the alGarve PortugalImagine golden swathes of silky soft sand beaches, iconic dramatic rocky outcrops, towering cliffs washed by the wild blue Atlantic and endless green golf course with undulating fairways – these are the immediate images conjured up for Portugal’s Algarve. This marvellous stretch of coastline is smattered with pretty, laid back villages, quaint towns, fishing hamlets and the ever present glorious beaches; add in the essential touches of delicious seafood, char-grilled sardines and the odd drop of Tawny port and the irresistible ingredients of a holiday on the Algarve are born! The Algarve has many beautiful and many popular resorts all along its coast. Some are already well known to us and some others remain like undiscovered gems waiting for their lustre and value to be explored.

Universally loved, the resort of Praia da Rocha (2nd largest on the Algarve) appeals to all ages as the superb sugar soft sand beach is the focal point by day and is dramatically overlooked by the resort town perched on the cliff face as if guarded by an angel! The local town of Portimao is close by too, so the attraction of good leather shops and traditional restaurants is a big draw. The laid back resort of Praia do Vau is almost a continuation of Praia da Rocha, so it’s possible to enjoy a combination of two resorts rolled into one!

Albufeira is equally known and loved by all. The resort’s crowning glory is Fisherman’s Beach, but the lovely old Moorish style architecture in the town means the resort is absolutely full of character and atmosphere. Go a bit upmarket and visit Vilamoura where the marina area is crammed with opulent yachts and pleasure craft or opt for the more down to earth local area of Quarteira on the outskirts. The delightful little local village of Carvoeiro has embraced and nurtured tourism, but still retains a nice local feel.

The resort of Alvor was once an obscure fishing hamlet and indeed, even today many of those traces are still visible with the brilliant throwback to the superb fish and seafood restaurants and narrow cobbled streets add to the natural charm. Another delightfully traditional town is Lagos where architecture, history and the modern day walk hand in hand.

Suitable for absolutely all ages, holidays to the Algarve are absolutely fabulous!

Doubtless a pleasure paradise, Gran Canaria brought fame and fortune to the much loved Canary Islands. Perhaps the original venue for happy holidaymakers in the group, Gran Canaria is certainly the island that has the reputation! Like a colourful continent in miniature, the island has superb scenery, diverse micro-climates and just amazing holiday resorts.

Often called the “Wild Child” of the Canary group, Fuerteventura is the new kid on the block in terms of international tourism. Famous for its absolutely stunning pristine beaches (miles and miles of them!) where footprints are rare and wavelets lap the shore and more beaches still where surfers brave huge breakers, this is an island where the outdoors is all important.

Fuerteventura is delightfully local and unpretentious and is definitely all the more attractive for it! Corralejo is the main resort and original local town with a buzzing commercial heart whilst Caleta de Fuste is the young buck, created to welcome tourism and doing a good job too! Enjoy a Canary Island holiday in Fuerteventura which has lovely local flavour and plenty of interest.

Tenerife is an island with a distinct north “face” and south “face” both in terms of landscape and infrastructure. Home to Spain’s largest volcano (don’t worry, it’s dormant!), great local cities, small fishing towns such as Puerto Santiago, vibrant resorts and beaches that’s stretch like golden elastic, the island is a fabulous playground for the young and young at heart.

The best known resort of Playa de las Americas is wild, wonderful and sometimes wacky, but the resort offers everything your heart desires and sometimes more! Close by, the lovely area of Costa Adeje has a pretty coastline and beaches and many good standard hotels. The one tiny fishing hamlet of Los Cristianos is a bustling resort these days that is prettified by its attractive promenade and open-air pavement cafés.

laNzarote Canary Islands

Lanzarote is one of our very favourite holiday island escapes. The Irish holidaymaker has had a long-standing love affair with this lovely island and these days, it feels like a home from home. Lunar landscape apart, this Canary Island is beloved by many and is a bolthole and refuge from life’s hectic pace. Laid back ambience, warm waters, golden sunshine and wonderful food are just a few of the island’s essential ingredients for brilliant holidays in Lanzarote.

The most outstanding feature of Lanzarote is its fascinating topography, which absolutely resembles the surface of the moon! The National Park at Timanfaya is a

wonderful excursion to see the island as it must have looked at the time of its creation – view the dormant volcano and watch the geysers perform their magical tricks!

The genius behind maintaining Lanzarote’s unique landscape today is local architect and man before his time, César Manrique, who advised and cajoled the authorities to ban building any edifice above the height of a palm tree. His extraordinary vision means that Lanzarote today is quite flat and attractive and has avoided the blight of high structures and skyscrapers. A must see is his own house, which is now a museum.

Lanzarote has many excellent resorts and, as the island is not very large, all benefit from proximity and therefore accessibility to great beaches and general infrastructure. Matagorda and Playa de los Pocillos are nicely laid back, straggly resorts, which share a splendid promenade that runs all the way to Puerto del Carmen. Flanking long stretches of dark sand beach, the promenade is the perfect evening “rambla”. Lots of little shops, bars and cafés line the route, so there are plenty of pleasant distractions along the way. The main resort of Puerto del Carmen needs little introduction and its popularity speaks volumes. The tiny harbour area is really atmospheric as the sun goes down when the local restaurants light their barbecues and the waft of grilled fish fills the balmy air. Sheer heaven! Wander round the town, dip in an out of the tourist shops – there are always shoes and bags to be bought!

Down south in the once fishing village of Playa Blanca, the resort is perfectly informal and casual and is very suitable for relaxing, laid back holidays. Costa Teguise is an attractive town with pristine paved streets, pretty plazas and open-air cafés and bars. Year round holidays to Lanzarote are truly enjoyable and offer the most amazing value for money. A real Canary Island winner!

Corfu Greece

The tourist resort of Kusadasi in Turkey has rightly become a very popular haunt with visitors who want sun, sea and sand, but also enjoy shopping and hot nightlife! Kusadasi is a firm favourite with Irish holidaymakers and the busy Irish bars are testament to that! The beach serving Kusadasi is located just a few klms away at Ladies Beach where stretches of white sand shelve gently to the warm waters of the Aegean.

Kusadasi springs to life after dark and the streets teem with people haggling in the souk or market and lively banter with the locals is part of the fun. Buy some traditional Turkish Delight then stop by a local restaurant for great value food and cool drinks. Take a trip to the archaeological site at Ephesus where the Temple of Artemis was one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.

The Greek island of Corfu is picturesque and very green. The wooded hillsides are carpeted with cypress trees and the turquoise waters of the Aegean glint under the bluest of skies. Corfu is a tiny island and its eastern flank is a tourist playground along the length of the coast.

Corfu Town is beautiful with narrow cobbled streets and a delightful Church. The “Liston” area has a terrace with cricket ground in front! Corfu’s resorts of Messonghi and Moraitika in the south and Kondokali, Gouvia, Dassia and Ipsos in the north all have good beaches and plenty of shops, cafes and tavernas. There are lesser known resorts too which are traditional and typical and where the real Greek experience is alive and well. In Corfu, it is still possible to enjoy the Greece of Granny’s time!
