right-of-way. Under the revised design, westbound traffic will be detoured to Interstate 70 during construction. The project is located in a rural area, with surrounding land consisting of mowed right-of- way/lawn and cultivated fields/pastures. There are no buildings in proximity to the project. OHPO Online Mapping does not indicate any records in the project area. Beaver Creek is a warmwater habitat with a drainage area of 3.3 square miles at the project location. No trees or wetlands were identified within the project limits. The sediment bars within the channel will be removed in 2013, under a county maintenance project coordinated on the July 2012 MOA.
