The LaGrange College Football Teamstormed into the arena for its inauguralseason and battled its way through 10 con-tests. And though by year’s end the wincolumn registered a cipher, the debut sea-son for the Panthers was a success.

Accompanying the new program was afresh spirit that permeated the campuscommunity on crisp fall Saturdays—anexcitement in the air—as students, alumni, friends and parents mingled together onasphalt campsites, talking and laughingbefore filtering into the stadium to watch

the team play. And the team played with vigor, every

contest a David and Goliath affair. Theyouthful Panthers, composed primarily offreshmen with a sprinkling of sopho-mores, took on veteran squads for themost part. They were overwhelmed onoccasion, but they also showed flashes ofwhat they can become.

At the Homecoming game againstWashington University in St. Louis,LaGrange could have won, scoring 14points in the fourth quarter to pull within

a touchdown before falling 31-21. At the Oct. 21 game against Brevard,

the Panthers perhaps should have won. They led much of the contest before stum-bling late in the game to take a 35-27 loss.

There are additional ways to gauge thesuccess of a first-year squad, outside thewin-loss record. There’s the booming newtradition of tailgating. There’s a renewedschool spirit. There’s noticeable progresson the field of play.

And … there’s always next year.
