A ST George Hospital midwife whohelped a mother overcome post-nataldepression has been named NSWJohnson & Johnson Midwife oftheYear.

Jaclyn Hill-Smith,28, won theprestigious award following severainominations fiom local women.

A testimoniai fiom Carlton mumTamar Alketell, who gave birth to sonOrven in August, helped thejudgesreach their decision.

"My submission described the huth-that Jacyln was simply wonderful,' ' MrsArketell said.

"l developed post-natal depressionand all the safeguards she put in placeput me in touch *i*1 getrnssllors and theright people."

M$ Hill-Smith works at the hospital'sbirth cenne and has been an integral partof its home birth project, which hasassisted seven births.

"I'd love to see the Medicare-fimdedproject extended to otherparts ofSydney and county areas," lr{rs Hill-Smith said.

The young midwife was honoured towin the award. "i'm so where I want tobe," she said. "I find it quite a privilegeto be at births.

"I did my midwifery training here andit's such a supporlive midwiferyhospital."

Midwives across South EasternSydney and Illawarra Area HealthService celebrated InternationalMidwives Day on May 5.
