    What does

    classificationmean?

Classification or categorizationis a method of arranging thingsinto classes based on

similarities. In the case ofnutraceutical products the

similarities can be related tomaterial source, benefit, orchemical bond. Or it can be

related to different interests ofdifferent stakeholders.:

    producers, consumers, andscientists.

    Tell moreabout herbalsupplements!

Herbs or herbal supplements are divided into two maincategories: 1) specific herbs, and 2) tonics. Specific herbstarget a specific sympton and usually are taken for brief

periods. Tonics are meant to enhance the health of an organor body system and usually are taken over long term.

Herbal supplements are available in many forms: fresh fromthe plant, capsules, tablets, standardized extracts, teas, infusions and decoctions (= extracted in boiling water),

tinctures (= using alcohol based preparations) and glycerites (=using glycerine based preparations), infused and essential oils, and sprays.

Capsules seem to be the most convenient to consume, butsome ailments require another form such as topical.

What will be theclassification ifbased on medical

    benefits?

Medical benefits referto the kinds of health

problem consumers ofnutraceutical productsare facing. There aremore than 100 commonhealth problems known

publicly. A list is usuallywritten alphabetically

started from Acne andended on Yeast

    What will be theclassification if

    based on chemicalbonds?

Classification based onchemical bonds can be found

only among scientists who aredoing researches in the

    laboratories or teaching inclassrooms concerning

    nutraceutical products. There

we can hear terms such as:Fatty Acids, Lipids, Protein orAmino Acid Based, Phenolic

    Compounds, Carbohydrate andDerivatives, etc

  • 8/11/2019 Classification of Nutraceutical Products

    Who areproducers ofthe products?

    They are individual,

community, andcorporates who areinvolved in food

    productions and foodindustries at local,

national, regional, andglobal level. They work

using traditionaltechnologies as well asmodern technologies.

    Who areconsumers ofthe products?

Consumers consist not only the sickpeople or those who are at nursing

home but also young studentspreparing for exams, joggers, mountain climbers, and others doing

regular physical exercises.Nutraceutical products are consumed

by those people for the sake ofrepairing as well as maintaining theirhealths. Consumers live around theworld: in the rich countries as well

    as the poor countries.

    Who arescientistsfor the

    development

    of theproducts?

Scientists for the development of thenutraceutical products can be (1) researchers at

the laboratories of the food industries, (2) foodscientists, (3) pharmacists, (4) biotechnologydevelopers, (5) medical doctors, and (6)nutritionists.

    What kinds

    of interestthey have?

By putting into 4 broader categoriesthey can :

    1) Assure that nutraceutical productssubstantially are food products;

    2) Identify and map the marketingpotential of each category;

    3) Change easily the products from

    one category to another followingwhich one is giving more interest;

    4) Develop the so called multinational& multi-diversified entreprises infood industry.

    How canNatural

    Personal CareProduct beincluded?

Personal Care Product is supposed to be classified as cosmetic. How can it be included as Nutraceutical Product? The mainreason for its justification seem to be taking the benefits ofhaving broader definition of nutraceutical product as well asthe flexible or pluralistic meanings of health. Any food orparts of food can be claimed as nutraceutical products as faras they can provide health benefits. Health benefits can bemany things including feeling good, feeling beautiful, feeling

attractive, and other feelings affected from the using ofcosmetics. A product such as Aloe vera, Spirulina, or GreenTeas can be claimed as food and providing health benefits.Another reason can be connected to the kind of businessstrategy opened to broader and more promising market.

    Isnt it a

    cosmetic?

    Please tellsomething

    aboutFOSHU!

FOSHU is the abbreviation of Foods forSpecified Health Uses. It was created in 2003by a group of 60 Japanese scientists who didresearches related to Nutraceutical products. At

that year there were 300 kinds of food named asFOSHU. They are classified into 7 groupsclaimed as having specified health uses.

The seven groups :1. Foods that improve gastro-intestinal conditions (Prebiotics,

Probiotics, Luminacoids).2. Foods for those who have high serum cholesterol (Soy protein,

Chitosan, Low-molecular-weight sodium alginate).3. Foods for those who have high blood pressure (Peptides).

    4. Foods for those who have high serum triacyglycerol (Diacylglicerol).5. Foods related to mineral absorption and transport (Casein

phosphopeptide, Calcium citrate malate, Heme, etc).6. Non-cariogenic foods (Manitol, palatinose, and tea polyphenols).7. Foods for those who begin to feel concerned about their blodd sugar

level (Wheat albumin, Globin digest, Guava polyphenols).

    A Powerful Hypothesis

The most interesting thing of FOSHUis the hypothesis from where theconcept was originated. The hypothesiswas formulated as follows: Foods canmodulate various functions in the bodyand thus participate in the maintenanceof a state of health that reduces therisk of lifestyle-related diseases. Thishypothesis has been supported very

much by the up-to-date knowledge inbiosciences including biochemistry andmolecular biology together withsophisticated biotechnologies based on

    these biosciences.

Early 1995, the UK Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, andFood temporarily defined functional foods as foods that havecomponents incorporated to yield specific medical or

physiological benefits, other than purely nutritional effects.

Deeper attention was paid by the Europen body of theInternational Life Science Institute (ILSI Europe), whichaddressed the present status by claiming that we stand today

at the threshold of a new frontier in nutritional science andalso that the concept of food is changing from a past emphasison eating to end of hunger into a current emphasis onpromising uses of foods to reduce the risk of chronic illness.Source : Jean-Richard Neeser and J. Discoveries of More Health Benefits ofFood

Today more than 9,000 phytonutrients have beendocumented, and this is just the tip of the iceberg. These discoveries have changed everything we

thought we knew about foods! Oats, for example, have long been known to lower cholesterol becauseof the dietary fiber they contain. But thats not theonly reason they protect the heart. Scientists now

know that oats contain natural chemicals calledtocotrienols that are 50 percent more powerful thaneven vitamin E in reducing the risk of heart disease.

Apples are another food that will surprise you.Theyve always been thought to be healthy,

mostly because they are so chock-full vitaminsand fiber. But it turns out that its thephytonutrients in apples (found mainly in the skin)that are the powerhouses. In fact, theyre so

strong that one study of 40,000 womenassociated the quercetin and other phytonutrientsin apples with a 13 to 22 percent lower risk ofcardiovascular disease. In addition, the quercetinin apples (and pears) has been found to help

improve lung function, reducing the risk of asthmaand obstructive pulmonary disease.
