SHARE THE BEAUTY OF YOUR COMMUNITY WITH A FRESH AIR

CHILD THIS SUMMERCAPITAL DISTRICT - This summer, share the beauty of your community with a Fresh Air child while enjoying the pure joys of summer in your own backyard! Thousands of volun-teer host families in rural, suburban, and small town com-munities across 13 states from Virginia to Maine and Canada open their hearts and homes to New York City children from low-income communities through The Fresh Air Funds Vol-unteer Host Family program. The Fresh Air Fund, an indepen-dent, not-for-profit agency, has provided free summer expe-riences to more than 1.8 million New York City children from low-income communities since 1877. Host families open their homes to children who might not otherwise be able to enjoy a summer away from New York City. Fresh Air children experience simple pleasures like running barefoot through the grass, swimming in a cool lake, and gazing at star-filled skies. Through the eyes of Fresh Air children, families often rediscover the beauty of their own communities. For more information on how you can make summer special for a Fresh Air child, contact Tenniel Hansen at 518-441-4407 or visit The Fresh Air Fund at www.freshair.org.

GET IN THE ZONE(NAPS)You may be better able to win the race for (storage) space with your closet, if you heed a few hints.Although everyones closet storage dilemmas vary, a systematic method of organizing your stuff can lead to the highest level of effi ciency. Besides, when your closet is clutter free, your mornings can run more smoothly, giving you the right mind-set to tackle the day. As you begin to sort through the contents of your closet, remember the 80/20 rule: You wear 20 percent of your clothes 80 percent of the time. The rest just takes up valuable, reachable space. Arrange your collection by category, grouping shirts, pants, suits, dresses and so on. De-pending on the nature of your ward- robe, you can also separate casual clothes from those you wear to work or on special occasions. Add a center tower of shelving on each wall for frequently used items. It creates a place for folded things such as T-shirts, sweaters and denim. Pants, shirts and dresses can be kept on hang rods, making them easier to access. Upper storage shelving (above the highest hanging rod) can be for seasonal clothes you use less often as well as pieces you rarely use at all. Personal and activity items such as your everyday watch, wedding ring, wallet, keys and

phone can stay within arms reach on a waist-level shelf or drawer. Shoes worn most often should be the easiest to reach. Keep special party shoes or rarely used running shoes on the fl oor or way up high. When space in other areas of the home is tight, keep luggage and other items tucked away in your walk-in. These occasional items can be hidden away and pulled out when you need them. Dont underestimate the power of closet accessories. Closet systems, like those from Closet-Maid, can be outfi tted with drawers, doors, cubbies, jewelry trays and pullout rods, putting every last inch of space to work. To learn more, go to www.closetmaid.com.

(NAPS)Theres good news for homeown-ers who want to reduce their energy costs. With a little bit of homework, savings are possible.According to the U.S. Environmental Protec-tion Agency (EPA), most Americans are pay-ing more for electricity and natural gas than they did four years ago, with the average household utility bill now about $1,900 each year. And, according to the Department of Energy (DOE), heating and cooling accounts for about 56 percent of the energy use in a typical U.S. home, making it the largest en-ergy expense for most homes. To reduce these costs, the experts at the Luxaire brand of heating and air condition-ing recommend the following: Adjust your thermostat. By raising your thermostat just a few degrees in mild tem-peratures and lowering it in cooler tempera-tures, you can help your heating and cooling system work less to maintain a comfortable indoor temperature. Programming your thermostat to accommodate your familys

time away from home and sleeping sched-ules will also help to ensure that your system is operating only when you need it. Install a dehumidifier. Humidity can make the air feel hotter and heavier in warm weather. By removing the humidity, the air will feel drier and cooler and you will be able to rely less heavily on your heating and cool-ing system to make the air comfortable. Perform regular maintenance. Clean air fil-ters, seal any duct leaks and make sure the areas around your system are clear of ob-structions. According to the EPA, improper insulation can reduce system efficiency by up to 30 percent. Have your existing home comfort system inspected and serviced by a qualified tech-nician. The technician will make sure your system is working properly and at peak ef-ficiency. A knowledgeable technician will also be able to recommend a new, more ef-ficient replacement system, such as ENERGY STARqualified equipment that can help you save money on energy bills.

