KAREN BANKHEAD is “ETTA MAE MUMPHRIES” Actor/Writer Karen Bankhead began her career at a very young age, when she got the idea to write a take-off of Cinderella, entitled “Scouterella”. This scintillating tale debuted in a certain Santa Cruz mountains Girl Scout camp, with Karen in the starring role, of course, and the rest is history. Karen grew up in an Air Force family, and began her acting career on stage in theatres in Arizona, New York and Southern and Northern California. She passed up Stanford University, to attend UCLA, studying psychology, while taking acting classes at night. She soon began playing a variety of roles - some sweet, some not so sweet - for film and television. She played the demented neighbor on “The Parkers,” the wacky receptionist Taylor on the ABC series “New Attitude,” the ultra-nerd Adrienne on “Boston Common,” and feisty line producer Denise Pendergrass on the debut season of “Curb Your Enthusiasm.” Other credits include: “I Am Sam,” “Franklin & Bash,” “Reno 911,” “Girlfriends,” “The Gilmore Girls,” The Jamie Foxx Show,” and numerous other television and film projects. Karen was a member of the Groundlings Sunday Company, and has performed with Second City, and the sketch/improv groups, “Hold the Cream,” and “Foxy, Fine & Funny.” Miss Etta Mae Mumphries is the “altar” ego of Karen, and part of her award winning one- woman show, “The V05 Experience,” which was been performed at the HBO Workspace, Comedy Central Showcase, Los Angeles Women’s Theatre Festival, Ira Aldridge Playwriting Competition, San Francisco Fringe Festival, and was an Official Selection of the 2011 United International Solo Fest in New York City. Better known as “the black Forrest Gump,” Etta Mae Mumphries has charmed and rocked audiences everywhere with her warm and witty words of wisdom, and hysterical recollections of historic celebrity encounters.
