Davies Artist: Adam Long CLASSES FOR EVERYONE Arts education has been the cornerstone of the Decatur Area Arts Council’s programs since it was founded in 1967 - from classes to the PASS program to gallery field trips. This spring, we’ll offer lots of terrific arts education experiences for ages two years and up... Are you’re looking to hone some long lost skills or find a hobby? Searching for cultural or spiritual growth or just plain fun? There are so many ways we benefit from participating in arts activities, expecially children. According to the Americans for the Arts organization, young people who participate in the arts for at least three hours on three days each week through at least one full year are: • 4 times more likely to be recognized for academic achievement. • 4 times more likely to participate in a math and science fair. • 3 times more likely to win an award for school attendance. • 2 times more likely to read for pleasure. • 4 times more likely to perform community service. Whether you’re a beginner or an expert, our classes provide you a perfect creative outlet. They’re also a great place to meet interesting people. Why not join us? You’ll be glad you did. For students who can’t afford the cost to attend a class, schol- arships are available through a gift from the Louise A. Fathauer Memorial Fund. supporting the Arts in Unseen Ways Many Arts Council programs are easy to see. Programs like Arts in Central Park, public art projects, the PASS program, monthly gallery exhibits, and classes. But, these programs are only one of the two major ways we serve the arts in our community. We also have a long history of partnerships with and support for area arts groups.

The lives touched through these partnerships and support are too numerous to measure, but often not so obviously connected to the Arts Council. These art groups include Decatur Municipal Band, Theatre 7, 4H, Barn Colony Artists, and Gallery 510; not to mention local schools and churches. Did you know that no other organization in our community offers services like arts grants, box office services, space for rehearsals, storage, and meetings, along with advice and contacts?

Your support helps DAAC serve the arts throughout our community in ways you may not be aware. Thanks!

Sponsored in part by a grant from the Illinois Arts Council Agency.

YOUNG ARTIsTs sHOWcAsEJanuary 8-30Ring in the new year with a fresh take on art! Young Artists Showcase, presented annually by Gallery 510 Arts Guild, Ltd., features exemplary art by area students in fifth through eighth grade and delivers a freshness unique to children’s creativity. Through a jurying process, more than 100 of the best entries were selected from almost 300 pieces of art. The result is a vibrant display of diverse subject matter and art media. Community spon-

sors, DAAC, Illinois Arts Council Agency, Richland Community College, Dynagraph-ics/Fast Impressions, Brinkoetter & Associ-ates, Alan and Beth Frigy, The Andreas Foundation, ADM, Busey Bank, and Nova Framing proud-ly back this showcase aimed at nurturing and encouraging young artists.

Awards ceremonies on Sunday, January 10 in the Anne Lloyd Gallery will recognize these talented young artists from Macon County and surrounding towns.

REvELATIONsfebruary 4-27Fulfilling a childhood dream of traveling with the circus launched Urbana artist, Glen C. Davies, into a career as a bill-board artist, sign painter, carnival showpainter, sideshow banner artist, profes-sional muralist, exhibition cura-tor and educator. While he pursued advanced stud-ies in painting at Drake University and the Univer-sity of Illinois, it was the unique storytelling tradi-tions learned through his unusual circus and carnival art experi-ences that most influenced the personal “banner subjects” he creates. Davies realized that he could give his personal perspective of life issues a more worldly application by painting them in a meta-phorical or allegorical setting. Often the title of the work refers to a colloquial phrase, proverb or say-ing employed as a clue to help unlock the riddle of the painting. His goal is to suspend time and reveal a “moment of mystery.” Perhaps that moment will open minds to choices and new ways of facing is-sues in life.

Experience: ART field TripsDo your kids and grandkids get enough expo-sure to art? Learn the language of art? Know how to look at and appreciate art? Ask teach-ers you know to consider DAAC’s field trip program for school groups, home school, and other youth groups! Experience: ART is avail-able throughout the school year for preschool through eighth graders to tour the current gallery exhibit and experience a hands-on art workshop related to the exhibit. Special ar-rangements can be made for high school classes.

Thanks to a generous donation from the Young Philanthropists organization, DAAC has schol-arships available for school classes and other youth groups to participate.

If you are a teacher, parent or group leader who would like to explore this opportunity, please contact Sue Powell at 423-3189 or [email protected].

EARTHENMarch 3-29Both Karen Gubitz and Adam Long are inspired by the forms and textures of nature. Both incorporate natural materials into their sculptures. Each, how-ever, treats the beauty of nature in a very different and unique way.

A self-taught fiber artist from the Chicago area, Gubitz explores expres-sive possibilities through combining natural and non-traditional materi-als with loom and hand weaving, twining, plait-ing, coiling, netting, crochet and knitting. Expanding the definition

of modern, abstract sculpture, her work often sits between the two worlds of contemporary fine craft and fine art. Her goal: art that is approachable, liv-able and a source of peaceful pleasure.

A professional sculptor and educator from St. Charles, Missouri, Adam Long says “he just plays with sticks” but his award-winning figural sculp-tures are far more sophisticated than that. Gluing bark to a sculpture on a whim one day created an amazing connection between the humanity of the figure and nature. That man-nature relationship now guides his work which often transforms tree branches into human figures, supported by steel armature and enhanced by a clay-like medium.