TIPS ON SAVING MONEY WITH AN HVAC SYSTEM

DID YOU KNOW? There are thousands of species of ants all over the world. Ants live in many different climates but are notably active and most abundant in warm temperatures. Chances are, at some point during the spring and summer, you will come in contact with ants in your area. Although many ants are black and red, there are a few species of ants that are light brown and even yellowish in color. Pharaoh ants and thief ants are light-colored

ants that are often mistaken for each other. Thief ants build colonies in large numbers close to other ant colonies and then use tun-neling to steal food. Pharaoh ants are also very small and tend to make well-hidden nests, which allow them to infest a property or home quite quickly. Because both of these types of ants can become pests, you may need to hire a professional exterminator if the ants become a nuisance.

TIPS ON SAVING MONEY WITH AN HVAC SYSTEM

HOME TIP If there is a custom tile or specifi c design that you really like that is not within your budget for the entire kitchen or bathroom, think about using it as an accent instead. Rely on less expensive tiles for much of the room, then sprinkle in the accent tiles for the style you want. The fi nished project will look

high-end, but you will likely have stayed within your budget. You also can save mon-ey by shopping at a reuse center or one that sells remnants and leftover materials from larger jobs. For example, its possible to fi nd a piece of marble or granite that would fi t perfectly as a countertop in a bathroom.

9 WAYS TO IMPROVE CURB APPEAL Homeowners who want their homes to make strong fi rst impressions must prioritize curb appeal. Homes with strong curb appeal sell well and can impart a welcoming feel to all visitors. Improving curb appeal need not be expensive, and the following are a hand-ful of ways to improve the appearance of your home.

    1. Install a bold-looking door in a vibrant color or one with a custom design. This helps the home stand out from other properties in the neighborhood.

    2. Edge the driveway to create a distinct border between the driveway and the lawn or other landscaping features. This helps homes appear neat and well kept.

    3. Use outdoor lighting to make a home more inviting. Outdoor lighting also makes properties safer to traverse at night.

    4. Clean a homes exterior to remove mildew or discolorations from the siding, driveway, patio, and other outdoor elements.

    5. Improve landscapes with fresh plants and seasonal color. Homeowners without the time to plant can consider container gar-dens, which dont take much time to assem-ble but still add appeal to a homes exterior.

    6. Prune planting beds and add new mulch to restore color.

    7. Add shutters and accent trim to a homes exterior to improve on the beauty of the house.

    8. Install new fencing or give a fresh coat of paint or stain to an existing fence.

    9. Replace concrete paths with tile or stone walkways to make entryways more impres-sive and inviting.

DID YOU KNOW? More and more homeowners embracing a relatively new way to shower. Walk-in, or walk-behind, showers are doorless struc-tures that are designed to give the shower a more open look. Walk-in showers are often appear larger than more traditional showers, and those that do take up more space do so to prevent water from spraying around the

room. Though walk-in showers do not have doors, they do employ a glass partition to keep water in. Walk-in showers often give a bathroom a more modern look, but their role is more than aesthetic. In fact, many seniors fi nd it is easier to get in and out of a walk-in shower, something that could reduce their risk of falling and suff ering an injury.

THE BASICS OF CLEANING WINDOWS After a long winter of snow and ice, many people are ready for the warmth and sun-shine synonymous with spring. But dirty windows can block that sunshine from fi nd-ing its way into a home. Washing windows can be quite an undertaking, particularly in those homes with many windows on mul-tiple levels. However, there are several time-saving tips available that can cut the work considerably.

