Welcome to Clarendon Primary Schooland Children’s Centre

Dear Parents and Carers, Choosing the right school for your child is one of the most difficult decisions that you, as parents and carers have to make. We hope that after reading our prospectus, you will have an insight into life at Clarendon and the very caring ethos that we offer.

We are really fortunate to have a very strong Governing Body, supportive parents and families, who all challenge the leadership team with the primary aim of improving our school community. Our Children’s Centre enables us to further support the families within our school and local community.

We have a highly skilled team of teachers, assistants and office staff who are extremely caring and very supportive, to ensure that we meet the needs of your children.

We have a very positive relationship between home and school which can only benefit your children. A thriving Parent’s Association and Parent’s Forum, provide both practical help and suggestions to improve our school.

Our open door policy enables you to really participate in the life of the school and in your child’s education. We look forward to you coming into Clarendon and seeing our wonderful children for yourselves.

The Curriculum

The CurriculumAs parents and carers you play a vital role in the future education of your children. We aim to ensure that you understand what your children will learn in school in terms of knowledge and skills. We offer your children a dynamic curriculum that acknowledges the changing world.

It is essential that children enjoy their learning, make good progress and achieve well. We also want to give them the confidence they need to live a safe, healthy and fulfilling life, and to make a positive contribution to society.

Our curriculum develops the essential skills for learning and life that we, as adults, often take for granted. We will teach your children the skills of reading, writing and mathematics, as well as learning and thinking skills, person and emotional skills and also social skills. We take a holistic approach to education which considers the needs of the whole child.

In the changing world, we believe that ICT is an essential skill and through our creative curriculum your children will be prepared for the world that awaits them when they leave school.

Topic work forms a large part of our curriculum. This supports the children in understanding the real life context of their work in all areas of life. Throughout their journey at Clarendon, the children are actively involved in planning their learning and understanding their next steps.

We are very fortunate to have highly trained teaching assistants to support your children and they are allocated on a needs basis. Both teachers and teaching assistants use a wide range of resources and strategies to expand your child’s understanding of the new concepts being taught.

Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS)Our newly equipped EYFS base and curriculum focuses on the six areas of learning: Personal, Social, Emotional Development; Communication, Language and Literacy Development; Mathematical Development; Knowledge and Understanding of the World; Physical Development and Creative Development. In a very secure, caring and spacious environment, we lay the foundations of successful learning. Our children leave Reception with self confidence, high self-esteem, a sense of independence, with good social skills and a passion for learning. We value the role of structured play to support the children’s learning and development and ensure that they have valuable experiences both inside antd outside the classroom.

Key Stage 1 (KS1)In Year 1 and Year 2, we build upon the good practice in the EYFS in the development of the whole child.

Key Stage 2 (KS2)Key Stage 2 continues from Year 3 to Year 6 and during these years your child will be challenged and motivated to become an independent and lifelong learner. We encourage them to be confident when working independently and collaboratively. We aim to keep the learning fun and stimulating but recognise the importance of strong literacy and numeracy skills.

REWe follow the Surrey Religious Education Scheme of work. RE is taught with a broadly Christian ethos throughout the school. During their stay at Clarendon, children study all main world religions. We endeavour to foster a sense of respect and understanding among our children towards the various world faiths. Assemblies celebrate the faiths of our school community creating an understanding of the festivals and beliefs of our multi faith community.

Sex and Relationship EducationDuring EYFS and KS1, children will begin to look at the life cycle through the science curriculum. In KS2, both Science and PSHEE provide opportunities to further develop your child’s understanding. A more formal programme of sex education is taught in Year 5 and Year 6.

The subject matter is discussed in a sensitive way and parents are notified in advance and invited in to view materials prior to their use in school. You may withdraw your child if you so wish but we request you do this in writing to the Headteacher.

We Care...

Inclusion and Special Educational Needs (SEN)We aim to ensure that each child is able to access the curriculum at their own level. If they are having difficulties, we will work closely with the families to ensure that your child’s needs are met. We are totally committed to providing an inclusive education as well as identifying needs as early as possible, which will enable us to provide the appropriate support. Our SENCo (Special Educational Needs Coordinator) oversees the children who have special needs. Some may receive additional individual or small group support with targets for them to work towards, which are agreed with the children and families. We also seek advice from outside agencies where appropriate. Our team of teaching assistants work very closely alongside the class teachers and SENCo to support your children.

If your child has a disability, parents may wish to refer to the School’s Equal Opportunities Policy, Special Needs Policy, Disability Equality Duty Scheme or Accessibility Plan for further information. Or alternatively, just pop in and speak to us.

Safeguarding Safeguarding is taken very seriously at Clarendon. Not only do we ensure that our children are safe at school but also that they feel safe. All adults who work with your children are CRB checked. We work closely with outside agencies if necessary and ensure that we address the needs of our children with a great deal of care ensuring confidentiality.

Our Community

Parental/Family Involvement We love our parents and carers to be fully involved in the life of the school. Our Parents’ Association and Parents’ Forum are both very active. We encourage parents to join working parties to discuss school development and school policies. We also ask parents to come and support within school with the children and also on school trips. All parents who are involved with our children are CRB checked.

HomeworkWe ask parents to continue to hear their children read throughout their time in Clarendon. We also actively encourage our children to learn their times tables and spellings that are appropriate to their own ability. Our aim for homework is to support the children to become independent learners. We also actively encourage parental involvement with homework, and many tasks given are ‘family’ tasks.

Extended SchoolsAs a school we work very closely with the Spelthorne Confederation of Schools. We all aim to work together to enhance the achievements, and aspirations of our pupils. Through the confederation we provide additional learning opportunities, promote social inclusion, aid collaboration and communication between schools and agencies. Our Out of School Hours programme is extensive. We offer a large range of clubs and aim to get every child involved in both school and community activities. Our clubs range from gardening and sports to music and puzzles. Children are consulted over the clubs they would like and these are run by school staff, external organisations and even the children themselves.

Complaints ProcedureWe actively encourage you to come and discuss any issues which may arise with the class teacher or member of the Senior Leadership Team. We want to be able to quickly resolve any issues which arise to everyone’s satisfaction. However, if a matter is not resolved, Clarendon has a complaints procedure, a copy of which is available from the school office.

Charging PolicyOur charging policy is in line with Surrey County Council. Parents are asked to make a voluntary contribution to cover the cost of educational visits, visitors to the school or workshops. If you have financial difficulties, we encourage you to contact the Headteacher. All requests for support are dealt with in the strictest confidence.

Health and SafetyIn the interest of health and safety, Clarendon operates a no-smoking policy and requests that all visitors refrain from smoking on site. For the safety of our children, we request that no dogs are brought onto site.

Medical NeedsAt Clarendon, we have a large number of staff who are trained in First Aid and Paediatric First Aid. We have recently employed a Welfare Assistant to look after your children if they are unwell. If your child requires medication, parents may request medicines to be administered at school in accordance with the school policy. We update our First Aid training and Epi Pen training on a regular basis. Our aim is to support you and your child whilst they are at school.