    * Save window washing for a cloudy day. Otherwise, the warmth and sunlight may dry the cleaning solution too quickly and you will be left with streaks on your windows.

    * Vacuum windowsills and tracks fi rst to re-move a good deal of dust and debris. This will reduce the amount of dirt you smear onto the windows while cleaning them.

    * Use a combination of a sponge soaked in cleaning solution and a squeegee to get re-ally clean windows. The squeegee helps to

prevent streaks and cut down on the time it takes the windows to dry, all the while help-ing the windows to sparkle.

    * Window screens may be the culprit behind dingy windows. Hose down the screens with water to clean them, using a mild cleaning solution if water is ineff ective.

    * Working with a partner can make the task go much more quickly. One person can clean the exteriors of the windows while the other does the interiors.

    * A mild dishwashing liquid diluted in water can cut through dirt and grime. For stubborn dirt, wash windows with diluted ammonia or vinegar.

    * Use a glass-cleaning tool to clean hard-to-reach windows. A telescoping cleaning tool and pad can make it safer to reach windows that are high up.

DID YOU KNOW? Tis the season for barbe-cues, picnics and outdoor entertaining. As the weather warms, people take to the outdoors in droves, eager to enjoy the sunshine and the pleasant temperatures. Some may argue that grills, with their charcoal and natural gas heating compo-nents sending carbon gases into the air, are bad for the environment. But the dis-posable plastic containers, dishes and cutlery that are staples of outdoor entertain-ing may be more harmful to the environment. In addi-tion to the energy expended and the chemicals used to produce plastic products, disposable items often end up in storm drains, and from those drains they wash into waterways and oceans, where pieces of the plastic are consumed by sh and

other aquatic animals. If the plastic does not injure or kill the sh, it may end up con-taminating the animal, pass-ing on dangerous chemicals if that sh later becomes a food source. Many plastics marked as #1 or #7 can be recycled and made into new items, even fabrics. Even plastic products that cannot be recycled can be reused. Bring picnic and barbecue supplies home to wash and use again. To cut down on excess in land lls, limit use of disposable serviceware. While less convenient, cloth napkins, reusable plates, sil-verware, and cups are better for the environment. Desig-nate a special set of items for outdoor use that can be used again and again.

FULLY INSUREDThere are so many people who are anxious to get knee-deep in home improvement projects. Still others are more than happy to leave the work to a professional and sit back and enjoy the results. Those who choose to hire a contractor can certainly get their ll of home improvement projects by watching lms where homes or renovations are cen-tral to the plot.

    1. Money Pit: No list would be complete without including this movie starring Tom Hanks and Shelley Long, who attempt to renovate a mansion only to be met with di-saster after disaster.

    2. The Notebook: Nicholas Sparks novel turned into this unforgettable, romantic lm is a love story at its core. However, the reno-vation of a Victorian home in the Carolinas is also central to the story and makes for amazing imagery.

    3. Poltergeist: This movie showcases what can go wrong when a home takes on a life of its own as malevolent ghosts take over.

    4. Under the Tuscan Sun: While renovating a home might be considered interesting, doing so in the remote beauty of the Italian countryside makes for a much more visually appealing lm.

    5. House of Sand and Fog: A woman is evicted from her home after it is wrongly repossessed and auctioned. Together with a sheri s deputy the woman begins harassing the new owners of the home in an attempt to get back her residence.

    6. Field of Dreams: Although it is not the house that is getting a makeover, but rather the elds behind this im-pressive farmhouse, viewers can be mesmerized by the magic that ensues afterward.

    6 HOME AND RENOVATION FLICKS

Watering a lawn can do more harm than good if the lawn is not watered correctly. Ex-cessive watering is a waste of water and can cost homeowners money while harming the environment at the same time. Water that is not absorbed by the lawn can result in run-o , which causes nitrogen in the grass, any fertilizer that was applied and chemicals in the water itself to run
